Reminder: Inclement Weather Procedure

Decisions about school closings due to inclement weather are made by CISD Administrators and Transportation officials prior to 6 a.m. Official announcements during inclement weather are made on WBAP News Talk 820 AM and on KXAS - TV Channel 5, Fox 4 News and WFAA Channel 8. When the situation permits, the district will also post closings to the district's web site and on CISD Cable TV 30 (Charter) and 33 (Verizon FiOS) in Southlake. However, weather conditions often prevent school officials from relying on these communication methods.

Parents are encouraged to turn to WBAP 820 for official announcements regarding school closings. Sometimes, CISD opens on a delayed schedule due to bad weather. However, school is rarely dismissed early for bad weather conditions because of working parents and the safety concern with sending children home without adult supervision. CISD will make every attempt to broadly communicate weather-related decisions.

Questions about our procedures may be directed to the Communications & Marketing Office at 817-949-7080.

Keep Southlake Beautiful Grant Update

Durham students are already enjoying the benefits of the Keep Southlake Beautiful Grants that were recently awarded to the DES Science Department this fall. The school received five grants for $150 each. The grant applications followed the guidelines of the Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) programs, including environmental education, litter, water conservation, pollution and beautification and community improvement/outreach.

Below is a description and update regarding each of the Keep Southlake Beautiful grants awarded to DES:

Vegetable Garden grant – this grant provided plants, seeds and soil amendments for the DES vegetable garden. First graders have been participating in these labs throughout the fall. They added soil amendments to their raised beds before they planted fall vegetables. The cool weather and rain has provided a wonderful growing season for our vegetables.

Arbor grant – DES was able to replace a wooden arbor with a wrought iron structure. Thanks to the engineering power of volunteer Chuck Fish, the arbor has been painted and cemented into place. Students enjoy walking under the arbor each time they visit the garden.

Wildflower grant – Three primary leveled book sets were purchased to complement the bluebonnet seeds that the kindergarten students will broadcast along the roadside this winter. Students will read about butterflies, ladybugs, and other insects.

Wildscape Gardening grant– Wildscape plants will be purchased and planted in the butterfly and hummingbird gardens this spring.

Environmental Books grant – A collection of leveled readers have been purchased that promote the care of the environment and using resources wisely.

DES students show their appreciation to Keep Southlake Beautiful for grant donations

Durham Elementary's Cardboard Boat Regatta is just around the corner and students are already hard at work preparing for this special event. They are charged with designing and constructing a boat that will hold and safely carry them and a partner across the CISD Aquatics Center pool.

DES fourth graders will work with cups, foil and paper to learn the principals of boat building, buoyancy and density. Each lesson provides challenges and opportunities for creativity and questions to be answered. DES students and their parents are invited to attend a Boat Building Workshop Thursday, November 30 from 6 to 7 pm in the DES library. A special thanks to Bates Container’s annual donation of 120 sheets of cardboard.

The 3rd Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta takes place Friday, January 26 at 9 am in the Aquatics Center.
