Durham Elementary Grant Update

The Carroll Education Foundation grant monies recently funded the purchase of nonfiction books for math, children's dictionaries and professional materials to guide the writing workshop as written by Lucy Calkins. One of DES' campus goals includes improving reading comprehension and writing skills across curriculum. Motivated and inquisitive students will soon begin reading a variety of books and have the opportunity to write meaningful texts of their own.

Students, parents and teachers have been processing the books at DES as they come in, preparing them for check out. In January, the books will all be labeled, stamped, leveled, shelved and/or distributed and ready to be checked out so they can be in the hands of young scholars. Classrooms are already receiving dictionaries and guides to writing nonfiction - as well as the guides to using literature while introducing mathematical concepts.
