Save The Date: Major Mania & Business Expo Mark Wednesday, November 7 on your calendars! Carroll ISD's Guidance and Counseling Department will be teaming up with the Southlake Chamber of Commerce for the 2007 Major Mania/Business Expo. This is the fourth annual Major Mania event, but the first ever to feature a new Career & Business Expo sponsored by the Chamber's Strategic Alliance. This is an outstanding opportunity for parents and students to obtain valuable information that will aid in making all the important decisions about choosing a college major and future career. Major Mania offers keynote speakers, leading university professors and local business representatives who can give students an understanding of real world application. Looking for answers to these questions?
Stayed tuned to the CISD website and online newsletter for more details about this November 7 event! District Cooperates In Ongoing Police Investigation Carroll School officials are cooperating in an investigation involving hidden camera equipment found in the ceiling of Carroll Senior High School. Contractors working on the district's own security/keyless entry system located the camera equipment and notified the Campus Administration immediately. CISD involved the Southlake Department of Public Safety who considers this an active and ongoing investigation. Fingerprints were taken from the area and are being analyzed in a lab in Tarrant County, though they indicated it would take 8-10 weeks to complete that report. Although a video tape was in the machine when it was found, the tape contained no staff or student images. School officials removed the equipment, searched the rest of our building, as well as other CISD facilities. Senior High Campus Administrators discussed the situation with the teachers/sponsors who work in that area of the building and have been working cooperatively with resource officers and DPS investigators throughout the investigation. CISD has been asked specifically by the Southlake police not to release the camera's location in the building at this time. Please know that CISD did not any reason to believe students were in imminent danger and while this is certainly a breach of CISD security, officials are unable to share public details of this situation without compromising the investigation. Even as news spread through media reports, CISD was requested by the Southlake DPS to refrain from sharing specific details that would inhibit the investigation. There is no evidence at this time to indicate this camera equipment was used recently. CISD also has no indication whether it was the result of a bad student prank or an adult, but district officials will continue to monitor the situation carefully, cooperate with the ongoing investigation and communicate any details as the district is able. The Administration appreciates the support and patience shown by parents. The district still considers this an active, ongoing investigation and would never do anything to compromise the police department's efforts. More details will be made public as the investigation continues. Inspections Complete For Two Portable Classrooms Carroll ISD is pleased to announce that inspections are now complete for portable classrooms at the district's intermediate schools. Two portable buildings are housed on the Eubanks Intermediate School campus and one is being utilized at Durham Intermediate School. School officials met with representatives of the local Fire Marshall's office this week in an effort to obtain certificates of occupancy. The district was given the all-clear to allow students and staff to move into the buildings. The portable classrooms were purchased to provide temporary relief from over crowding at the intermediate school grade levels. A portable classroom is also being utilized at Johnson Elementary School. School officials learned during a recent demographic report that growth north of Highway 114 may result in the need for a sixth elementary school. Long-term options for intermediate growth include possible classroom additions at both EIS and DIS. Eubanks students are scheduled to begin classes in their portable building on Monday. Durham students are already occupying their building, but they will participate in a grand opening for their "learning cottages" at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 3. The special ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the official opening, and special guests will be introduced, according to Principal Gary Brake. School Board Cancels October 1 Meeting The Carroll School Board has canceled the regularly scheduled October 1 meeting so they can attend and support the Dragon Classic fundraiser sponsored by the Carroll Athletic Booster Club and the PTSO. Trustees will next meet on Monday, October 15 in the auditorium of Johnson Elementary School, 1301 N. Carroll Avenue. An agenda for this meeting will be posted to the district's website 72 hours in advance. CISD Committee Applications Due Friday Citizens interested in serving on an advisory committee for Carroll ISD are encouraged to fill out an application and return it to the Superintendent’s Office by 4:30 p.m. Friday, September 28. Trustees are seeking participants for an Audit Committee, the Budget & Finance Committee, the School Health Advisory Committee, a new city-school joint committee called S.P.A.R.K.S. (Students & Parents Against Risks to Our Kids in Southlake) and district and campus site-based decision making committees. Applications for committee participation are being sent home with each student in elementary and intermediate schools. Applications are available online for other interested citizens and parents. Simply visit http://www.southlakecarroll.edu and click on “Breaking News” to find the committee application. It can also be found by visiting the Board of Trustees drop down menu on the district’s website. CISD committees are led by Trustees and Administrators, operating in an advisory capacity to the School Board on pertinent school issues. The committees meet periodically throughout the year depending on the nature of committee discussion and business. Applicants for the Audit committee are required to have CPA or accounting experience. Southlake Style Magazine Raises Funds For We Care
