Frequently Asked Questions For Middle School Math

1. My child has qualified for Algebra I as a seventh grader. How do I know if my child is truly ready for such a rigorous course?

Take the time to review your child's score reports, extracurricular activities, motivation, passion for math, maturity and cognitive readiness. Only students who meet the established qualifying criteria should be placed into this program. Beginning Algebra I in 7th grade will place your child in Algebra II as a freshman. Only a small number of children are cognitively ready for such a rigorous mathematics program.

2. My child was not in the Accelerated Math program prior to seventh grade. Will this prevent him/her from being placed in Pre-Algebra or Algebra I?

No, a middle school student's mathematics placement is dependent on qualificiation criteria. Please refer to the middle school mathematics web page to review these qualifications.

3. If my child was not in the Accelerated Mathematics program in middle school, will it prevent him/her from meeting the criteria for the Carroll Medical Academy?

No, however, students must be enrolled in Algebra I as eighth graders to be considered for the Medical Academy. Therefore, a student will need to qualify for Pre-Algebra as a seventh grader to be considered.

4. If my child qualifies for seventh grade mathematics; will he/she be able to take advanced mathematics courses in high school?

All students completing seventh grade mathematics will have the opportunity to take advanced mathematic courses in high school. Please review the CISD mathematics sequence and contact your campus counselor with any questions or concerns.

5. If my child successfully completes Algebra I as a seventh grader or as an eighth grader, will the math scores be figured into his/her final GPA?

No, please refer to current District Policy EIF Local.

6. I am a new student to the district and want to be considered for Algebra I in seventh or eighth grade. What should I do?

Please contact your middle school counselor.

7. My friend’s child attends tutoring services outside of the middle school in order to maintain an A or B status in their current accelerated mathematics class. Is this an expectation for the accelerated program?

No. It is likely that advanced mathematics students will need to take part in after school tutorials with their current mathematics teacher every now and then. If your child requires excessive tutoring services outside of the school (i.e. private tutor), then parents need to review whether the accelerated mathematics course is appropriate for their child.
