Important CISD Safety Alert

Carroll school officials were notified today (April 19) of an individual who has been spotted on multiple occasions near elementary bus stops in the SouthRidge Lakes subdivision. The Southlake Police Department has been contacted about this safety concern.

The individual is described as a white, male in his mid-30s. He drives a white, two-door Ford F150 pickup truck with tinted windows. The witness to this incident obtained a partial license plate number - 6 D T. The rest of the numbers and/or letters on the license plate were apparently obscured.

Anyone with information about this situation should contact Carroll ISD and/or the Southlake Police Department immediately. Be vigilant and aware of any situation involving suspicious vehicles or unauthorized persons watching or conversing with students.

Rest assured that the safety of students is a top priority for Carroll Independent School District. Officials will continue to work with local law enforcement to report suspicious activities that might present safety concerns for children both during school and after hours. This safety alert serves as an important reminder for parents to talk with their children about issues involving personal safety. Below are some tips to assist with this discussion. Emphasize the importance of good decision-making with your child, but please try to do so in a manner and tone that reassures the child rather than causing panic or fear.

School Bus Stop Safety Tips:

  • Talk to your child about the difference between a trusted adult (teacher, police officer) and a stranger;
  • Encourage your child to walk to school or bus stops in groups of two or more friends;
  • Encourage your child to stay on sidewalks when at all possible and use marked crosswalks;
  • Teach your child to avoid shortcuts or deserted areas on the way to and from school;
  • Remind your child to never accept rides or stop off at a friend’s house unless parents give permission;
  • Warn your child not to talk to a stranger, get in their car or accept candy or gifts;
  • Tell your child if a stranger approaches, the child should run in the opposite direction; and
  • Encourage your child to seek help from a trusted adult such as a principal, teacher, bus driver, neighbor or police officer.

Other Safety Tips To Remember:

  • Tell your child not to open the door for a stranger for any reason when parents are not at home;
  • Stress that the child is not to tell someone on the telephone that parents are not home; and
  • Go over standard first aid procedures with your child, including how to dial 911.
The Carroll ISD Communications & Marketing Department plans to request funding in the 2007-2008 school budget for a new communications system that calls the emergency numbers of all 7,800 students with a message from CISD in the event of a safety delay in communications. The system can also be used for sending important, positive CISD news, tracking student attendance and surveying parents, too. This will be yet another way CISD is working to ensure effective and efficient communication with parents and staff.
