Colby Lowe Breaks State Record

Dragon cross country runner Colby Lowe broke the all-time state record for the 3200 (two mile) race by running a 8:50.7 at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Washington D.C.

Colby is a four-year varsity member of the Carroll cross country and track team, under the direction of Coach Robert Ondrasek. Colby will be attending Oklahoma State on a full athletic scholarship next year.

TCEA Appoints Janet Corder As Student Contests Chair

The Texas Computer Education Association recently announced the appointment of Janet Corder, CISD's Instructional Technology Coordinator, as Student Contests Chair of the association.

Corder was appointed by a majority of TCEA Board of Directors and will serve as Student Contests Chair for fiscal year 2008-2009. Her appointment was announced in February and she will assume the duties of Student Contests Chair for one year, beginning April 1.

As Student Contests Chair, Corder will be responsible for overseeing TCEA student contests, which include student technology contests, high school programming contests and robotics contests. She will also serve on the TCEA Board of Directors.

Corder was previously the Vice President Convention for 2008. She was the TCEA Area 11 Director and a member of the TCEA Convention Steering Committee from 2003 to 2006, serving as Presentations Co-chair. She was chosen "Top 20 Best of the Best" as a workshop presenter at the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) for four consecutive years and was also an Intel Master Teacher, Intel Leadership Forum Trainer and MarcoPolo trainer.

The Texas Computer Education Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the integration of technology into curriculum and instruction, and has more than 9,000 members in the state of Texas.

CES Music Teacher Earns Prestigious Award

CES Music Teacher Pam Platt

Score A Goal In The Classroom and the Schola Cantorum of Texas recently honored Carroll Elementary Music Teacher Pam Platt with the prestigious Bayard H. Friedman Hero Award. Pam earned this for being an outstanding elementary music teacher. The awards presentation took place earlier this month at the Schola Concert held at First United Methodist Church in Hurst.

The Bayard H. Friedman Hero Award was established to honor outstanding school employees. Mr. Friedman, a renowned civic leader, was a strong proponent of challenging students and educators to continuously strive to raise the level of education and excellence of those in positions of serving our children and communities.

Pam has been an outstanding music specialist for grades K-4 and a show choir director at Carroll Elementary School since 2006. Over her 31-year career she has nurtured her student’s souls and instilled in them a fundamental love of music.

Pam graduated with a Bachelors of Music Education Degree from Henderson State University and has attended Texas Women’s University for advanced musical training which has enabled her to strengthen her teaching skills, which has been rewarded with numerous outstanding achievement and recognition awards. Pam and her husband, David, who is also a former music Hero Award winner, are tireless community advocates for the fine arts.

Nascar Event Coming To Carroll Senior High

NASCAR drivers are making a pit stop at Carroll Senior High School Wednesday, April 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. This event features an autograph session with NASCAR drivers Kenny Wallace and Brad Coleman along with driving simulators, games, prizes and more. Admission is free.

Register Your Kindergarten Student In April

Students who turn five years old on or before September 1, 2008 are eligible to register for kindergarten in Carroll ISD. Some campuses are offering single registration dates and parents can register their kindergarten students anytime on or after that event. Others ask for parents to register their kindergartner during regular business hours and have planned a student orientation for later in the month.

To register your child for kindergarten, you'll need a copy of the child's Social Security number, up-to-date immunization records, birth certificate and two proofs of residency. A driver's license does not constitute proof of residence; rather parents are asked to submit a recent electric AND water bill.

Dates for kindergarten registration are:
Old Union Elementary - Wednesday, April 9 from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m.
Durham Elementary - Tuesday, April 22 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Rockenbaugh Elementary - Thursday, April 24 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Carroll Elementary School - Register during regular office hours April 14-24.
Johnson Elementary School - Register during regular office hours April 14-24.

Carroll Night At The Ballpark Is Around The Corner

This year's Carroll Night At The Ballpark is Wednesday, April 9. Come watch the Texas Rangers take on the Orioles during this student and employee appreciation event for Dragons of all ages. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

The Texas Rangers are donating a complimentary game ticket to all staff members. Carroll students with perfect attendance through March 1 will receive one complimentary ticket to the game. This event also serves as a District fundraiser. CISD receives $2 back for every advanced ticket purchased by phone, mail or fax.

Carroll Night At The Ballpark includes on-field recognition for selected students and staff along with the National Anthem performed by the CISD varsity choir. For more information, or to download a ticket order form, visit the link below.

