Durham Fourth Grader Wins WordMasters Challenge Durham Elementary School fourth grader Harrison Koh recently won highest honors in this year's WordMasters Challenge - a national language arts competition entered by over 225,000 students annually. The event, consists of three separate meets held at intervals during the school year. Competing in the difficult Blue Division, Harrison earned a perfect score in the year's second meet - held in February. In the entire country, only 124 fourth graders earned perfect scores. Other DES student who also achieved outstanding results were third graders Cole Benear, Griffin McCombs, Reagan Tichenor and fourth graders Gregory Barlow, Keefe Minahan, James Harvey, Francis McCann and Skye Pekerti. Judy Leddy coached these students for the Challenge. The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting words and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the Challenge analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. The WordMasters Challenge has been administered for the past 20 years by a company based in New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Medals and certificates will be awarded in june to those students who achieve and/or improve the most throughout the course of the year. Congratulations and good luck J.D.! Elementary Science Teachers Learn About Life On The Prairie
Elementary science teachers Ginger Jones and Youlinda Baxter recently facilitated a motivating science workshop entitled Life on the Prairie. Participants took an imaginary walk through the prairie as they learned about native grasses, plants and animals. Teachers identified plant parts as they dissected flowers. Second grade and elementary science lab teachers across CISD collaborated as they shared what is being done on each of their own campuses.
Durham Elementary Science Happenings Durham Elementary School students from preschool to fourth grade have been hard at work exploring the world of science. Details of their studies are below.
DES preschool students are always ready for something new. They have been busy planting bluebonnet seeds for their unit on growing things. Thanks to Keep Southlake Beautiful for providing the seeds. Students are also learning about their own growth by graphing how much they weigh and how tall they are. Each student was given a tiger kite whose tail was cut to be as tall as the student. During their recent studies on travel, the youngsters learned about boat safety. As pictured, they are reminded to always wear life jackets when near water.
DES kindergarten students are learning about pond ecosystems. While studying insects, the students were able to identify the parts of an insect, as well as draw and label and look at insects through a microscope. They are also learning how all animals travel to ponds for drink or food. The students enjoyed listening to Whose Tracks Are These? A Clue Book Of Familiar Forest Animals by Jim Nail. They identified the animals by the clues in the book. In addition, students picked out plaster cast animal tracks made by the animal and they were eager to touch the animal pelts and puppets.
DES first graders are ready for spring as they are enjoying and learning about schoolyard habitats. They have been planting seeds in the vegetable garden and identifying a variety of blooms around their school campus. The first graders can even identify Southlake's tree, The Redbud. In addition, they are learning about the insects they might come across in gardens. The students have worked to make booklets on several different insects commonly found.
Durham second graders have been learning all about gears. They're finding out all sorts of truths about how gears interlock, work together and make life easier. The students have even discovered and worked with belts and gears.
Using books in Science Lab? Why not?! DES third graders have made booklets on the six types of simple machines from the research they've completed. Following that, they started working with levers. Several of these young scientists couldn't believe even the lightest student in the class could not be raised by teacher Debra Heath. How can that be? They've been hard at working learning why.
What a shock learning about electricity has been for DES fourth graders. These students have been searching as they try out new ideas with electricity. They've learned the various things that can be done with a battery, light bulb and wire. These students are also learning that safety comes first when working with electricity.
