Curtain Opens On The Phantom Of The Opera Friday

The wait is drawing to a close for theatre fans everywhere who have anticipated the curtain opening on the Carroll Theatre Department's production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. The opening show takes place in the Carroll Senior High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 30- just 18 weeks after being given the news of the historic selection.

Chosen as only one of four high schools in the nation to perform Broadway's longest running show, Carroll Theatre Co-Directors Roald and Stacie Martinsen along with Dragon students, staff members, parents and community volunteers have been working around the clock preparing for the production. Carroll was one of only four high schools in the nation chosen to produce the famed musical, and the Dragons will be the first to perform it.

"We are so proud of all the students, parents, teachers, sponsors and staff for their unbelievable contributions to the success of this production," said Stacie Martinsen. "This will be a memory all of us will cherish for the rest of our lives."

Football Team Continues Season In Playoffs

The Dragons have advanced to the third round of the playoffs.

The Dragon football team takes on Abilene High Saturday, December 1. Kick off is 1 p.m. at Texas Stadium.

Pre-game tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Tickets are on sale until noon Friday at the following campuses: Carroll Senior High, Carroll High, Carroll Middle, Dawson Middle, Durham Elementary and Johnson Elementary. All tickets the day of the game are $10.

The cost to park at Texas Stadium is $10. Parking lots open at 11 a.m. and gates open at 11:30 a.m. Dragon fans should enter near gate 3.

Metro Sports Communications continues its play-by play-coverage of Dragon football through the playoffs. Games will be broadcast on radio station KKGM 1630 AM. Broadcasts can also be heard online at www.kkgmam.com. Fans listening inside Texas Stadium can tune to the Dragons' "Road Radio" feed to hear the game broadcast. The frequency is 88.9 FM. Airtime will begin at noon to include a special one-hour "Countdown To Kickoff" program.

District Seeking Feedback On 2008-2009 Calendar

Carroll ISD is seeking staff and public input on the proposed 2008-2009 school calendar. A copy of the calendar has been posted to the CISD website for public review.

Members of the District Advisory Committee, comprised of employees and parents, submitted the proposed calendar for consideration. Public input will be shared with Trustees, along with the proposed calendar, at their December 10 meeting.

December School Board, DAC Meeting Dates Moved

The Carroll School Board will meet one time next month on Monday, December 10. Open session will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Dragon cross country team along with boys' runner Colby Lowe will be recognized for their State championships in addition to All State Jazz Band musician Alex Clark. A complete agenda will be posted to the District's website at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.

The District Advisory Committee (DAC) has rescheduled its meeting for Tuesday, December 11. DAC meets from 5 to 7 p.m. in the library of Dawson Middle School, 400 S. Kimball Avenue.

Budget & Finance Committee To Meet December 17

Carroll ISD's Budget & Finance Committee will meet Monday, December 17. Topics of discussion will include student fees and a presentation by CISD Booster Clubs and PTOs regarding use of the trademarked Dragon logo. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the CISD Administration Center's cabinet meeting room.

Academic Excellence Indicator Reports Available Online

The Texas Education Agency has released its 2006-2007 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS). The AEIS is a state report issued annually to local school districts and campuses. It contains information on student enrollment, test scores, attendance, special acknowledgements and other pertinent data.

Copies of the AEIS report for Carroll ISD are available electronically on the CISD website. Click the link below to access this information. The state has not yet released the 2006-2007 individual School Report Cards.

The Carroll Connection Gets Extreme Makeover

The Carroll Connection newsletter has been given an extreme makeover. The publication, which has a new look with additional pages, is hitting the mailboxes of every residential and commercial taxpayer in Carroll ISD in the coming days. This publication will now be mailed twice each year - once in the fall and once in the spring.

Theatre Department Fundraiser Wraps December 5

The Carroll Theatre Department's fundraiser at Chick-fil-A of Southlake has been extended one week. A portion of all purchases made at Chick-fil-A Wednesday, December 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. will help support CISD's production of The Phantom of the Opera.