Inclement Weather Plan For Graduation

The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2008 is scheduled for Thursday, June 5 at Dragon Stadium

Although District officials are hoping for beautiful weather when the class of 2008 walks across the stage June 5, an alternate weather plan has been prepared in case of rain on graduation day at Dragon Stadium.

The scheduled time for graduation is Thursday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. However, in the event that weather conditions are less than favorable, the graduation ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6.

Should the original ceremony be postponed, the revised graduation schedule will be posted to the District and CSHS websites as well as announced via the District's emergency telephone notification system, Connect-Ed.

District Advisory Meeting Rescheduled

The April 1 meeting of the District Advisory Committee has been canceled. The final meeting of the 2007-2008 school year will take place Tuesday, May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the library of Dawson Middle School, 400 S. Kimball Avenue in Southlake.

DES, CSHS Teachers Win $100 Gift Cards

Congratulations to Rebecca Alexander, a third grade teacher at Durham Elementary School. She's the week 10 winner in the True To The Core drawing. Eubanks To Host Battle Of The Books

Don't miss the final round of Eubanks Intermediate School's Battle of the Books competition Tuesday, April 1 at 9 a.m.

Battle of the Books is a dynamic reading program designed to encourage all sixth grade students to read independently, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension and promote academic excellence. It extends, enhances and enriches the curriculum while promoting literacy beyond the classroom. Students are divided into teams that are student directed. After several weeks of independent reading, group discussion and preparation, the students are ready for battle.

The competition consists of teams competing to correctly answer questions based on the content of the books using a quiz show format. The Carroll Education Foundation supported the Battle of the Books with a grant in 2000 and a continuation grant in both 2002 and 2005 that enabled EIS to update its book selections.

EIS is located at 500 S. Kimball Avenue in Southlake.

The Emerald Belles drill team is hosting its annual youth camp June 23-26 in the gym of Carroll Senior High School. This camp is offered to students entering kindergarten through fifth grade.

Both the Dragon boys' and girls' soccer teams have advanced in playoff competition.

The boys play Arlington tonight (March 28) in an area round play-off game at Pennington field at 8 p.m. The Lady Dragons face L.D. Bell tonight at 6 p.m. at Birdville ISD's stadium.

Spanish Club Members Walk For CF

The Carroll Senior High School Spanish Club participated in the 3rd annual Great Strides Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis (CF). CF is the number one genetic killer of children and young adults in the U.S. Spanish Club members walked in the Grapevine/Keller/Southlake Walk at Bear Creek Park in Keller.

Fundraisers for this event took place at several CISD campuses. Stay tuned for an update on how much money this group raised for Cystic Fibrosis.

Reflection of Excellence Event To Showcase Student Work

Don't miss seeing the work of Carroll ISD students in grades K-8 on display at Carroll ISD's 2008 Reflection of Excellence Art & Music Show. Art exhibits will be on display Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 from noon to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria of Carroll High School, 800 White Chapel Boulevard.

Fifth Annual Dragon Invitational To Benefit Golf Program

CMS Hosting Book Drive

Carroll MIddle School is hosting a used book drive to benefit the campus library. CMS is collecting any type of book - paperback, hardback, adult or children's. Drop off books in the collection box at CMS between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. until Thursday, April 24.

The books will be sold and proceeds will go toward the purchase of a security system to detect books from leaving the library unauthorized. Mark your calendars to attend the used book sale April 25-26. Location and time to be announced in the coming weeks.

Dragon Athletes To Be Honored At Winter Banquet

The Carroll Athletic Booster Club cordially invites is hosting the annual Winter Athletic Banquet Monday, April 14 in the Student Activity Center of Carroll Senior High School. This event will honor student athletes participating in basketball, soccer, swimming, diving and wrestling.

A dinner buffet provided by The Feed Store of Southlake will begin at 6:30 p.m. Open seating for parents and guests will begin at 6 p.m. Special tables will be reserved for all student athletes and coaches. Please respond to Susan Morris by Monday, April 7 to reserve your seat.

Softball Team Raises Money With Pink Out Event

The Lady Dragon softball program held its first annual Pink Out game March 8 to support breast cancer awareness. Despite a rainout from the night before, the Lady Dragons, their fans and the community turned out to enjoy the game. The JV and varsity teams wore pink jerseys with black lettering. There were also many special decorations and food items created in pink fashion. The Northwest Texans also showed their support by wearing black shirts with pink lettering.

