Trustees Hear Middle School Plan

The Carroll School Board heard a report outlining recommendations to address objectives related to the middle school instructional program. Although the Board took no immediate action, Trustees are expected to discuss the plan at a future meeting.

Dr. Jan Morgan, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services, gave the presentation as spokesperson for a seven-member Administrative committee that studied the performance of middle school students compared to other students in districts with similar demographics. Dr. Morgan outlined five objectives of the middle school plan, including increasing language arts instructional minutes, evaluating compacted and accelerated mathematics programs, expanding services for gifted and talented students; increasing students’ ability to summarize and draw inferences for expository, as well as narrative reading passes; and addressing the reading comprehension levels of the identifi ed at-risk population. The committee consulted regularly with CISD middle school teachers, concentrating most of their time on researching scheduling options to increase the amount of time local students spend in language arts classes.

The committee is recommending a 10-minute adjustment to the school day for seventh and eighth graders, increasing time spent in daily language arts instruction from 45 to 90 minutes. The group also recommended the addition of a second assistant principal at each middle school, the addition of a language arts coordinator at central offi ce, the addition of a mathematics intervention program similar to the district’s CARE reading program, and the addition of a gifted and talented teacher at each middle school campus. Overall, costs for these recommendations are between $728,500 and $988,500.

At least one Trustee said she would like to have a Board workshop to study the plan, the recommendations and answer parent questions. No workshop date has been set at this time.

Black History Activities Underway At Carroll Campuses

Students across the district are studying library books, historical lessons and music by famous black Americans as part of February's Black History Month. Eubanks Intermediate School is planning an assembly with guest speakers, as well as a school-wide Black History Poetry contest and Essay contest. At Durham Elementary, lessons and announcements will feature the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, Harriet Tubman, Oprah Winfrey and Jackie Robinson, just to name a few.

The Rev. Dr. Jesse Truvillion will be speaking to Carroll Middle School Social Studies classes Monday, February 18. Dr. Truvillion is a retired Presbyterian minister who grew up in the Big Thicket of Deep East Texas. He got to know Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, and later became a Northern organizer for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He helped lead marches in New York and New Jersey and took part in strategy sessions of the Civil Rights movement in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, where Dr. King was assassinated. He delivered the eulogy for Dr. King at the famous Riverside Church in NYC where Dr. King had delivered a speech opposing the Vietnam War one year to the day (4/4/67) before his assassination.

Carroll Senior High School will host a community program for Black American History Month on Thursday, February 21 at 7 p.m. in the CSHS auditorium. The program will include special speakers, as well as student and community performances. A reception will follow the program. The entire community is invited to attend.

For more information about this and other Black History Month activities, contact the individual CISD campuses.
