Trustees Adopt 2007-2008 Calendar, Move Start Date At the December 11 Board meeting, Trustees approved a revised
version of the proposed 2007-2008 school calendar. After reviewing a
proposed calendar with the August 29 start date, the District Advisory
Committee developed a summary of comments from faculty, staff and parents
that was shared with Trustees. In addition, feedback was solicicted from
the community. The Board, however, voted to
move
the first day of school to Monday, August
27.
This calendar change followed discussion by
Trustees who cited a desire to create alignment and consistency with
surrounding districts and the request to make the first week of school
more convenient for parents. As a result, the last day of school will
be June 4, 2008. Starting school two days earlier costs the district
approximately $300,000 in one-time salary accruals.
* If the June bad weather day is not utilized, the teacher work day will be moved up to June 5. The only portion of the calendar still up
for discussion involves the number of early release days in August for
K-4. A state wavier provides CISD with six early release days during
the course of the school year. At the K-4 level, CISD staff use these
days primarily for student readiness assessments in reading. At the 5-6
level, these days are used for additional professional development. Secondary
students (grades 7-12) are released early during semester exams. The
scheduling of K-4 early release days will be discussed further
at the January 22 Board meeting. 2007-2008 Approved School Calendar January Workshop Slated To Study Scheduling Options Trustees have scheduled a Board workshop for Monday, January 8 to discuss high school scheduling options. This comes on the heels of the State Board of Education's approval of new graduation plans. The new plans increase the number of math and science credits a student must earn to receive a diploma. The new plans, known as 4x4, do not affect students currently enrolled in high school. However, current eighth graders will be the first group of students who follow these revised plans as ninth graders next year. A scheduling plan must be implemented to accomodate the needs of the 84% of Carroll students who participate in extra-curricular or co-curricular activities. The Administration originally brought six scheduling options to the Board, but has since narrowed the list down to just a couple of options that are deemed feasible. At the January 8 workshop, Trustees will study scheduling options and associated costs. Students currently operate on a modified A/B block - taking seven classes. Administrators are proposing an eight-period block schedule. This revised schedule would require the district to hire approximately 10 additional teachers. Historical Society Presents Trustees With Tribute To Former Superintendent The Southlake Historical Society presented Trustees on Monday with a framed picture of Burrell Estelle Carroll, the district's namesake. Mr. Carroll was the Tarrant County Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1917 to 1926. In 1919 three rural schools in the Southlake area were consolidated to form the Carroll Common School District. The Historical Society restored an original photo of Mr. Carroll and had it framed for Monday's presentation to CISD Board members as a tribute to the district's history and first superintendent.
