Filing For May Trustee Election Underway Filing began February 12 for two seats on the Carroll School Board. Potential candidates have until March 12 to request a place on the May ballot. Voters will decide who will occupy Place 6 and Place 7 on the Board. These positions are currently held by Trustees Rob Glover and Sherri Williams. Interested citizens may file for a place on the ballot during regular business hours Monday through Friday at the CISD Administration Center, 3051 Dove Road in Grapevine. Early voting will take place April 30 through May 8 at any Tarrant County polling place. At the time of publication, no candidates had filed for Place 6; Incumbent Sherri Williams filed for Place 7. The May election is being held jointly with Tarrant County and the City of Southlake. Election day voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at five different polling locations depending on each voter’s residency. Details about polling locations will be posted on the CISD website at http://www.southlakecarroll.edu. Simply select the “Breaking News” link to access the 2007 Trustee Election page. Carroll Trustees meet Monday, February 19 for a regularly-scheduled meeting. Open session begins at 6:30 p.m. A complete agenda will be posted to the district's website Friday. CISD School Board meetings are held in the auditorium of Johnson Elementary School, 1301 N. Carroll Avenue in Southlake. TAKS testing will be administered in schools across the state next week. Carroll parents are encouraged to help students get a good amount of sleep each night and a hearty breakfast the morning of tests. It's also important to have students to school each morning on time and not rushed. Below is the schedule of next week's testing dates. Tuesday, February 20 February 26: Staff Development, Student Holiday Important calendar reminder: Monday, February 26 is a Carroll ISD student holiday and staff development day for employees. The next school holiday is spring break: March 12-16. All Carroll ISD campuses and offices will be closed that week. Teen Program Emphasizes Making Smart Decisions Aim For Success is presenting its program to Carroll adolescents and parents in the coming weeks. This program is a nationally acclaimed educational organization and the largest provider of sexual abstinence programs in the nation. Aim For Success covers the risks associated with teenage pregnancy, the epidemic of sexually-transmitted diseases, the pain of emotional scars and much more. In addition to student programs, Aim For Success also hosts meetings to educate parents, as well. These meetings include a preview of the student program so adults will see firsthand what the students will be learning. This program also equips parents with the tools and medical information needed to communicate effectively with children. Parents will learn how, when and why to talk to their children about sex. Aim For Success believes parents should be their children's primary sex educators, but also realizes that many parents don't know how to approach this critical subject. Cheer On Dragon Basketball Team The Dragon Boys' basketball team is scheduled to play the Grapevine Mustangs Friday, February 16 at Coppell High School. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Don't Miss Annual Life Skills Prom This marks the fourth year for the Carroll Senior High School Life Skills' dinner and dance. This event takes place Saturday, February 17 from 7 to 11 p.m. in the CSHS Student Activity Center, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard. Tickets are $20 each; proceeds benefit special needs students and their families. Mardi Gras Ball: 4th Annual Life Skills Prom Carroll High School Raising Money For Ugandan Children Carroll High School students are on a mission to raise money for students across the globe. They are doing so with the help of Invisible Children, a nonprofit organization that provides protection, education and necessities (such as clean water) to the war torn country of Uganda. CHS students have recently partnered with Invisible Children to participate in a program called Schools for Schools. Through this initiative, American schools adopt Ugandan schools and raise money to help with their education, water and necessities. CHS students have formed the Invisible Children United Club and adopted Pabbo Secondary School. Carroll students are raising money, and competing against other schools in the metroplex for a chance to make a trip to Uganda to experience the children's lives first hand. The Invisible Children team, which is based in California, is making a stop in Southlake as part of a world tour. The team will be at Carroll Senior High School (note: location) Thursday, February 22 at 6 p.m. to host an assembly in the gym. Invisible Children team members will be visiting CHS throughout the school day, as well, to talk to students during class and lunch periods. As part of CHS' fundraiser, students are selling T-shirts. The entire community is encouraged to attend the evening event and participate in helping Ugandan children in need. In addition to selling shirts, the CHS group is hosting coin drives, bake sales and a fashion show/concert in order to raise money this semester. Emerald Belles Preparing For Competition The Emerald Belles are hosting a dress rehearsal in preparation for the drill team's upcoming competition. The rehearsal takes place Thursday, February 15 at 6 p.m. in the Carroll Senior High School gym, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard. The team will be performing its contest routines and would enjoy practicing in front of a large crowd. The Emerald Belles compete Saturday, February 17 at Fossil Ridge High School. Carroll Students Take Bronze At Academic Meet Even without a full group, the Dragon UIL Academic team pulled out a third place sweepstakes in the Ryan UIL Invitational Meet. The social studies team placed second and Jason Bickerstaff placed fifth. The Literary Criticism team won first place. Carroll's Computer Science Team placed first - members included: Steven Rapp, Ashwin Venkataraman and Sumant Manne. Individual honors went to Steven Rapp and Ashwin Venkataraman for third place. Rapp also took fourth place in the Computer Applications category - a first in recent history for the Dragons. In addition, Mureji Futunde won first place overall and Christie Nicodem won fourth. Kelly Hanson won second in Ready Writing, Will Perkins placed fifth in Spelling and the science team placed second. Individual honors went to Lynn Mercer (fourth); Nicole