Carroll ISD, Schools Earn Gold Honors

All 11 Carroll ISD campuses and the district have earned the Texas Education Agency's 2007 Gold Performance Acknowledgments. The district was honored in 12 of 12 categories and each campus also earned multiple awards.

The state's Gold Performance Acknowledgment (GPA) system is used to acknowledge districts and campuses for high academic performance on various indicators, such as commended performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, college admissions tests, attendance rates and Advanced Placement exams.

This is the first year for the label of "Commended" to be appended to the state accountability ratings if the campus or district earns a GPA for at least 50 percent of the TAKS commended performance indicators in which the campus or district is evaluated. Only campuses and districts rated Academically Acceptable or higher are eligible to receive this label. Carroll earned a total of five Commended labels.

Theatre Department Welcomes Broadway Visitor

Cast and crew of Carroll Theatre Department’s The Phantom of the Opera were given great encouragement from a very qualified source recently when Bert Fink, Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing with R&H Theatricals, a division of the Rodgers and Hammerstein organization in New York, dropped in on one of their rehearsals and stayed behind to chat with students afterward.

Mr. Fink was involved with the original London West-End production from 1986, then Broadway’s longest-running production and national tours of the show. He shared stage stories and the assembled student cast was also able to receive first hand advice from Mr. Fink.

The Carroll Theatre Department made a great impression on Mr. Fink and he mentioned that the cast was very impressive and the community was fortunate to have the Carroll Theatre directors and the department’s resources to take on the amateur staging of The Phantom of the Opera. As a direct result of Mr. Fink’s visit, R&H Theatricals Vice President, Charlie Scatamacchia now plans to attend one of the performances in December.

Directors Stacie and Roald Martinsen will open The Phantom of the Opera at Carroll Senior High School Friday, November 30 at 7.30 p.m., with five more shows to follow on December 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. For information on the production, and to purchase tickets online, visit www.dragondrama.net.