On Friday of this week, Southlake Style Magazine, already a Platinum We Care sponsor, will use its promotional night at the Dragon Football game to help raise funds for the district's employee appreciation program. Magazine owners Mike and Nicole Tesoriero are raising advertising sponsorships to wrap Mike’s truck; all proceeds from the sponsorships, as well as on-site donations, will go toward funding We Care projects. Their efforts have already secured $4,000 toward the funding of We Care initiatives. They have set a goal of $5,000 to boost and support We Care. This program continues to thrive thanks to generous sponsors like Southlake Style Magazine! Click here to visit Southlake Style Magazine's website. Carroll ISD’s We Care program is entering its third year, having raised more than $100,000 to fund ongoing employee appreciation initiatives. School officials say they are extremely pleased with not only the support of the local businesses and organizations, but also with the response from recipients, classroom teachers and support staff. Health Officials Share Important Staph Information Reports of staphylococcus infections have been in the news in the past few weeks. CISD health officials want to give parents information to help students stay healthy. Staph infections occur in every school every year, and CISD is no exception. In fact, Carroll High School parents have reported cases of staph being diagnosed and treated at Carroll High School last week. Staphylococcus infections can occur in healthy, non-hospitalized people and usually cause skin infections that resemble pimples, boils, or spider bites. The infected area may appear red, feel hot, be painful, or cause itching. Staphylococcus is found on many surfaces and commonly on our skin. It is spread by contact with contaminated surfaces such as those in a locker room particularly razors, deodorant, towels, bar soap, and athletic equipment, etc. It can be spread by skin to skin contact through minor skin abrasions, or intact skin. A suspicious rash or “spider bite” should be seen by a physician for diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment. Untreated staphylococcus infections can progress to serious systemic infections. Athletes who present with a suspicious rash are checked by the athletic trainer and referred to their physician as needed. All such rashes must be completely covered during games and practices. Staphylococcus infections may be prevented by: Good hand washing Covering all lesions at all times Cleaning all shared equipment and locker rooms with 70% alcohol, Lysol, 10% bleach solution, or other labeled disinfectant. Avoiding sharing personal items such as towels, razors, uniforms, bar soap Washing all athletic clothing with laundry detergent and drying in a hot dryer. The CISD athletic coaches and trainers are diligent in keeping locker rooms and equipment clean, and in teaching prevention to athletes. Their health is CISD's number one concern. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse or one of the CISD athletic trainers. Dragon Classic Slated September 30 & October 1 Dragon Classic is a two-day event raising funds for CISD academics in grades 9-12, and for athletics needs in grades 7-12. Trinity Arts Guild To Meet With Demo Artist The Trinity Arts Guild will meet Monday October 1 at 7 p.m. with Demo Artist Blair Currin. Visitors are welcome; admission is free; refreshments will be served. Currin was smitten at the tender age of 13, and captivated by the many oil paintings adorning the walls of his grandparents' home. Certain of a career as a painter, he attended the Art School of the Southwest in Cloudcroft , New Mexico , where his grandfather, Harold Roney, taught landscape painting. As with any young aspiring artist, unsure of how to launch such a career and urged to get a “REAL” JOB, Blair graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1979 with a degree in Graphic Design. A 26-year painting interruption followed. Hounded by the need to paint, Blair returned to the easel full time to pursuer his boyhood passion. Born in 1956 in Kilgore , Texas , and raised around the world, Blair returned to his native state when his father retired from the U.S. Air Force. Living and traveling in Texas and the Southwest, inspiring land and skyscrapes have never been far away. Although Blair appreciates many interest. “There is no shortage of lessons to be learned from observing all that nature offers. The quest is learning how to capture those offerings on canvas that will be regarded as a worthwhile work of art.” His aim is to find satisfaction in the journey, not just the destination. Blair draws inspiration from studying paintings, working alongside fellow painters and reading art books of all kinds. Over the years, Blair has studied with many different instructors – including Kevin Macpherson, Scott Christensen, Ray Roberts, Martin Grelle, Scott Myers, Dennis Blagg, Bruce Peil – each layering new knowledge to shape his own personal direction. He has participated in many juried competitions and exhibitions, and his award-winning works are in several private collections. He is also a teacher, sharing his enthusiasm as well as his knowledge with his students. Blair lives with his wife, Janelle, near Aledo, Texas, where they enjoy the many fascinating creatures that visit their home, along with the native wildflowers and trees that also gather there.
