Trustees Call Special Meeting December 17 The Carroll School Board is calling a special meeting Monday, December 17 to handle a few more items of school business before winter break. Trustees will meet at 3:30 p.m. in the Cabinet Room of the Administration Center, 3051 Dove Road in Grapevine. The Board is expected to consider personnel hirings, including the position of Director of Information and Computer Services, as well as, discuss and possibly take action on the topics of oil and gas leases and the district attendance policy. The Budget & Finance Committee is still scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. that same evening in the Cabinet Room at the Administration Center. Carroll to Establish Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee School Board members have authorized the Carroll ISD Administration to establish a Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee to study district needs. The decision came during the December 10 School Board meeting, but was prompted by a recommendation from members of the Budget & Finance Committee last month. Members of that committee encouraged the Board to seat a citizen’s advisory committee after hearing about projected residential housing developments and demographic projections for student enrollment. Superintendent David J. Faltys said the next step is for the Administration to develop a process for selecting citizens, parents and employees to serve on the facilities planning committee. Whatever the process ends up being, the committee should represent a cross-section of the community, he said. Residential developments north of Highway 114 are causing projections at the elementary and intermediate grade levels to be over building capacities. School officials hired a professional demographer to study the situation. They have also been meeting with city planners to prepare for potential increases in student enrollment. The district’s last bond election was in February 2006. Carroll voters approved a $24.5 million capital improvements package, but rejected a $19.5 million technology package. By law, Texas School Boards have only two options for holding bond elections: May and November. Trustees say they want the committee to study all options and facaility needs before making a final recommendation. Mike Landers Approved As Assistant At Johnson Johnson Elementary School has a new assistant principal. On Monday, the Carroll School Board approved the hiring of Mike Landers to fill the position vacated by Mary Johnston who accepted a principal’s position recently in Dallas ISD. Landers is a two-time Campus Teacher of the Year nominee, coming to CISD from the Birdville school district. He has over eight years of experience as a professional public school educator of math and science at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as more than four years as an administrator in a private school setting. His background also includes 12 years of managerial experience in accounting, finance and human resources. Landers received his Master’s of Education degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2007 and his Bachelor’s of Science degree from North Texas State University in 1986. He has presented at multiple state and national conferences and was a Disney All-American Teacher nominee during the 2003-2004 school year. Verizon Grants $8,000 To CISD Literacy Program
Verizon has awarded an $8,000 grant to Carroll Independent School District for their Literacy Assessment Program targeted to grades 3 through 6. The program will provide reading assessment tools based on scientific research and will provide information to teachers, enabling them to effectively plan and deliver reading instruction to the students. Carroll ISD has many transfers in and out of the district. As a result, students often arrive in the district without having received instruction in the curriculum required by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills program. The grant from Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, will fund the purchase of Developmental Reading Assessment, Second Edition (DRA2) kits. These kits will provide teachers with diagnostic tools to monitor the student’s progress, ensuring that all students in grades 3 through 6 are reading and comprehending instructional materials at their grade level or above. “Literacy is one of Verizon Foundation’s major funding priorities due to its enormous impact on education, health and economic development,” said David Russell, Verizon Vice President-External Affairs. “We believe in forming partnerships with the schools in the communities we serve to provide the tools necessary to grow successful, independent readers.” The Verizon Foundation is committed to improving literacy and K-12 education; fostering awareness and prevention of domestic violence; and promoting the use of technology in health-care delivery. In 2006, the Foundation awarded more than $69 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the United States and abroad. The Foundation also matched charitable donations from Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $29 million in combined contributions. Under the Foundation’s Verizon Volunteer initiative, one of the nation’s largest employee-volunteer programs, company employees and retirees have also contributed nearly three million hours of community service since Verizon’s inception in 2000. Reminder: 2008-2009 Calendar Feedback Needed Carroll ISD is seeking staff and public input on the proposed 2008-2009 school calendar. A copy of the calendar has been posted to the CISD website for public review. Members of the District Advisory Committee, comprised of employees and parents, submitted the proposed calendar for consideration. Public input was shared with Trustees, along with the proposed calendar, at their December 10 meeting. The Board is expected to vote on a final calendar their January 14, 2008 meeting. To view the document and submit your feedback, click on the link below: Proposed 2008-2009 School Calendar Inclement Weather Procedures Communicated
.Weather-related school closings and delays will be communicated to employees and parents via the district's emergency telephone notification system - Connect-ED. Decisions will be made prior to 6 a.m. The Connect-Ed system can call the emergency contact numbers (up to six for each student) simultaneously. The caller identification will show the school number as 817-949-5190. To update your emergency contact information, please call 817-949-5190 and leave CISD officials a message that includes your name, your child's name, and your up-to-date contact information. Official announcements during inclement weather will still be made on WBAP News Talk 820 AM and on KXAS - TV Channel 5, KDFW Fox 4 News and WFAA Channel 8. When the situation permits, the district will also post closings to the district's website and on CISD Cable TV 30 (Charter) and 33 (Verizon FiOS) in Southlake. However, weather conditions often prevent school officials from relying on these communication methods. Parents and employees should use messages from the Connect-ED telephone notification system as the primary means for learning about weather-related closures and delays. The public can still turn to radio and television reports as a back-up or alternative way to confirm notification. Sometimes, CISD opens on a delayed schedule due to bad weather. However, school is rarely dismissed early for bad weather conditions because of working parents and the safety concern with sending children home without adult supervision. CISD will make every attempt to broadly communicate weather-related decisions using the Connect-ED emergency telephone notification system and Dallas-Fort Worth media. Questions about our procedures may be directed to the Communications & Marketing Office at 817-949-7080. Below is a list of the remaining holiday programs at CISD schools: Monday, December 17 Tuesday, December 18 Wednesday, December 19 Middle School Soccer Meeting Slated December 18 An informational meeting regarding Carroll ISD's middle school soccer program will be held Tuesday, December 18.