Arockiam (sixth); Sumant Manne (seventh); and Nagendra Polka (eighth). The next competition will be UIL District - March 23-24 at Northwest High School. Dragon Choir Members In Harmony At Competition Dragon choir members recently competed in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Hebron High School. These talented students proved to be very strong - earning 56 first division medals. And, 48 of the 56 qualified for the Texas State Solo and Ensemble contest in Austin this May. In addition to wonderful performances, the students did a superior job of representing Carroll with their professionalism. The following is a list of results: Solo 1st divisions: First division ensembles included: More Than 200 Band Members Earn First Division Medals Dragon band members competed in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest February 3. The event was held at Frisco High School. Despite the fact that the Dragons were new to Region 24 and had a much earlier contest, these students managed to rise to the occasion. There were 106 first division medals awarded to soloists, and 55 of them qualified to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, which will be held Saturday, May 26. In addition, 115 1st division ensemble medals were handed out to the members of the 26 ensembles that will advance to the state contest. Many of these students were just recently involved in the musical Pajama Game and six of these students are also preparing for the All State Band and Jazz Band auditions and concerts scheduled in the coming days in San Antonio. Six student athletes will represent Carroll as they compete in the state tournament this weekend held at Arlington Martin. In Regionals, Robert Prigmore led the way by placing second. His only loss this season came to the returning state champ from Coppell High School. Steven McPeek placed fourth, which earned him a trip to State, as well. Jordan West placed third and looks to do even better at state. Congratulations and good luck Dragon wrestlers! Brock Gray coaches the team. More than 100 Dawson Middle School band students recently
participated in the annual DMS Solo competition. Students worked on
perfecting
a solo, some at a high school level,
and played their work along with a piano accompanist for a local judge.
Performing as a soloist in front of a judge is always
a difficult
task, but out of the 112 students who performed, 105 received superior
ratings. Six students received a score of two (excellent) and one student
received a three (good). Each of the five judges were asked to select
an outstanding seventh and eighth grader from his or her room. The competition
was so close, the judges ended up choosing 26 outstanding soloists. They

February 10 at the Garland Owl Junior Classic Speech
Tournament at Garland High School. The DMS team won a Sweepstakes award
and the following students were commended for their efforts: DES Preschool Students Gear Up For Learning Durham Elementary preschoolers have been learning about a variety of topics. These youngsters have been busy working with gears, finding volume, learning how wool is made into clothing, which animals live in forests and they've even taken on their own community service projects. Congratulations to Tony Clark (Carroll High School) on the birth of baby boy, Evan Anthony. Evan was born February 8 weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long. Book Drive, Exhibits Celebrate Black History Month The Black History Cultural Enrichment Committee (BHCEC) is the primary sponsor of a community-wide book drive and local library exhibits - partnering annually with the Southlake Public Library to facilitate. This year, Jack & Jill of America, Inc. and the Bob Jones Nature Center collaborated with the BHCEC and Southlake Library to showcase black history items such as artifacts, books, photos and much more at several area libraries, including: Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine and Keller. The public is invited to honor and celebrate Black History Month by visiting the Southlake Public Library to donate new books written by African American authors. This is in an effort to increase the diversity of local library book collections. was born
in Alabama
and grew up
in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. She has been painting since
childhood, when she studied under her uncle, John Clay Parker, a prominent
New Orleans portrait artist. She has since studied under many instructors,
including Ray Froman of Dallas, Nathan House of Mississippi, Bob Tommy
of Dallas, Foster Caddell, a well known Connecticut artist, and many
others. Southlake Lacrosse Teams Score Big Wins The Southlake Dragon DI lacrosse team opened the season with two hard-fought victories in Austin last weekend. The Dragons defeated Austin High School 9-7. The play of the game came when goalie senior Craig Evans carried the ball the length of the field for an unassisted score. Evans also registered 10 saves. Sophomore Conner Lehane blazed in five goals plus an assist. Junior Ben Nelson and Sophomore Basil Kostaras added to the scoring mix. Sunday’s 5-4 victory over Austin Westlake highlighted junior Bob Maganzini and Nelson scoring two goals each with senior Greg Lehane adding one. Goalie Matt Wagner was outstanding between the pipes with 11 saves. The defensive unit of seniors David Medanich, Sam Stevenson, Tom Fleps and Stefan Knipp showed speed and physical play constantly frustrating the attacking units. “It was a great way to start the season,” said Head Coach David Smith. “We still have a lot of work to do.” The DI Dragons' next game is Saturday, February 17 at 2 p.m. against Austin Westwood at old Dragon Stadium.
Sophomore goalie Polly Cooney saved 12 shots while the Dragon defensive powers stifled the Scots. Freshman Tully Moorehead led the scoring drives with four goals followed by senior Kelsey Lawler with three, and juniors Jena Collier- one, Ashley Lorenz- one, Erica Spencer- one and Maddie Rogers with two. The Lady Dragons host a non-regulation round robin with Coppell and Trinity at old Dragon Stadium Saturday, February 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The next Lady Dragon regulation game is Tuesday, February 20 against Coppell at old Dragon Stadium. The DII Varsity Boys' lacrosse team earned the championship at the inaugural STX Texas Lacrosse Shootout last weekend in Round Rock. The team took the trophy with a double overtime win against Houston's Memorial. Sophomore Trent Luchsinger was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