All of the proceeds from the game will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Softball coach Mandi Barnett’s Teen Leadership class Carroll High School contributed a $70 donation to the cause. They chose to raise money for breast cancer awareness as their class project. The total amount of money raised was over $400. The softball program would like to thank everyone who participated in this special event.

CHS Art Students To Paint Race For the Cure® Plates

The Art Department at Carroll High School will be painting prize plates April 2 and 8 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® in Tarrant County. These plates will be given to each winning team at the April 26th Race for the Cure.

A design contest was recently held amongst the students. The winner will be announced Monday, March 31. He or she, along with the Carroll High School Art Club will glaze the 25 bisque prize plates that will be presented to the winning teams at the end of the race. All glazes and plates have been donated by Southlake Art Academy. Each plate painter and design winner will personally sign the back of each plate.

Theatre Department's One Act Play Advances In Competition

Congratulations to Carroll Theatre Department's One Act Play cast and crew of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This talented group of students has advanced from the Zone 1 Competition to the District Competition taking place tonight (March 27) at Northwest High School.

With Sympathy

Our sympathy is expressed to Dr. Lowell Strike (Central Administration) and his wife Kimi (Carroll Senior High School) on the death of his mother. Services were held last week in Iowa.

Our sympathy is also expressed to the family of Joyce Schneider (Carroll Middle) for the death of her mother-in-law, who was also the grandmother of Ryan Wilson's (Dawson Middle) wife, Jenny.

Sally Ride Making A Stop In Texas

Don't miss Southern Methodist University's Sally Ride Science Festival Saturday, April 26. This event, exclusively for students, parents and teachers, will include an inspiring talk from astronaut Sally Ride along with a variety of workshops and a street fair filled with booths, hands-on activities, food and music.

The festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at SMU. The cost is $18 per registrant. Dragon Hockey Spring Camp Approaching

Former Texas Tornado Head Coach Tony Curtale will be featured at this year's Dragon Spring Hockey Camp. The camp is from April 22 through the first week in June and curriculum includes 90 minutes of ice training per day and 30 minutes of professional (dry land) training daily.

The camp meets twice per week for six weeks and is offered to the following groups: a) Mite/Squirt; b) Pee Wee/Bantam; c) Minor/Major Midget. The cost is $595 per player and $250 for goalies. Participants must register by April 15.

Explore The Cross Timbers At Bob Jones Nature Center

Explore the Cross Timbers Sunday, April 5 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the newly opened Bob Jones Nature Center, 355 E. Bob Jones Road in Southlake. The Bob Jones Nature Center and the Southlake Historical Society are presenting an afternoon exploring the natural history, geography, cartography, history and music of this unique region.

Step out into the Cross Timbers with Southlake resident Dr. Ray Chancellor, artist, educator, environmentalist and educator, for a short walk on the land. Dr. Chancellor has studied and explored the area contiguous with the Bob Jones Nature Center - which he has dubbed the Southlake Cove Ecosystem. His knowledge of local flora and fauna is not to be missed.

Step in time to early Texas music with Tejas. This musical duo features fiddler Carol Nuckols and guitarist and vocalist I.D. Houston. Tejas specializes in old-time American music as well as Scottish, Irish, country, pop and Western swing.

Step back in time with Dr. Richard Francaviglia , author of The Cast Iron Forest: A Natural History of the Cross Timbers. Dr. Francaviglia is Professor of History and Geography and Director of the Center for Southwestern Studies and the History of Cartography at the University of Texas at Arlington. As a historian and geographer interested in the way the American landscape has changed through time, he will share his knowledge about the transformative role that people have played over several thousand years in the Cross Timbers.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Southlake Library and at the Bob Jones Nature Center the day of the event. Bullying Prevention Program Launching Online Films

Stories of Us invites you to an exclusive online viewing of two uncommonly realistic films about bullying in middle schools – produced with students, for students. Two groups of eighth grade students from distinctly different schools brainstormed the subject, developed the scripts and performed all the young roles in the dramatized films.

The films are at the heart of the Promoting Positive Peer Relationships (P3R): Stories of Us – Bullying prevention program. The project team includes three of America’s leading specialists on bullying and school violence. P3R has the support of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, along with a broad base of leading educators from across the country. Camp On The Move, an Austin-based summer camp, is coming to the DFW Metroplex. This non-profit organization is part of the Austin Community Foundation and supports children's charities of Austin. Camp On The Move is designed for kids ages 7 to 14.
