Carroll ISD, Performance Course Agree To Naming Rights
Contract The Carroll School Board approved its first facility naming rights contract last night, a 10-year deal for $300,000 with Performance Course to name the district’s indoor workout facility. The contract, which passed on a 6-1 vote, makes Performance Course the exclusive sports performance provider in all CISD facilities, but does not require student athletes or coaches to use the company. “We’re extremely excited about the opportunity to partner with Performance Course to bring services to our athletes and revenue to the district’s operating budget,” said Superintendent David Faltys. “I believe we’re the first district in Texas to have a naming rights agreement for an indoor workout facility. Our Trustees were very diligent in reviewing this contract to ensure it would have a positive impact on CISD programs.” School officials say they have been working since 2002 to present a naming rights contract that would be acceptable and just the right “fit” for Carroll ISD. An original Revenue Enhancement citizen’s committee recommended naming rights as just one way to make up for lost tax revenue to the state’s school funding system. In April 2006, the district contracted with Dallas-based Titus Sports Marketing to serve as an external marketing force to secure naming rights for three CISD facilities: Dragon Stadium, the Aquatics Center and the indoor workout facility on the campus of Carroll Senior High School. The district hopes to generate revenue to help offset its $15 million annual Robin Hood payment. Officials are quick to point out, however, that agreements must meet certain criteria to ensure they represent standards acceptable for the Carroll Dragons. “While this is a source of revenue for this district, it isn’t just about the money,” said Julie Thannum, CISD’s Communications & Marketing Director. “This is also about a corporate partnership to offer quality services to our students and to protect the history, tradition and excellence Carroll Dragons have come to know and expect.” As an example, Thannum said, even if a naming rights agreement comes forward for Dragon Stadium it would involve renaming the field so that the title Dragon Stadium remains on the facility. Each contract would be tailor-made to meet district standards. Performance Course’s founder, president and owner, Geno Pierce, has worked with nearly 100 different school districts across Texas. His company is currently affiliated with 15 districts in the North Texas area, including Allen and Highland Park. The company is founded on six guiding principles: Belief, Leadership, Attitude, Consistency, Effort and Desire. Performance Course offers cost-effective training to help athletes enhance their speed, agility, strength, power, flexibility and conditioning. Pierce said he also hopes to offer nutrition and conditioning education to younger students, CISD employees and parents. “The courses are unique to the Carroll ISD and allow for one totally-integrated sports performance training concept,” said Pierce. “They are multi-disciplinary and holistic in nature. They address not only athletic improvement, but the importance of character development, healthy nutrition, goal setting and mental preparation.” Performance Course began its association with Carroll ISD when former Dragon Coach Todd Dodge arrived from Fossil Ridge High School in Keller during the 2000-2001 school year. However, the company has trained student athletes in every CISD sport since then, though not exclusively. School officials say this track record helped make the company a good fit for the naming rights deal. The proposal also exceeded revenue expectations threefold, and included accommodations to name the facility after beloved coach Charlie Stalcup who died in 2004. “Our Booster Club and athletic program have wanted to make this happen to remember Charlie Stalcup for some time,” said Athletic Director Ronnie Tipps. “Charlie was a special person – an inspiration to so many Dragons. We are excited about the opportunity to have him remembered and honored this way.” School officials say a special dedication ceremony involving the Booster Club, athletic coaches, Performance Course and the Stalcup family will be held this spring. “There are a handful of people whose path you cross in a lifetime that will inspire you in a certain way, in which you will never forget,” Pierce said. “I think those who were fortunate enough to know Charlie were given a gift they will never forget. I know I never will.” As part of the contract, Performance Course will be the exclusive provider for speed, agility and conditioning training in CISD facilities. Carroll coaches may use other companies off CISD property if they prefer. The contract gives preferential scheduling to CISD teams and programs and still allows CISD coaches to hold their summer skill camps. “CISD employees have no obligation to promote Performance Course to students and can feel free to endorse their participation in the program of their own choosing,” Thannum said. “Other competitors will also have options for advertising with CISD, but the sports performance provider service will be exclusive to Performance Course at all CISD locations. Naming rights agreements typically bring with them exclusivity of some sort, but Trustees wanted to be sure that our coaches could continue to use other companies off-site if they so choose.” School Board members carefully weighed all aspects of the contract before they finally voted. Trustee Danny Gilpin said he did not support this particular proposal because it included facility rental. School officials said Performance Course has already trained more than 3,000 CISD student athletes and was utilizing the indoor workout facility to provide this service. The agreement is unique to the indoor workout facility, and does not lock the Board into rental agreements in future proposals at Dragon Stadium or the Aquatics Center, said Thannum. CISD’s naming rights contract provides multiple opportunities for Trustees to review and evaluate the effectiveness of the agreement, with options to terminate at the Board’s sole discretion if necessary. The annual revenue will go into the general operating fund that pays salaries, utilities, stipends, gas for buses, classroom supplies, etc. Titus Sports Marketing receives a 20% commission
for bringing CISD the deal, and they have agreed to donate a portion
of that commission back
to the district’s We Care employee appreciation program. In Other Business, The School Board...