Just mention Carroll Theatre at the time of purchase and you, too, can be a "Phantom Phan!"

Cable TV Channel Experiencing Technical Difficulties

Carroll ISD's cable television channel (Channel 30 for Charter customers and Channel 33 for Verizon FiOS customers) is currently experiencing difficulties with the audio signal. DES Spirit Shop Open All Day Today

Durham Elementary School's Spirit Shop is open today (November 29) from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4:30 to 8 p.m. The DES Spirit Shop is stocked with holiday gift items and stocking stuffers including ornaments, jewelry, sports balls, purses, wallets and pillows.

Apparel for all ages just arrived this week with 15 new designs. Vests for moms, golf shirts for dads as well as fleece jackets, sweatshirts and long-sleeve shirts for the whole family will be available. Don’t forget to check out the sale items, too. The DES Spirit Shop has a wide selection of Dragon apparel for just $10.

Essay Contest Deadline Extended

OurGreatCity.com has extended the deadline to enter the "Dragons Thinking Green" contest. Interested students now have until Saturday, December 15 to submit an essay on the topic of how their town can become more environmentally friendly or "greener." One student from each CISD elementary and intermediate campus will be awarded with a $250 savings bond based on submitted essays.

Save The Date: Parent University 2008

Former Dragon Quarterback Up For O'Brien, Heisman Awards

Former Carroll Dragon football player Chase Daniel is in the running for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award® as well the Heisman Trophy. Daniel is enjoying a successful college career as quarterback for the University of Missouri Tigers.

Daniel is one of three finalists for the O'Brien award which honors the nation’s best college quarterback. The winner is chosen based on athletic skills, academic performance, team spirit, character, leadership and sportsmanship. Five percent of fans' votes go toward determining the winner. Dawson Marks Fifth Anniversary With Celebration

The students and staff of Dawson Middle School celebrated their school’s fifth anniversary with a special ceremony November 27. Activities included student performances from the DMS band and choir along with speeches, a reception and special recognition of the family members of the school’s namesake, George Dawson.

Dawson was a Dallas native who learned to read at the age of 98 and published a book shortly thereafter. Mr. Dawson's legacy and love of learning has been the foundation of excellence DMS has built upon since opening its doors to seventh and eighth grade students in the fall of 2002.

Volleyball Team Makes Presentation To Komen Foundation

Members of the Lady Dragon volleyball team made a special presentation today to the Tarrant County Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The players collected over $10,000 for breast cancer research and awareness with their 2007 "Lady Dragon Play For The Cure" campaign.

CMS PALS Group Hosting Coin Drive

Carroll Middle School's Peer Assisted Leadership (PALS) group is hosting a coin drive December 3-12. The money raised is spent on "angels" in the Southlake/Grapevine area that would not have a holiday if not for donations.

CMS students will have the opportunity to donate money to the fund during lunch periods. The PALS group will be hard at work, following the drive, to shop, wrap and help distribute the presents.

RES Raises Money For Diabetes With School Walk

Nearly 300 people of all ages walked three miles for Diabetes research

Carroll Dragon students and staff burned calories and raised nearly $2,000 for Diabetes research with a school walk hosted by Rockenbaugh Elementary School.

Close to 300 people participated in the three-mile walk that took place November 28 at RES.

The money will be donated to the American Diabetes Association. This event was organized by RES physical education teachers Tricia Pate and Pam Schneider.

Dragons Sink Competition At Swim Meet

A Lady Dragon diver shows her skills at the North TISCA meet held November 16-17

The Dragons left smoke on the water at the North Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (TISCA) Invitational Swimming & Diving Meet November 16-17 at Loos Natatorium. More than 70 boys' and 70 girls' teams were entered and competed in this prestigious meet.

The Lady Dragons finished in first place while the Dragon boys finished fourth. This was the first time in Carroll history to bring home a title at the North Tisca Invitational, and the first time the Lady Dragons have ever defeated Plano Senior High's team.

The Dragons had many scoring swims, including 11 of 12 relays that made it back for finals and scored team points. Below is a list of results from the competition.

