Rockenbaugh Named NCLB Blue Ribbon School

The U.S. Department of Education announced today that Rockenbaugh Elementary School has been named one of 26 Texas public schools awarded the esteemed 2006 No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon Schools Award. This award recognizes outstanding public and private schools that are either academically superior in their states or that demonstrate dramatic and consistent gains in student achievement.

Blue Ribbon Schools like Rockenbaugh achieve in the top 10 percent on state tests in reading or English language arts and mathematics. In addition, Blue Ribbon Schools must also meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading or English language arts and mathematics. They must not be identified as a "persistently dangerous" school within the last two years and they must be in compliance with other USDE requirements.

Texas Commissioner of Education Shirley J. Neeley commended the nominees for their unwavering commitment to the students of Texas. The 26 Blue Ribbon campuses will be honored by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and the Department of Education at a ceremony in Washington D.C. on November 9-10.

Twenty-three CISD Students Earn Commended Honor

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named 23 Carroll students as Commended Students in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The CISD students earning this honor are: John Asaff, Suzanne Bay , Kathryn Bennett, Whitney Bosworth, Kelly Boyles, Lindsey Bullen, Elise Cargill, Morgan Crawford, Kristine Fernandez, Michael Hayes, Monica Kelly, Mallory Littlejohn, Charles Martin, Benjamen McGovern, David Meline, Chris Mlinac, Michael Moore, Brian Mullaney, Steven Rapp, Olivia Simmons, Haley Smith, Katherine Smith and Taylor Wallis.

Last week CISD announced its largest group ever of National Merit Semifinalists at thirteen.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2007 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2007 competition by taking the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test.

"Recognition of academically talented students and the key role played by schools in their development is essential to the pursuit of educational excellence in our nation," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "The young people being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and that they will continue to pursue scholastic excellence."

Volleyball Teams Plan PINK OUT Games

The Carroll Volleyball teams are going pink! The female athletes and their coaches have planned a Pink Out game against Keller on October 3rd at Carroll Senior High School. Anyone wearing pink will get in free with the option of donating to the Breast Cancer 3Day, benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Fund.

The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity playing immediately after. Coach Shannan Fears is coordinating the event again this year. Drawings will be held between games and individuals that make a donation will be eligible to win prizes. The opposing team and coaches are cooperating fully and will participate in this charitable effort.

The Lady Dragon volleyball program has dedicated their season to breast cancer awareness and have been wearing pink shoelaces and warming up with pink volleyballs all year long.

October 9 Is Student Holiday

Just a reminder that Monday, October 9 is a student holiday/staff development day for Carroll ISD. Employees will report to work for inservice and training. Students will have a holiday and return for regular class hours on Tuesday.

Counselors Plan Senior Conferences, Parent Seminar

The counselors at CSHS will be meeting with each senior, individually, throughout October. These Senior Conferences provide students with the opportunity to discuss various topics, including college entrance requirements and associated timelines, the college application process, scholarships and how to apply for them, financial aid, admissions testing requirements, TAKS, and THEA testing. Letters will also be mailed home to provide specific dates/times for each senior's conference. These letters will be mailed during the last week of September and the first week of October.

In addition, the Counselors will provide an overview of the college planning information at a Senior Information Seminar on Wednesday, September 27, at 6 p.m. in the CSHS Student Activity Center. This will give all parents an additional opportunity to hear the information that will be presented to seniors during their Senior Conferences.

Booster Club Website Details Athletic Updates

The Carroll Athletic Booster Club's new website now provides up-to-date information about individual Dragon sports. President Jack Luna informed school officials that the Booster Club's site became active last week and includes online apparel sold to support Dragon athletics. The site can be accessed through the CISD website via the "Athletics" link or directly at http://www.carrolldragons.org.

Football Tickets Available Each Week

Football ticket prices were incorrectly reported in last week's edition of School eNews Online. Pre-game ticket sale prices are $6 for adults and $3 for students. All tickets at the gate are $7. Tickets are available weekly from Wednesday until noon Friday at the following locations: Carroll Senior High School, Carroll High School, Carroll Middle School, Dawson Middle School, Johnson Elementary School and Durham Elementary School. Flight Simulation for Everyone is tonight's promotional night sponsor. Don't miss your chance to cheer on the hometown team at Dragon Stadium as they take on the Yellow Jackets from Rockwall. The Carroll School Board will meet on Monday, September 25 in the Auditorium of Johnson Elementary School. The meeting agenda has been posted to the district's website. The meeting will begin with closed session, followed by a 6:30 p.m. open session.

District Requirement Addresses Drug and Alcohol Education

Parents of all new CISD secondary students and all seventh grade students interested in participating in extracurricular activities are required to complete an online drug education course before their child is eligible to participate. Carroll requires the parents of all students in grades 7-12 to complete one Drug and Alcohol Awareness Seminar training during the course of their child's secondary education.

About 4,000 parents already completed the requirement last year. School officials say parents of new students and all seventh graders who wish to participate in extracurricular activities, however, must complete the course this school year. A new online curriculum is now readily available for the convenience of parents. The program can be found at http://www.psaas.org.

Jazz Musicians Earn All-Region Honors

Students from Carroll recently competed in the Region 24 All-Region Jazz Tryouts and had an outstanding showing. The following students made the 1st Jazz Band and will tape for the All-State Jazz Band on October 4th:

AP Boosters To Host National Author

The Carroll AP Boosters are proud to announce entrepreneur, speaker and author Steven J. Anderson at 7 p.m. October 10 in the Student Activity Center of Carroll Senior High School. Mr. Anderson will share the secrets of beating the system in school and getting ahead in life.

