District Receives Loss Prevention Grant

Pictured above is TASB Senior Loss Prevention Consultant Roger Ripley with Child Nutrition employee Patti Fisher.

Carroll ISD has been awarded a loss prevention grant of $2,500 from the Texas Association of School Boards' Risk Management Fund. Grant monies will help implement loss prevention and safety initiatives to reduce the potential for property losses and on-the-job injuries and raise safety awareness. A total number of 206 public school districts and education entities received grants of $550,000 from the Fund this year. Since 1998, the Fund's Loss Prevention Grant Program has distributed 1,381 total grants of more than $3.4 mission to Fund members in the workers' compensation and property/casualty programs.

"The safety and well being of all employees and prevention of losses are crucial issues in the workplace. The Fund is dedicated to partnering with its members to save valuable resources and do everything we can to help educate staff to provide for a healthier work force and create a safer work environment," said Edwin Thompson, director of TASB Loss Prevention Services."We are quite proud that the Fund has been able to award much-needed resources to our members over the years," he said.

The 2008 grants were awarded to 192 school districts, six colleges, four regional education service centers, two appraisal districts and two educational cooperatives. Workers' compensation grants focused on fall prevention, personal lifting devices and personal protective equipment. Facilities security initiatives, driver improvement and vehicle safety were the primary areas receiving grants under the property casualty program area.

"Applicants did a superb job of analyzing their hazardous exposures, loss prevention needs and developing loss prevention initiatives to mitigate their impact on district resources," Thompson said. "The review and evaluation process covered almost two months and was extremely difficult given the wealth of well-justified applications submitted," he said.

"Raising awareness and reducing injuries and losses is a win-win situation and this highly successful program will continue to be an integral part of the Fund's overall focus," Thompson said. "We applaud participating districts and education organizations for their commitment to saving valuable local resources and increasing productivity. Safety in the workplace and loss reduction have been major objectives of the Fund's Loss Prevention Grant Program since its inception. The Fund remains steadfast in its pledge to provide continued support of our members' efforts to achieve their loss prevention and safety goals," he said.

The TASB Risk Management Fund is the largest risk sharing pool for school districts and one of the largest public entity risk pools in the nation. Created in 1974, the Fund provides comprehensive risk management coverage and services in the areas of workers' compensation, property/casualty and unemployment compensation. More than 1,100 school districts, education cooperatives, junior colleges, education service centers and county appraisal districts participate in one or more of the Fund's programs.

TASB is a voluntary nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 4.5 million public school students.

CSHS Teens Earn Girl Scout Gold Awards

Congressman Kenny Marchant pictured with four Carroll Senior High School students who won Girl Scout Gold Awards

On April 26, four Girl Scouts from Southlake received recognition for completing their Gold Awards, the highest award in Girl Scouts.

They were recognized by Congressman Kenny Marchant. Pictured at left are Nicole Gaither, Alexa Polaski, Becca Simpson and Sydney Shrum, all students attending Carroll Senior High School.

These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the Girl Scout Law's commitment to "making the world a better place" through their community service.

For her Gold Award, Nicole Gaither developed a program for the Bob Jones Nature Center called Outdoor Action Kids to provide outdoor volunteer opportunities for students ages 11-14 (grades 6-8). As part of the project, she developed a coordinators' manual, application, training manual and training video.

Sydney Shrum painted and sealed a huge map of the United States at Rockenbaugh Elementary School in for her Gold Award Project. She also provided books that gave state facts and games to play with students using the map for continuing educational purposes.

Alexa Polaski's project was a garden courtyard clean up and redo for the Mimosa Manor Nursing Home in Keller. The project included cleaning up existing beds and creating new ones; re-conditioning and adding benches, planting roughly 400 perennials, annuals and a tree, trimming shrubs and spreading mulch. The project culminated with a garden party for the residents and their families.

For her project, Becca Simpson assisted the 400 Gainesville families that were displaced by the floods in the summer of 2007. She collected and delivered a trailer and SUV full of household items and personal toiletries to the Gainesville Relief Center.

As the highest award a teen Girl Scout can earn, the prestigious Gold Award is the single most demanding award that a Girl Scout strives toward, and it's not unusual for a girl to put in more than 200 hours to fulfill the requirements. Leadership, determination, perseverance and creativity - skills developed through the progressing levels of the Girl Scout program - are necessary to successfully complete the project. The essence of the Gold Award is a personal challenge for a girl to stretch her skills and abilities and step forward as a leader to meet a community need for which she has a passion and a will to create a sustainable change.