Group Puts Knitting Skills To Work For Good Cause

 

The Carroll Knitting Club plans to be hard at work all year long so that it will have many completed items to give to people in need next winter.

These talented Carroll knitters are staff, students and parents from various CISD campuses. The group is in need of donations of any color of yarn.

The club is donating its completed work to Phillip's Wish. Phillip's Wish is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes blankets, hats, scarves, mittens, socks and personal hygiene items to the homeless. For more information, visit www.phillipswish.com.

Carroll Students Compete In World Chess Championships

A pair of Carroll siblings competed earlier this month in the 2007 World Youth Chess Tournament held in Turkey.

Sarah Chiang, a student at Eubanks Intermediate, took home the silver medal while her brother Jonathan, a student at Carroll Elementary, placed sixth in the competition. Mark Calendars For 6th Annual Red Bag Food Drive

The weekend of December 1-2, Christmas is for Children and Altrusa DFW will launch their sixth annual Red Bag Food Drive. Dozens of community volunteers will deliver bright red food bags to 5,500 Southlake homes. Fliers attached to the red bags will instruct recipients to fill the bags with non-perishable boxed or canned food items and place them on their front porch for pick-up the afternoon of Sunday, December 9.

Holiday Musical To Entertain Audiences Of All Ages

Life Stage Theatre is hosting Scrooge: The Musical next month. The book, musical and lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse.

Community Partnerships Bring Nature Prints To DES


Mr. and Mrs. Paul Spain donated 12 of 25 Signed/Limited Edition sets of the birds of the Cross Timbers Giclee prints by Dr. Ray Chancellor to Durham Elementary School during the November 14 DES faculty meeting.

Dr. Chancellor, a Southlake resident, environmentalist, and artist, has been instrumental in educating DES students and parents along with Carroll staff and local community members, about the wonders of the Southlake Cove Ecosystem. The prints were made possible by the Bob Jones Nature Center.

American Red Cross Seeking Heroes Nominations

The Chisholm Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross is preparing for its second annual Stars at Night: A Celebration of Community Heroes gala on March 22, 2008 at the Fort Worth Club. The organization needs help identifying the community's heroes. Heroes are often among us everyday and we don't even realize it. They may be a family member, neighbor, local law enforcement officer or a child in your school. This spring, the Red Cross will honor those individuals who have gone above and beyond what is expected to benefit the lives of others. Their unselfish acts deserve to be recognized.

Nominees should be residents of Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, Wise or Hood County. The actions for which they are being nominated should have occurred within the past calendar year. Direct involvement with the Red Cross is not required for an individual to be nominated or selected. Please review the category descriptions below and nominate your hero today!

Lifesaver of the Year: An individual or small group who used life-saving skills such as first aid, CPR, or an AED to save a human life within the past calendar year. This award is intended to recognize an individual or group responding to an emergency in a nonprofessional capacity.

Emergency Responder of the Year: A professional emergency responder, or team of responders (firefighter, law enforcement officer, medical worker, 911 dispatcher, etc.), who assisted someone in a way above and beyond what was expected in a time of extraordinary need. This person may have saved a life or performed an act that made our community a safer place to live. The actions for which they are being considered will be considered whether the individual was on or off-duty.

Military Member of the Year: An active or reserve member of the military who has performed an act of heroism or made a significant contribution to another soldier, military unit, or military family, or has helped promote community preparedness, emergency response or vital safety training for the men and women of the Armed Forces.

Diversity Ambassador of the Year: An individual from an ethnically diverse background who has worked to bridge the gap between diverse communities and the vital network of resources and services that are available to meet humanitarian needs.

Young Good Samaritan of the Year: A person under 21 years in age who has performed an unexpected or significant act of heroism, or who has displayed outstanding leadership to make an impact in their community.

Community Spirit Award: A civic, government or business leader who has made a significant contribution to the well being of their community. This person should demonstrate exceptional leadership and impacted his or her neighbors and/or the community at-large.
