Register Your Little Dragon For Kindergarten

Carroll ISD elementary schools have scheduled kindergarten registration events in an effort to pre-register the Class of 2021. School officials mailed a postcard to all residential and commercial taxpayers in an effort to communicate kindergarten registration procedures. This postcard features Durham Elementary School kindergarten teacher Tiffany Delbridge. The postcard was sponsored and paid for by CISD corporate partner, Roxann Taylor & Associates Realtors.

Students who turn five years old on or before September 1, 2008 are eligible to register. Some campuses are offering single registration dates and parents can register their kindergarten students anytime on or after that event. Others ask for parents to register their kindergartner during regular business hours and have planned a student orientation for later in the month.

To register your child for kindergarten, you'll need a copy of the child's Social Security number, up-to-date immunization records, birth certificate and two proofs of residency. A driver's license does not constitute proof of residence; rather parents are asked to submit a recent electric AND water bill.

Dates for kindergarten registration are:
• Old Union Elementary - Wednesday, April 9 from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m.
• Durham Elementary - Tuesday, April 22 from 6 to 7 p.m.
• Rockenbaugh Elementary - Thursday, April 24 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
• Carroll Elementary School - Register during regular office hours April 14-24.
• Johnson Elementary School - Register during regular office hours April 14-24.

Cassie Shankman
Project: The Dark Side of Night – Cassie led a group of Carroll High School students to set up a display at Town Hall and communicate the importance of understanding sleep disorders and what can be done about them. Over 55 people were educated about how they can get help for their disorder. Cassie stated, "My goal is to increase awareness of this often overlooked, but potentially dangerous disorder. If I can improve one person's life, then this community service project is a success."
Sponsor: Julie McCurley, Cassie’s Biology Teacher

Shannon Shankman
Project: Sleep Disorder Awareness – Shannon utilized students from Carroll High School to help inform the local community about the impact of sleep disorders. Sixty-five people were informed about the risks and how to get help for sleep disorders. Shannon stated, "Sleep disorders are a growing problem in our society. The earlier the problem can be detected, the healthier the patient."
Sponsor: Julie McCurley, Shannon’s Biology Teacher

Each of the student honorees participated in the Lone Star Leadership Academy, a week-long leadership development program offered each summer by Education in Action. As graduates of this program, they were invited to join Education in Action’s alumni program, the Lone Star Youth Leadership Council, to receive leadership training during the school year to support them as they created and led service projects in their schools/communities. Across the state 56 students, representing 39 school districts, one charter school and one private school, completed service projects as members of the Lone Star Youth Leadership Council during the 2007-2008 school year. Chamber Announces Southlake's Citizen Of The Year

Southlake’s Citizen of the Year was announced at the annual Stars of Southlake awards banquet held February 29 and hosted by the Southlake Chamber of Commerce awarded.

Local resident and community advocate Laura Hill received the honor. Hill’s accomplishments include serving as a City of Southlake Councilman, founding SPARKS (Students and Parents Against Risks to Kids in Southlake), and co-founding the Southlake Angel Society to name a few. In addition, Hill serves on numerous boards and commissions.

Hill, along with her father Wallace Downey, operates Downey Publishing, a Southlake Chamber member business that publishes and distributes phone books to rural parts of Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Hill and Downey founded ART for Education, to give back to these communities, and to date, over $80,000 has been given to schools and students.

Rick Kolster of Peak Performance Development, and a friend of Hill’s, said, “There are many people who donate their time to an effort they believe in.
