Board Hears Demographic Report Trustees heard a demographic report from Population Survey Analysts at the June 13 School Board meeting. The report identified areas of growth within the District along with population and enrollment trends. The District's most likely growth scenario calls for 8,811 students in 2011 and as many as 10,098 students in 2016. Consultants say much will depend on residential development north of 1709. The demographic report also revealed capacity issues at a number of CISD elementary and intermediate schools in the coming years. School officials have long predicted the need for a sixth elementary by 2010. CISD officials have requested an electronic version of the demographic report for public review on the District's website. That document will be forthcoming. Trustees will spend the summer months reviewing and analyzing the information in the demographic report. In Other Business, The School Board...
Trustees also met for a special meeting June 25 in the CISD Administration Center to approve personnel recommendations, including new Carroll Middle School Assistant Principal Stephanie Mangels. More than 2,500 new and veteran school leaders received in-depth training on every facet of effective board governance, heard keynote addresses from renowned education experts and picked up valuable ideas from District showcases of programs that work and numerous networking opportunities. Hot topics explored during the two-and-a-half-day institute included emergency management, student safety on the Internet, K-16 partnerships, school health initiatives, statistical integrity, prekindergarten programs and clear communication on testing and accountability results. Breakout sessions focused on such topics as environmental and facility-related regulations, employer-sponsored child care, bond proceeds management, public engagement through district planning, superintendent/CEO searches, successful after-school programs, improved mathematics and reading achievement, construction budgets, gang violence and education technology trends. Special training sessions were available for new board members, covering basics in teamwork, budget, governance, school law and district planning and accountability. TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local public school districts. Texas School Board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the State. The Districts they represent serve more than 4.5 million students. Mark your calendars for the 2007 Dragon Classic fundraiser - Sunday, September 30 through Monday, October 1. Hosted by the Carroll Senior High and Carroll High School Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), in partnership with the Carroll Athletic Booster Club, this two-day event offers sponsors the chance to take part in an auction dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday evening, followed by a golf tournament the following day. Sponsorship packages, ranging from $200 to $10,000 ensure recognition at both events. The other portion is used by the Athletic Booster Club to fund athletics needs for students in grades 7-12. Last year's Dragon Classic sent $110,000 directly to the academic, fine arts and athletic programs thanks to the generous support of event sponsors and CISD parents. “The Dragon Classic plays a crucial role in funding our teachers’ needs from year to year. Computers, projectors, saltwater tanks and calculators are just a few of the items our PTSO has been able to provide, impacting positively on the educational process at Carroll High School," said CHS Principal Rick Westfall. "The Dragon Classic continues to be an integral cog in the fundraising machine. Thanks Dragon Classic." Eubanks Fifth Grader Reenact Civil War More than 400 Eubanks Intermediate School fifth graders participated in one large Civil War simulation of Pickett's Charge from the Battle of Gettysburg. The reenactment took place June 5 on the hill in front of the campus. EIS students spent a week rehearsing and studying Civil War history, in order to bring this piece of history to life. There were wounded soldiers, nurses, doctors, war photographers and journalists. Following the reenactment, the students silently gathered to pay reverence to those men and women who died in the Civil War. Students then respectfully shared their experiences, processing through the simulation. A student who played the role of a doctor shared her frustrations of not having enough supplies or people to help her with the wounded. A war photographer said she stopped taking photos and began helping the wounded because she felt that was the right thing to do. And, a severely wounded soldier shared that he felt lonely and scared lying on the battlefield amidst the wounded as he waited for medical help of which he did not receive. One of the nurses said she had to make choices as to who to treat according to the severity of the injury. EIS Social Studies teachers Sue Carvey, Jan Holland and Jennifer McCue coordinated this event. Congratulations to Dana Scott (Carroll Elementary) following the birth of her daughter, Dorothy. She was born June 1 and weighed 4 pounds, 15 ounces and was 17 inches long. And, congratulations to Justin Leonard (Carroll High School) following the birth of his son, Caden James.
