Long-Time Technology Administrator Retiring

Technology Coordinator Janet Corder
Janet Corder, Carroll ISD’s Instructional Technology Coordinator, is retiring after 29 years with the district. Corder began teaching math and reading at Carroll Middle School in 1979, and started her career in education 32 years ago.

With a passion for integrating technology into the classroom, Corder served as a campus technology coordinator for CMS before overseeing instructional technology at the district level. She plays an active role in the Texas Educator Computer Association (TCEA) and will continue to do so after retirement as the 2008-2009 Student Contests Chair.

In addition to her work with Carroll ISD, Corder has co-written and published two books – Successful Solutions for Technology Staff Development and Successful Solutions for Technology Integration as well as found time to lead numerous conferences and workshops across the state and serve as a volunteer for Special Olympics.

“I leave Carroll having made such great friends,” said Corder. “Working as a Dragon has given me the opportunity to be involved in an extraordinary educational system.”

Over the years, Corder has had the opportunity to see her former students become educators. “It’s exciting to see my students want to work with kids,” Corder said. “It’s a joy to watch where they end up – whether it’s in education, technology or other career fields.”

“Janet has served our District in a tremendous capacity,” said Dr. David Faltys, Superintendent of Schools. “She has a passion for the integration of technology in classrooms and leaves behind some big shoes to fill.”

Retirement life will be busy for Corder. She already has plans to do work as a consultant and teach at the university level in addition to her TCEA leadership responsibilities.

Dawson Bands Stacks Up Awards

DMS students show off trophies the bands have earned at recent competitions.

On April 2, the Dawson Middle School Symphonic Band traveled to Hebron High School to compete in the University Interscholastic League's (UIL) Concert and Sightreading competition.

The band performed Advance Guard by Jerry Nowak, Nottingham Castle by Larry Daehn and finished the program with Moscow, 1941 by Brian Balmages. The judges were very complimentary and rewarded the band with an excellent rating. After their stage performance, the band headed over to the band hall and started the sightreading process. Here the students were given a piece of music that they had never seen or performed. The director (Eric Guerrero) had four minutes of general session to talk to the students about the piece. After the four minutes were up, he had three minutes of summary time where he could sing, count, clap, etc. the rhythms. Once that time was completed, the band had to perform the composition. The judges were blown away by how strong the ensemble played and each judge gave the band a superior (I) rating. A couple of the judges said Dawson did the best job of sightreading out of all the 35 non-varsity bands competing.

Two days later, the Dawson Wind Ensemble competed at Wakeland High School for UIL competition. The band performed Proud Heritage by William Latham, Voices of the Sky by Samuel Hazo and Variations on Scarborough Fair by Calvin Custer. Like the Symphonic Band, the Wind Ensemble then went to the band hall and competed in the sightreading portion. The sightreading piece for this ensemble was a Level III (Symphonic Band reads a Level I) so the director (David Stone) had five minutes of general time and three minutes of summary. All six judges (three for the stage performance and three for the sightreading) were very complimentary of the Wind Ensemble and awarded the band the coveted sweepstakes trophy (Superior ratings in both concert and sightreading). This is the sixth year in a row that this award has been given to the Dawson Wind Ensemble!

On April 12, the Wind Ensemble headed to the Springfest Competition at the University of North Texas. The band performed the same numbers that they performed at UIL, but were judged by four different judges. The results however, were still the same! The band received all superior ratings from all four judges! They also gave out five section awards (Outstanding French Horns, Trumpets, Tubas, Percussion and Flutes) and eight individual awards (Elena Penedo - Flute, Hayley Ryskoski - French Horn, Michael Leung - Alto Sax, Shelby Brown - Flute, Neha Jain - Flute, Drew Petty - Euphonium, Nick Foster - Euphonium and Taylor White - Trumpet). The band also finished runner-up in the final competition, beating out 22 other bands.

Next up was the Metrofest Competition April 18 at Argyle High School. The Dawson Symphonic Band performed the same numbers from UIL and this time they received straight ones from the judges. The band really played well and the judges were very complimentary of the difficult program! Before the Symphonic Band competed, the Dawson Concert Band "wowed" the judges with Forward March by Paul Murtha, Anthem and March by Anne McGinty and Phantom Ship by Elliot Del Borgo. This was the very first time that the DMS Concert Band ever competed in a festival. The judges were very impressed and awarded the band with straight ones!

To view a complete list of band students, visit the link below. David Stone and Eric Guerrero direct the Dawson bands.

Durham Intermediate Students Becoming Young Architects

Several sixth graders in Lance Mangham's class at Durham Intermediate School recently completed designs for their new homes on Southlake Street, Dragon Drive and Carroll Court. As part of the overall geometry unit, students played various roles ranging from architect to building inspector and landscape designer to real estate agent.

Students designed their homes with a limited budget using real-life architectural symbols and the common scale of 0.25 inches equals 1 foot. They had to follow building codes and electrical codes while creating a home with flow, open spaces and minimal halls.

Combining the final 22 by 28 inch projects with area and cost calculations and a home flyer to sell their houses, students' final projects were recently on display at DIS Open House.
