Lady Dragon Cross Country Team Wins State Championship
The Lady Dragon cross country team is celebrating a State Championship win after learning this week that they finished first place in Saturday's State 5A meet. The team was originally awarded second place following a tie breaker, but the University Interscholastic League (UIL) later confirmed an error in the place results, giving the Lady Dragons the first place win for the third consecutive year. The Lady Dragon State cross country runners are Tara Upshaw, Jessica Harper, Taylor Stephens, Lauren Hill, Lucia Xiong, Caitlin Gilbert and Jessica Ferber. Dragon fans were already celebrating the individual title won by Dragon runner Colby Lowe, who also led the boys' team to a second place finish at state - just six points behind Kingwood's nationally-ranked team. This is Colby's second individual state championship and the team's fourth consecutive year to get to the State medal stand. The Dragon boys who competed at State were C.J. Brown (3rd), Neal Smith, John Depinto, Ahmed Toure, Evan Garner and Josh Weaver. A complete list of results and video footage is posted

Regular hours will resume Monday, November 26. Board Extends Superintendent's Contract
The Carroll School Board conducted its annual evaluation of Superintendent David J. Faltys at Monday evening's Board meeting. Although the details of the evaluation are confidential by law, Trustees gave Dr. Faltys a strong vote of confidence by extending his contract another year and giving him a pay increase. The new contract will be good through June 30, 2012. Trustees increased the Superintendent's base salary to $200,000 and capped his retirement reimbursement at $15,000 to stay more competitive with the market. School Board Earmarks Additional $477,000 For Technology Carroll School Trustees voted Monday to earmark an additional one-penny of the district's four-cent enrichment tax toward hardware and software purchases. The $477,000 generated by the one-cent tax will help the district continue its program to replace aging technology at campuses districtwide. In September, Trustees voted to earmark the first $477,000 for technology purchases. School officials say the up-to-date technology will help CISD accomplish two of its district goals: raising the academic challenge and performance of each student, and providing a school environment supportive of learning. Also Monday evening, Trustees approved the purchase of 110 Dell desktop computers with the associated software packages. This purchase is being paid for with the remaining $121,660 of the first penny of the enrichment tax. Budget & Finance Members Recommend Bond Steering Committee Members of the Carroll ISD advisory committee for Budget & Finance were on hand at Monday's School Board meeting to recommend that Trustees seat a citizen's bond steering committee. Representatives Tina Wasserman, Ed Beauvais and Robert Williams addressed the Board, asking for a citizen's committee to study building capacities and classroom needs. The recommendation is based on discussion by the Budget & Finance Committee following a November presentation on the 2007 demographic study and a meeting with City of Southlake planners. Trustees took no immediate action on the Committee's recommendation. In Other Business, the School Board. . .

Following the great success of last month’s Dragon Classic that raised $88,000, the CHS/CSHS PTSO presented checks totaling more than $44,000 at two receptions this week. On November 12, CHS Principal Rick Westfall received $22,942.72 to grant teacher wish list items at his campus, including foreign language software, computers, printers, dictionaries and science needs. Then on November 14, CSHS Principal Dr. Daniel Presley accepted a check for $21,256.99 which will fund a new sound system for the gymnasium, dance mirrors, audio visual equipment, reference books and protective technology furniture among other things. A further $44,000 will be given to Carroll Athletic Booster Club later this month. Now in its sixth year, the Dragon Classic is a two-day auction and golf tournament which raises funds for academic and fine arts needs at both high school campuses and athletic requirements for grades seven through 12. It has evolved into one of the most successful fundraisers on the CISD calendar bringing more than $330,000 of extra funding directly to where it is most needed. “The
Dragon Classic has played a crucial role in funding our teachers’ needs
from year to year,” said Westfall. “This impacts
positively on the educational process in our classrooms, fine arts and

The students and staff of Dawson Middle School are celebrating their school’s fifth anniversary with a ceremony Tuesday, November 27. Activities will include student performances, speeches, a reception and special recognition of the family members of the school’s namesake, George Dawson.
Dawson was a Dallas native who learned to read at the age of 98 and published a book shortly thereafter. Mr. Dawson was an inspiration to students of all ages and encouraged children and adults, alike, to be life-long learners. He passed away at the age of 103 but not before Carroll ISD honored him by giving its newest school his name. Dawson Middle School opened its doors to seventh and eighth grade students for the first time in the fall of 2002. Five years later, the campus has built its foundation upon the legacy of learning Mr. Dawson left behind. First-year DMS administrators have been invited to attend the anniversary celebration along with representatives from the Dallas County Community College District’s (DCCCD) Office of Educational Partnerships. This organization is affiliated with the African American Read-In and the Dawson Literacy Campaign. Just last spring, DMS Principal Trudie Jackson and CISD Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services Dr. Jan Morgan took a group of DMS students to participate in the African American Read-In that celebrates literacy during Black History Month. Dawson Middle’s anniversary celebration is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the campus of DMS, 400 S. Kimball Avenue in Southlake. Carroll Middle School Presents Our Town

Dragon Swim, Dive Teams Compete In Kingwood Meet The Carroll Dragon swim and dive teams recently competed in Kingwood. The competition brought out some excellent swims and gave the team a point of reference for the continuation of the season. The defending State 5A Kingwood boys' team proved too tough for the Dragons. The team swam well despite falling to the Mustangs 99-86. The Lady Dragons beat Kingwood's team 96-90, with many excellent swims and some great diving. Kingwood's girls' team finished sixth at the 5A State Meet last year, while Carroll was 17th, so this outcome bodes well for the Lady Dragons goal for State this year.
