Reminder: Inclement Weather Procedures

With winter months ahead, the following is a reminder regarding Carroll ISD's inclement weather procedures. For more information, visit www.southlakecarroll.edu/weather.htm.

Weather-related school closings and delays will be communicated to employees and parents via the district's emergency telephone notification system - Connect-ED. Decisions will be made prior to 6 a.m. The Connect-Ed system can call the emergency contact numbers (up to six for each student) simultaneously. The caller identification will show the school number as 817-949-5190.

To update your emergency contact information, please call 817-949-5190 and leave CISD officials a message that includes your name, your child's name, and your up-to-date contact information.

Official announcements during inclement weather will still be made on WBAP News Talk 820 AM and on KXAS - TV Channel 5, KDFW Fox 4 News and WFAA Channel 8. When the situation permits, the district will also post closings to the district's website and on CISD Cable TV 30 (Charter) and 33 (Verizon FiOS) in Southlake. However, weather conditions often prevent school officials from relying on these communication methods.

Parents and employees should use messages from the Connect-ED telephone notification system as the primary means for learning about weather-related closures and delays. The public can still turn to radio and television reports as a back-up or alternative way to confirm notification. Sometimes, CISD opens on a delayed schedule due to bad weather. However, school is rarely dismissed early for bad weather conditions because of working parents and the safety concern with sending children home without adult supervision. CISD will make every attempt to broadly communicate weather-related decisions using the Connect-ED emergency telephone notification system and Dallas-Fort Worth media.

Questions about our procedures may be directed to the Communications & Marketing Office at 817-949-7080.

Texas Monthly Releases List Of "Best Public Schools"

The National Center For Educational Accountability (NCEA - formerly Just For The Kids) has released its fourth annual "The Best Public Schools" list to Texas Monthly magazine. The Austin-based research group included all 11 Carroll campuses in their findings of high-performing schools.

NCEA analyzes how students fare in the subject areas of reading, writing, math, science and social studies; the research group also takes into account the demographic makeup of each student body. The list assigns each high-performing campus to one of three categories: elementary schools, middle schools or high schools. A total of 859 Texas schools made this list in at least one category.

For a complete list of NCEA's "The Best Public Schools" list, visit www.just4kids.org. The December 2007 issue of Texas Monthly is currently on newsstands. To read the article online, visit www.texasmonthly.com/schools.

Holiday season is in high gear, so don't forget to use your Foodie Card when shopping at Central Market in Southlake.

Earlier this year, Central Market teamed up with Carroll families to support the local school budget. Through the company’s popular Fundraising Foodie program, Dragon supporters are now able to shop at Central Market and also benefit CISD. Simply present your Foodie Card at the check out and Central
Market will donate 5% of the total purchase back to the District.

The monies raised will be equally divided among each of the 11 Carroll schools. All Central Market departments participate in this program, including catering, gift baskets, cooking school, floral, produce, meat market, seafood, specialty foods, healthy living, cheese/deli, bakery, coffee bar, gelato and the Chef’s Case. Busy Band Students Survive Hectic Schedule, Competitive Auditions

The Dragon Band competed in the All Region Band competition over the weekend in a quest to make the All State Band. Thirty-five of these students made the All Region Bands and five students were listed as alternates. Eleven Dragons finished high enough in their sections to advance to the Area Band Tryouts in Abilene on January 5.

Several of these students were also just named to the All Region Orchestra which performs next weekend at RL Turner High School. In addition to these competitions, several Dragon band members are also involved with the production of The Phantom Of The Opera. Congratulations Dragon musicians!

The Dragons competed December 4 at home against the Plano Wildcats.

This was the first time the Lady Dragons have ever beaten Plano Senior High in a dual meet. The girls' swim/dive team defeated Plano 158-154. The Dragon divers contributed a 20-point swing to overcome the Wildcats - finishing 1-2-3-4 to beat Plano 23-3 in diving.

Diving scores are part of the total team score, and the Dragon divers were the most significant difference in this outcome. The Lady Dragons won five of eight individual events, but it was depth that helped the team win, as the Dragons did not win any of their three relays.

The boys' swim team won five of eight individual events, but the depth of the strong Plano boys' team was evident, and resulted in a 195-110 defeat for the Dragons. The group will get another crack at them at the regional meet February 8-9 at Loos Pool in Dallas.

Individual winners for the Dragons included the following athletes:

Caitlin Baran 200 IM 2:10.6 and 100 breast 1:07.7
Leah Cowperthwaite 200 free 1:55.0
Claire Singley 500 free 5:05.6
Taylor Hryorchuk diving 263 pts
Wil Singley 100 free 49.2 and 500 free 4:48.1
Drew Mays 200 free 1:46.91
Connor Nolan 200 IM 1:58.2 PR
Connor Bowles diving 208 pts

The Dragons are in action next at the Grapevine Non-Tisca JV Invitational at Grapevine Friday, December 7 at 1:30 p.m. The next varsity meet is at the Carroll Aquatic Center Tuesday, December 11 against Grapevine and Colleyville at 6 p.m.

Kevin Murphy coaches the Dragon swim team and Carolyn Hryorchuk coaches the Dragon dive team.
