Dragon Choirs Performing Holiday Concert Tonight

Winter Break Begins Friday

The first day of winter break is Friday, December 21. All CISD campuses and offices will be closed through New Year's Day, January 1, 2008. Employees will return for a staff development day Wednesday, January 2. Students will return for the first day of classes Thursday, January 3. Semester exams take place January 16-18. The spring semester begins Wednesday, January 23.

CSHS Yearbook Staff Earns First Place In National Competition

The Carroll Senior High School yearbook staff has received a first place win with special merit from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA). This is the highest award offered in the prestigious and national ASPA Contest/Review.

Trustees Hold Special Meeting

Trustees recently earmarked two cents of a four-cent enrichment tax for technology upgrades at Carroll campuses. Rockenbaugh Elementary students are pictured above with their school's new computers.

Carroll School Board members held a special meeting December 17. Agenda items included personnel recommendations, budget amendments and executive session as permitted by Texas law. No action was taken by on the topic of oil and gas leases.

The next regularly scheduled School Board meeting is Monday, January 14.

Digging For Dragons Presents Miss Southlake 2008

Digging For Dragons is proud to present the 2008 Miss Southlake and Miss Teen Southlake Pageant. This contest in an official preliminary to the Miss Texas Pageant.

Tickets are $15 per person and proceeds directly benefit Digging For Dragons - an organization dedicated to enhancing special schools programs within Carroll ISD. The pageant takes place Saturday, January 5 at 7 p.m. at Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard.

Calendar Notice: Preschool Registration Information

Mark your calendars for upcoming Carroll ISD preschool registration events held at the former Carroll Intermediate School, 1101 N. Carroll Avenue in Southlake.

Registration for current preschool students and their siblings will take place February 4-8. Registration for the students of CISD employees is February 11-15.

A preschool information night will be held Tuesday, February 26 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. General registration for the public begins Friday, February 29 at 8:30 a.m.

Carroll ISD's preschool program is offered to students who are three years of age prior to September 1, 2008 and who will not turn six years of age before September 1, 2008. Tuition is $5,000 annually and may be paid in full or in 10 payments of $500. For more information, or to obtain a registration packet, contact Cindy Miller at 817-949-8400.

Dragon basketball fans have the opportunity to receive free admission to varsity boys' Dragon basketball games on their school's spirit night. Students must be wearing a school t-shirt and be accompanied by an adult to the game.

Thinking Green Contest Wraps, Winners To Be Announced

OurGreatCity.com would like to thank the hundreds of Carroll Dragon students who participated in the "Thinking Green" contest. These talented writers submitted creative ideas in regard to energy conservation and becoming "greener" to implement throughout the city as well as basic tips to practice at home.

One winner from each elementary and intermediate school will be chosen and announced in January. Winners will receive a $250 savings bond.

All submissions that were sent in electronic format have been posted to our OurGreatCity.com's blog at www.ourgreatcity.com/wordpress/. The essays are sorted by each participating CISD campus.

Forensic Team Takes Fourth In Sweepstakes

The Dragon forensics team finished the 2007 year with a fourth place sweepstakes win at the Plano Senior Winter Blast.

There were 94 entries in the domestic extemporaneous speaking event, with only eight advancing to finals. The Dragons made up four of the eight finalists. The following students won awards:

The Dragon diving team recently participated in the Lubbock Invitational. A total of 27 divers from eight schools competed. The following is a list of Dragon results:

The Carroll Dragon swim team hosted four schools in a swim meet at the Carroll Aquatic Center earlier this week. The JV team competed for the Dragons against varsity teams from Haltom, Richland, Fort Worth Christian and Harvest Christian. The Dragons came in first place. Below is a list of results from the competition.

With Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to the family of former CISD custodian James Leroy Davidson. Mr. Davidson died December 15; he was a beloved Carroll employee and avid Dragon fan. Funeral services were held earlier this week in Fort Worth.

And to Stephanie Gillette (Durham Elementary) following the sudden death of her father-in-law December 18. Funeral services will take place in Michigan.

Dragon Hockey Announcements

Dragon Classic Holiday Hockey Tournament Approaching:
The Southlake Carroll Hockey Association (SCHA) is hosting the Dragon Classic Holiday Hockey Tournament December 28-30 for area high school hockey teams. The tournament will include junior varsity and varsity divisions. This event takes place at the Dr. Pepper Stars Center in Euless. Skate Free With The Dragon Hockey Team: The SCHA Dragons are hosting a free holiday skate Saturday, December 29 at 3:15 p.m. at the Dr. Pepper Stars Center in Euless. Southlake Youth Of The Year Search Is Underway

The Southlake Youth Action Commission and the Southlake Chamber of Commerce are searching for the 2007 Youth of the Year, which will be presented at the February 29 Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet.

SYAC 2007 Youth of the Year Nomination Form

The Southlake Youth Action Commission was created by the Southlake City Council in 1994 to generate broad-base public awareness of and support for youth. The Commission is advisory in nature. They are encouraged to make a difference in the community through volunteering.

10th Annual State-Fish Art Contest: Call For Entries

Students across the United States have the opportunity to win recognition and prizes while learning about state-fish species, aquatic habitats and conservation. The State-Fish Art Contest uses art to catch the imagination of youth while teaching fisheries conservation.

A talented artist in grades 10-12 will be selected as the national “Best of Show” winner and will receive a $2,500 tuition scholarship to attend The Art Institutes International Minnesota (Ai Minnesota), a leading creative college for design, culinary, and media arts education located in downtown Minneapolis. The first-runner up nationally in grades 10-12 will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship to Ai Minnesota.

Entries must be postmarked by March 31, 2008. Winners will be announced May 1, 2008. The 10th Annual Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art Contest is open to all students in grades 4 through 12. To enter, young artists nationwide must create an illustration of their chosen state-fish. A written composition on its behavior, habitat, and conservation is also required.

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra To Host Young Artist Competition

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's third annual Young Artist Competition will be held Sunday, March 2 at the Van Cliburn Recital Hall in downtown Fort Worth. The application deadline is Monday, January 28.
