Dragon Moms Cook Up Sweet Award

Mindy Keifer didn't dream so much success would come out of her idea to develop a book.  Keifer, a Carroll  parent and volunteer, inspired a group of women who turned her idea into a hard-bound, 200-page cookbook that celebrates the national success and spirit of the Carroll Dragon football program and community.

The book, entitled  We Believe in Dragons, has seen much success locally, and it also won the 2006 Printing Excellence Award at the Printing Industry of America's Southern Region awards.  The book was developed in the fall of 2005 by committee members Alice Bingaman, Glynda Darnell, Susan Drescher, Marla Hampton, Jami McElroy, BeeBee Ortega, Andrea Parchue, Sandie Sanchez, Sherri Schlabs, Leslie Walker and Maureen Ward.  This commemorative cook book includes more than  250 recipes from Carroll families in addition to Head Football Coach Todd Dodge's "Dragon Recipe for a Championship."

The cost of the book is $30 and more than 1,200 copies have been sold.  Discounts are available for bulk purchases.  A portion of the proceeds are contributed to melanoma research in honor of beloved football coach Charlie Stalcup, who lost his battle with melanoma cancer in 2002.

"What an excellent way to welcome a new neighbor, a business client, or a loved one with an economical gift that truly represents the spirit and success of the Carroll Dragon community," said Dragon mom Megann Agnew.

We Believe in Dragons  is sure to be a Carroll family keepsake for years to come.  Copies are still available and make a perfect holiday gift.  To purchase your own, visit Southlake Sports, REB Photo or Invitations & Celebrations.

Carroll ISD Points To 7,800 Reasons To Stay Off Cell Phones In School Zones

Carroll officials and parents are teaming up to increase awareness about a potential safety concern in school traffic zones. Parents, staff and student drivers are being asked to exercise extreme caution when approaching the pick-up and drop-off areas at all CISD campuses. The district typically reminds drivers to stay alert and observe posted school speed zones, but this year's message goes a step further.  For the safety of all children and staff, CISD is launching an awareness campaign asking drivers to refrain from using their cell phones while in school zones.

Courtesy signs will soon be erected at each CISD campus asking drivers to please refrain from using their cell phones while dropping off and picking up students in the school traffic lines. The new awareness effort came at the request of CISD parents who say they are concerned about the safety of pedestrians exiting and entering parking lots and driveways.

"Cell phones are obviously going to be a part of our everyday lives, but student and staff safety is a top priority for CISD," said Superintendent Dr. David Faltys.  "We aren't calling for an all-out ban or penalty for cell phone use, but we are asking the public to cooperate with this safety initiative. I think most parents and citizens in our community would agree that being on the cell phone while driving creates a distraction that we cannot afford to risk when driving near children."

"We can think of about 7,800 reasons to stay off cell phones while driving in school zones," Faltys added. "We appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation as we all work together to stay alert for pedestrians in and near our schools."

Rally To Support Carroll Elementary Student

Carroll Elementary students and staff will come together on Thursday, October 5 to support a student who suffered a seizure last year. Principal Stacy Wagnon said one of the school's third graders, Rohan Gandhari, had a seizure in class back on October 5, 2005. School officials responded to the emergency and Rohan was transported to Cook Children's Hospital in critical condition. After spending six months at Cook Children's Hospital, Rohan returned home where he remains in a coma. The child receives some educational services at home.

"It has been a very difficult year," said Wagnon. "On this one-year anniversary we would like to acknowledge the impact this has had on our CES family. With permission from his family, we plan to hold a Rally for Rohan Day."

There are two ways Dragon friends and neighbors can be involved with this special day. CES will conduct a random drawing for two child-sized bicycles. Tickets will be sold for $1 each. At the end of the school day, two winners will be selected. Also that day, all students will participate in a Walk-A-thon. The event will take place during the students' Encore period. Students can solicit pledges from family, friends and neighbors. The children will walk/jog or run around Koalaty Park. Donations can be made per lap or as a lump sum.

Wagnon said monies raised will be used toward a much needed sidewalk on the east side of Koalaty Park. School officials plan to name this sidewalk, Rohan Road. School officials will also deposit money into the existing Friends of Carroll Elementary account that was set up last spring at Capital One Bank on Southlake Blvd.

