Arockiam, Lacombe Earn Class of 2007 Top Spots

Carroll Senior High School's Class of 2007 will participate in Commencement ceremonies Friday, June 8 at 8 p.m. This year's graduation will take place at Dragon Stadium, 1085 S. Kimball Avenue in Southlake.

The Class of 2007 is led by valedictorian Nicole Arockiam. Nicole lives in Grapevine and will attend Purdue University. She received a $250,000 scholarship and plans to major in aeronautical engineering.

This year's salutatorian is Bethany Lacombe. Bethany lives in Southlake and will attend Texas Christian University. She received a Chancellor’s Scholarship which fully funds her undergraduate education. Bethany has not yet declared a major.

Inclement Weather Plan For Graduation

Although District officials are hoping for beautiful weather as the class of 2007 walks across the stage June 8, an alternate weather plan has been prepared in case of rain on graduation day at Dragon Stadium.

The scheduled time for graduation is Friday, June 8 at 8 p.m. The following is a contingency plan to initiate in the event weather conditions are less than favorable (note - if rain persists, the ceremony will be rescheduled for the subsequent time and date):

  • Saturday, June 9 at 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 9 at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 10 at 8 p.m.

Should the original ceremony be postponed, the revised graduation schedule will be posted to the district website as well as Carroll Senior High School's website.

Junior PTSO Parents To Host Baccalaureate Service

A Baccalaureate service for the Class of 2007 will be held Sunday, June 3 at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 185 S. White's Chapel Boulevard in Southlake. The service begins at 4 p.m.

This is an optional service sponsored by the CHS/CSHS Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) for graduating seniors and their families. Participants must report to the church by 3:30 p.m. dressed in cap and gown attire. A reception will be held immediately following the service.

Odyssey of the Mind Award Winners Announced

CSHS students came home with a third place finish at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition May 23-25

Carroll ISD was represented at the 28th Annual Odyssey of the Mind World Finals held May 23-25 at Michigan State University.

More than 800 teams from across the globe competed for the honor of being recognized as World Champions in creative problem solving.

Congratulations to Carroll Senior High School's team for earning a bronze finish in the I'm Only Thinking Of You! Division III (coached by Kate Bullen), an eighth place finish in the Problem 1 Tag 'em Division III (coached by Sandy Sook) and a 12th place finish in the Problem 3 Around The World in 8 Minutes Division III (coached by Sandy Sook).

Congratulations also to Rockenbaugh Elementary's team for finishing 13th in the Problem 1 Tag 'em Division 1 (coached by Ravi Venugopal).

Carroll Education Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients

CEF hosted a May 30 sponsor reception at Central Market celebrating the organization's 10th anniversary

The Carroll Education Foundation (CEF) presented its 2007 scholarship recipients at the annual senior awards ceremony held at Carroll Senior High School May 23. Since its inception in 1996, CEF has distributed over $500,000 in teacher grants and student scholarships.

CEF is instrumental in providing funding for innovative teaching tools to enhance and enrich the educational learning experience for Carroll ISD's students and teachers. This marks the eighth year of awarding scholarships to Dragon seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to academic achievement as well as community involvement.

Ten students were honored who will each receive a $1,500 scholarship payable to the college or university of their choice. CEF Chairman Kevin Clift said, “These 10 students have continued to excel in the academic arena as well as make significant contributions as volunteers in their community; we’d like to see each student take his or her skills and make them count in the world. Don’t let high school be the highlight of your life, but the launching point in the pursuit of excellence. We wish these students the best in their future endeavors.”

Online Auction Features CISD Vehicles

Public bidding began Wednesday for 56 CISD buses, vans and trucks– all a part of an online auction of surplus used vehicles. The online auction is available at www.renebates.com.

Located in McKinney, René Bates Auctioneers, Inc., specializes in online auctions of municipal and utility company fleet vehicles and equipment. The auction items include a number of 71-passenger school buses, eight vans, two 1990 Dodge Dynasty cars and a 1981 Crown Victoria. Two Ford pickups are also a part of the auction listings. The items have staggered ending times, with bid closings beginning at 10 a.m. on June 12.

The Carroll ISD Board of Trustees will meet Monday, June 4 in the Auditorium of Johnson Elementary School. Open session begins at 6:30 p.m. An agenda will be posted to the district's website Friday afternoon.