Reception Planned For National Merit Semifinalists

A cake and punch reception has been scheduled in honor of the district's 13 National Merit Semifinalists. The reception will be held during the October 16 School Board meeting at Johnson Elementary School . Teachers and staff who have played a role in the education of the 13 honored students are invited to attend the reception, which will occur at about 6:30 p.m. during a meeting break. Representatives from the Instructional Services Department are scheduled to give an academic report including college entrance exam scores and AYP standards.

CSHS To Host College Fair

Carroll Senior High School 's Guidance and Counseling Department will host a College Fair from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18 in the Student Activity Center (SAC). Representatives from more than 100 colleges and universities will be present to visit with students and parents about college applications, coursework and scholarships.

OM Informational Meeting Slated

Parents interested in learning more about Carroll ISD's Odyssey of the Mind program are invited to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 26 at 6 p.m. at Rockenbaugh Elementary School. Odyssey of the Mind is a program that teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun in a competitive environment.

For more than 20 years this unique program has helped teachers and coaches generate excitement in their students. By tapping into creativity, and through encouraging imaginative paths to problem solving, students learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems - great and small - for a lifetime.

Dragon Classic Golf Tournament, Auction Approaches

Don't miss out on the 2006 Dragon Classic!  This annual event takes place October 1-2 at Trophy Club Country Club and benefits academics and athletics at Carroll High and Senior High Schools. Presented by Freeman Toyota, the fun begins with the auction and dinner Sunday, October 1 from 5 to 9 p.m.  The cost is $30.  The golf tournament is Monday, October 2 and is a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.; the cost is $150 per golfer. National Event Focuses On Safety, Healthy Choices

Wednesday, October 4 is National Walk to School Day. This event focuses on safety and healthy choices. The students at Rockenbaugh Elementary School and many schools across the nation will be walking to school with family and friends.

For those students attending RES, who live too far away, a group of parents and staff members are planning to meet at the Wentwood Parking lot (community pool) at 7:40 a.m. and walk to school from there. The physical education teachers are encouraging all students to walk and they are also encouraging staff members (not on duty) to meet at Rockenbaugh, walk to Wentwood and walk back with the children.

The Varsity Dragon Tennis Team expanded its undefeated district reign with a 19-0 victory over Keller Central September 19. The Dragons are now 10-6 on the year and 4-0 in District 5-5A play. The meet results are as follows:

Upcoming CISD Meetings

Carroll ISD School Board - The School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 25. The October meetings will vary slightly from the regular first and third Monday schedule. October School Board meetings are slated for October 16 and October 30.

Budget & Finance Committee - The district's Budget & Finance Committee will next meet on Thursday, October 12 in the Cabinet Room of the Administration Center, 3051 Dove Road. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. The committee is chaired by Board Trustee Danny Gilpin.

District Advisory Committee - Members of the District Advisory Committee will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17 in the library of Dawson Middle School.

Juniors Can Now Register For PSAT Test

All juniors are strongly recommended to take the PSAT test. Many scholarships, including the National Merit Scholarships, are based on PSAT scores.

Registration will be held during lunch in front of the library at Carroll Senior High School from now until Friday, September 29. The cost is $15. Please make checks payable to CSHS.

The PSAT test will be administered at CSHS on Wednesday, October 18.

Public Hearing Set For Financial Accountability System

The Carroll School Board has called a public hearing on October 16, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. for the purpose of reviewing the district's accountability results on the School's Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST). Every school district in Texas is required to prepare an annual financial management report and conduct a public hearing. The hearing will be held in conjunction with the Board's first meeting in October in the Auditorium of Johnson Elementary School, 1301 N. Carroll Avenue in Southlake.

School Board Seeks Board Committee Applicants

Citizens interested in serving on an advisory committee for the Carroll Independent School District are encouraged to fill out an application and return it to the Superintendent's Office by 4:30 p.m. September 29.

Trustees are seeking participants for a new Audit Committee, the Budget & Finance Committee, the School Health Advisory Committee, the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Committee and district and campus site-based decision making committees.

Applications for committee participation are being sent home with each student in elementary and intermediate schools. Applications are available online for other interested citizens and parents. Simply visit http://www.southlakecarroll.edu and click on "Breaking News" to find the committee application. It can also be found by visiting the Board of Trustees drop down menu on the district's website.

CISD committees are led by Trustees and Administrators, operating in an advisory capacity to the School Board on pertinent school issues. The committees meet periodically throughout the year depending on the nature of committee discussion and business.

Trustees say they are looking for about three or four citizens to participate on the new Audit Committee. The applicants for this committee are required to have CPA or accounting experience.

Community News

UEA Hosts Workshop For School Employees

The United Educators Association (UEA) is holding a workshop titled "Ideas for Good Teaching" this Saturday, Sept. 23 at the UEA Member Center.  The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon.  Topics to be covered are classroom management, working with parents, and discipline.

The UEA Member Center is located at 4900 SE Loop 820 Suite 204 in Fort Worth. There is no need to RSVP and the workshop is free of charge and open to all.  The workshop is also SBEC-approved for continuing education credit.

UEA is a silver sponsor of Carroll ISD's We Care employee appreciation program.
