Carroll Announces Preliminary TAKS Scores

Carroll school officials have released preliminary reading scores in February’s administration of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The scores reflect an overall 100 percent passing rate at the third grade level and a 99 percent passing rate at the fifth grade level.

In addition, 81 percent of the third grade students attained Commended performance on the reading test and 52 percent of the fifth grade students were Commended.

There were 523 students tested in third grade and 577 tested in fifth grade. School officials say there are a small number of students who did not master the test or were absent on testing day. These students will be given another chance to take the reading TAKS later this spring. Individual student and campus results will be sent to parents in report cards.

Keep in mind that preliminary scores may adjust slightly after the second testing administration and/or accountability reports are released in August.

Students across the district will take TAKS tests in other grade levels and subject areas in April.

Chamber, Schools Team Up For PRIDE

Carroll ISD has teamed up with the Southlake Chamber of Commerce’s Strategic Alliance to develop a mentoring program for middle school students. The P.R.I.D.E. Program (Providing Resources to Insure Dragon Excellence) is designed to build a bridge between the business community and the schools, while at the same time increasing the self awareness and esteem of students by encouraging them to give their best.

“The program provides opportunities for business leaders and community members to interact with Carroll students by supporting, encouraging and assisting the students to identify inner strengths in both social and academic areas of their lives,” said Mary Lehrer, CISD’s Academic Achievement Counselor. “We’re looking for adults who can serve as role models for exemplary character and citizenship.”

Lehrer said developing a positive bond with an adult outside of the family has shown to help students improve relationships with parents, which in turn increases the adolescents’ value of school and grades. This type of interaction also helps decrease absenteeism and substance abuse among adolescents, studies have shown.

To participate, volunteers give of their time and money depending on their level of commitment and availability. Options include four tiers of volunteering: Gold (Financial Mentor); White (Individual Mentor); Black (Adopt-A-Team Business Partner) and Green (Dragon Chat Classroom Mentor). The volunteers will work with students from Carroll Middle School and/or Dawson Middle School.

Members of the Chamber’s Strategic Alliance Committee are helping Lehrer get the program off the ground. Potential mentors must fill out an application, agree to a background check and attend a simple, but required training session. Application packets are available on the district’s website at http://www.southlakecarroll.edu. Simply click on the “Breaking News” link to find the Community Mentor Application.

The mission of the Chamber’s Strategic Alliance Committee is to create goodwill, foster positive relationships and to generate support for local organizations, like Carroll ISD, while creating loyalty to Southlake Chamber members and their businesses. Members of this group include Mark Guilbert of Chick-fil-A, Andrea Becicka of Spine Team Texas; Sandy Boyd of Capital One; Brian Zvonececk of Texas Insurance Exchange; Tommy Pennington of Tommy Pennington Realty Group at Keller Williams and Giovanna Phillips, President of the Southlake Chamber.

Carroll Theatre Announces One Act Performances

Carroll ISD’s Theatre Department proudly presents The Women of Lockerbie. This is the group’s University Interscholastic League (UIL) One Act play. Public performances will be held Monday, March 19 and Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard.

Admission for students and adults is $5 and tickets will be available at the door. All CISD staff members receive complimentary admission.

Show Synopsis:
Madeline is a mother from New Jersey roaming the hills of Lockerbie Scotland, looking for her son’s remains that were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103 seven years earlier. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victims’ families. THE WOMEN OF LOCKERBIE is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are purely fictional. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, it is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate. 2001 winner of the silver medal in the Onassis International Playwriting Competition and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award.