Donnie Bartlett Named Carroll Elementary Assistant Principal

Donnie Bartlett sits with Carroll Elementary Principal
Stacy Wagnon at Monday's School Board meeting.
Trustees approved Bartlett as the new CES assistant
principal by a 7-0 vote.

At the September 25 School Board meeting, Carroll Trustees approved the hiring of Donnie Bartlett as the assistant principal for Carroll Elementary School. Bartlett returns to Carroll ISD following a short stint as a teacher/coach in Bridville ISD where he has also worked to complete an administrative internship position. From 1999 to 2004 he worked at Carroll High School as a physical education teacher, health teacher and varsity/sub-varsity coach.

This is Bartlett's first full-time administrative assignment; he was chosen from among 14 applicants for the CES post. Bartlett will replace Lori Allison who was recently named the K-5 Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator at central office.

Bartlett received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of North Texas in Denton. He is currently enrolled at Dallas Baptist University earning a Masters in Educational Administration. He plans to graduate in the fall of 2006. He and his wife, Heather have three daughters.

At Monday's meeting Trustees also approved the hiring of a new fifth grade teacher at Eubanks Intermediate School. Jennifer McCue was hired to help ease overcrowding at the intermediate campus. McCue received her Masters of Education degree from Western Washington University and most recently served as Dean of Students for Rainier View Elementary School.

Board Approves Cheerleading, Emerald Belle Constitutions

Following months of discussion about cheerleading tryouts, rules and parent grievances, Carroll ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the Carroll Senior High and Carroll High School cheerleading constitutions. The documents outline tryout procedures and expectations for students, as well as effective communication with parents of the students.

Superintendent Dr. David Faltys said the campus administration worked diligently to clarify issues such as the minimum size of the squad, identification of tryout candidates by number, tie procedures, who can be present during the actual tryouts and how ill or injured candidates may tryout. Parents of former cheerleaders and sponsors of the cheerleading program also gave feedback and input on the document. School officials say they hope to eventually combine the CHS cheerleading constitution with the CSHS constitution to ensure a better understanding of procedures and policies. Tryouts are also likely to occur in the spring rather than mid-year as before.

Trustees also approved the constitution for the Emerald Belles program. At the last Board meeting they approved the handbooks for band and athletics.

Carroll Will Respond To TEA Request

Superintendent Dr. David Faltys announced Monday that Carroll ISD will respond to the Texas Education Agency's call for an investigation into testing irregularities by the October 6 deadline.

Local school officials received their second letter from TEA requesting the district look into unusual gains at four CISD campuses and erasure marks at two CISD campuses. The first letter encouraged districts to look into the matter; the second asked more directly for a local investigation.

Carroll schools were among more than 600 that received TEA letters about results on the Spring 2005 administration of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (TAKS). School officials say they have limited information to go by in their review of TEA concerns. The district was "red-flagged" for unusual gains in math at Carroll High School and science at Carroll Senior High School. Eubanks Intermediate was also flagged for unusual gains and multiple marks and erasures on the reading test, while Durham Intermediate was flagged for multiple marks and erasures on the reading test.

Central office administrators have already met with campus principals to review testing procedures. School officials say they have no evidence or signs of problems with the test administration procedures.

"We have very limited information from which to conduct our investigation," said Dr. Jan Morgan, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services. "The district does not have the tests, the response sheets or any real tangible records to conduct an investigation."

She said, however, that the district will comply and respond to TEA's request in writing by October 6. TEA has confirmed that the identification of "testing irregularities" is not necessarily an indication of cheating or testing violations.

"We believe our students gains are just that - gains accomplished because of the hard work of our staff and students," said Dr. Morgan. "However, we do agree to conduct an investigation and look into the matter more closely as TEA requests. Certainly additional information from the state would be helpful."

School officials were initially frustrated for being "red-flagged" by the state based on the testing gains given districts are encouraged and rewarded by the state to achieve such gains. TEA officials originally encouraged districts to simply look into the matter. The state's second letter was stronger mandating a local investigation and written response by the October 6 deadline.

"We're an open book when it comes to this topic," said Dr. Morgan. "We'll do what we can to investigate the matter, and then we'll be happy to share any findings with the state and public."
