Middle School Mathematics Appeal Process Parents of students who did not initially qualify for Pre-Algebra or Algebra I can request a review of their child's mathematics placement. There may be no other subject area for which inappropriate placement can impact a student so significantly. For this reason, the qualifying criteria for placement into the Pre-Algebra and Algebra I is purposefully rigorous. Each criteria was carefully selected to ensure identification of truly gifted math students.
Procedures 1. Using scores from a district matrix, students are placed in seventh grade mathematics, Pre-Algebra or Algebra I. The district matrix is comprised of performance on the achievement assessment (mathematics sections only), an algebraic readiness assessment, TAKS commended performance, the mathematics class average at the end of the fifth six weeks, and all core class averages at the end of the fifth six weeks. 2. During the month of May, the district will convene a reconsideration committee to review data for all students who have submitted the appropriate forms. The committee will be composed of administrators, counselors and teachers. 3. The district review committee will discuss each student's data and make one of two choices:
3. The decision of the review committee is final and students will be placed accordingly. A letter will be sent through mail informing you of your child's mathematics placements. Both forms below must be completed and returned to the Instructional Services Department