Parent, Student Reminder: Verification Of Enrollment Form

Students who will need a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form issued over the summer should request a copy from their current campus office between June 4-8. VOE forms are typically required for students (under the age of 18) who obtain or renew a driver's license or attend a Driver's Education course.

VOE forms that are issued June 4-8 are valid for the entire summer. Those that are issued once school is out are only valid for 30 days from the date of issuance. Carroll Senior High School is the only campus that will issue VOEs after the June 8 deadline.

PSAT Academy Available For Freshmen, Sophomores

TestWise by Betty Harris is pleased to introduce the TestWise PSAT Academy, designed to help ninth and 10th grade students prepare for the PSAT/MNSQT administered in October each year.

This eight-day course will be held at Carroll High School Monday through Thursday from July 23 through August 2. Academy hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This course offers students a total of 24 hours of instruction in critical reading, writing and math - focusing on concepts targeted by the PSAT.

Artists Chosen To Participate In Prestigious Project

Carroll students' artwork will be on exhibit Gallery 414 in Fort Worth

Alejo Benedetti, Courtney Corcoran, Kristine Fernandez and Monica Kelly were all chosen to participate in The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth's Teen Artist Project. Under the guidance of art teacher Eric Horn, these students' work is being featured on exhibition at Gallery 414.

This exhibition features the works of 18 local students in grades 10th through 12th. This year's professional artists included Jin-Ya Huang, Kirsten Macy, Matt Clark and Mark Pease.

The exhibit runs from noon to 5 p.m. weekends through June 24. Gallery 414 is located at 414 Templeton Street in Fort Worth. For more information, call 817-336-6595 or visit www.gallery414.org. A reception for the artists will be held Saturday, June 2 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Dragon Choir Members Earn Recognition

Twenty-four Dragon singers participated in the Texas State Solo and Ensemble contest held May 26. Eleven choir members were awarded gold medals and 12 took home silver medals.

The Madrigal group received a first division rating as did the girls' vocal ensemble. A total of 14 gold medals were awarded at the competition. Ensembles were not eligible for silver medals.

Athletes Recognized At Spring Banquet

The Carroll Athletic Booster Club (CABC) held its Spring Sports Athlete Recognition Banquet May 21. Over 160 athletes from baseball, softball, tennis, golf and track were recognized and celebrated.

Receiving the ‘C’ awards for inspiration, dedication, leadership, attitude and sportsmanship were the following individuals:

In addition, the Dragon Award was presented. This award is given annually to one senior boy and one senior girl who best exemplify the qualities expected of an athlete. These student-athletes participate in at least two sports and were active supporters of all others. This year’s recipients of the Dragon Award were Elizabeth Lerohl and Carlos Reyes.

During the banquet, Athletic Director Ronnie Tipps reminded the attendees that CISD has 2,800 student-athletes competing in over 1,700 events each year. Carroll is home to 18 University Interscholastic League (UIL) sports. This year, 14 of the 18 were District Champions and/or sent individual athletes beyond the district competition level.

Athletic Booster Club President Jack Luna also complimented the students, parents and coaches on their success and thanked the following individuals who helped make the evening special, including five table sponsors: Don & Kathy Rockey, DynaResource, Inc.; Bill & Jeanne Ellermeyer; David & Kathleen Hunter; Bill & Linda Hurt; and the Martin Financial Group.

During the 2006-2007 school year, the Athletic Booster Club donated over $74,000 to CISD's secondary athletic programs.

The names of Ann Callahan, Laura Edwards, Matt Hill, Cathy Kim, Tyler Webster and Stephen Williams, all members of The Pajama Game orchestra, were inadvertently left off the list of participants in last week's Betty Buckley Awards article; Chris Hutchison directed the choral portion of The Pajama Game musical; his name was also inadvertently left out of the article;

John Thane and Sherri Williams were administered the oath of office at the May 21 School Board meeting. Thane serves in Place 6 and Williams in Place 7. These place numbers were incorrect in last week's edition.

Carroll Senior Appointed To Marine Academy

CSHS Senior Ryan Rielly

Carroll senior Ryan Rielly was recently appointed to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. He reports for in-doc, which is military training, July 5.

Ryan is pictured at left during the senior awards assembly held earlier this month at Carroll Senior High School.
