Filing Begins Monday For Trustee Election

Filing begins Monday for two seats on the Carroll School Board. Potential candidates have until March 12 to request a place on the May ballot. All interested citizens are invited to attend an informational meeting tonight (February 7) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Education Service Center, Region XI.

At Monday evening’s CISD School Board meeting, Trustees called a general election on Saturday, May 12. Voters will decide who will occupy Place 6 and Place 7 on the Board. These positions are currently held by Trustees Rob Glover and Sherri Williams.

Glover has already indicated that he will not seek re-election. After serving more than 10 years as a CISD Trustee, he will be moving to North Carolina as the result of a job promotion. Both the Place 6 and Place 7 seats are for three-year terms.

Interested citizens may file for a place on the ballot during regular business hours Monday through Friday at the CISD Administration Center, 3051 Dove Road in Grapevine. Early voting will take place April 30 through May 8 at any Tarrant County polling place.

The May election is being held jointly with Tarrant County and the City of Southlake. Election day voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at five different polling locations depending on each voter’s residency.
Details about polling locations will be posted on the CISD website at http://www.southlakecarroll.edu. Simply select the “Breaking News” link to access the 2007 Trustee Election page.

Carroll School Cafeteria Earns Commendations

Carroll ISD’s Child Nutrition Services Department has received a number of Commendations as part of a School Meals Initiative (SMI) Review at Carroll Middle School. The SMI on-site visit was conducted in mid-September by the Texas Department of Agriculture. SMI visits occur every five years as part of an ongoing review of meal planning, preparation and delivery. The SMI report commended CISD for “high standards in sanitation and food safety practices,” as well as healthy ala carte options, and menu planning that exceeded expectations.

Child Nutrition Services Director Mary Brunig said CISD was recognized for posting nutrition and educational information in the eating area, training cafeteria staff and serving meals to students in a “clean and colorful” setting.

“Child Nutrition personnel serve students in a friendly way and encourage consumption of reimbursable meals,” the report states. “Menus include food item choices designed to improve the nutritional profile of the menu, such as lower fat snacks, salad dressings and milks.”

Brunig said the district did receive one finding requiring corrective action. The SMI review revealed that the one-week sampling of the middle school menu does not provide sufficient calories to meet secondary standards. She said action will be taken to address the caloric level. Increasing nonfat calories in the middle school menu will correct this problem.

CISD officials say two other campuses are expected to receive onsite cafeteria inspections in February. Carroll Elementary School and Dawson Middle School will both be inspected as part of the state’s Coordinated Review Effort (CRE).

Staff, Students Implement Crisis Plan Procedures

Students and staff at three CISD campuses recently implemented crisis plan procedures. School officials say the campus administrators and staff are to be commended for their handling of three separate emergency situations in recent weeks. At Carroll Middle School, the staff responded to a medical emergency when a substitute teacher collapsed and later died; at Carroll Senior High administrators conducted a soft search following a bomb threat; and at Dawson Middle School students and staff were evacuated when a small fire broke out in the home economics classroom.

Carroll Senior High School was evacuated for about an hour February 1 following a threatening phone call into the school's counseling office. The call came in shortly after 11 a.m. and the building was immediately evacuated. The Southlake Department of Public Safety responded to the scene to assist campus administrators with soft-search procedures. SRO officers were also instrumental as first responders.

Once the indoor workout facility was given the "all-clear," students were moved into that facility and out of the inclement weather so the rest of the campus could be searched. Nothing suspicious was found. DPS officials gave clearance for students/staff to return to the facility by about noon.

On Monday, Dawson Middle School was evacuated shortly after 8 a.m. due to a small fire in a home economics classroom. Students and staff were sent next door to Eubanks Intermediate School until Southlake Department of Public Safety officials gave clearance to return to classes at approximately 9:30 a.m. Students operated on an adjusted morning schedule.

Because this occurred prior to the start of school, a limited number of students were on campus at the time of the fire. Emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes and fans were brought in to eliminate the smell of smoke in the building. The fire was thought to have started when cardboard came into contact with a stove burner. The damage was kept to a minimum, however, due to swift responses from DMS staff. A special thanks goes to Assistant Principal Ryan Wilson who acted quickly to extinguish the flame. Dawson students and staff are to be commended for following campus evacuation plan and procedures.

School Officials Designate Bad Weather Day

Superintendent David Faltys announced Monday that Carroll students and staff will be attending school on Friday, May 4 because of the bad weather day used in January. This means that if the second bad weather is not used, Friday, April 6 will remain a student and staff holiday. School officials collected feedback from campus administrators and members of the District Advisory Committee before deciding to use the May date as a school day. A public announcement was made at the School Board meeting.

Summer Santa 2007 Approaching

Summer Santa 2007, the largest children's charity in the greater Northeast Tarrant County, is proud to announce its 11th annual Toy Drive for needy area children. Coinciding with the week of Valentine's Day, February 12-16, the Toy Drive is a chance for the community to express its affection for those children who so often do without.

This year's participating Carroll schools are: Old Union Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Carroll Elementary and Carroll Senior High. Community members are encouraged to drop new, unwrapped toys (no stuffed animals) in each school's toy box during the third week of February.

All new toys collected in the school toy boxes will go to a dozen area charities this summer. Each school also competes in the fun annual contest to see who can collect the most new toys and win the legendary Summer Santa Toy trophies. The idea is to remind students that other area children need a new toy for the summertime and they can, as Summer Santa's motto says, "help make smiles."
