Durham Elementary Cow Is A Work of Art

Durham Elementary students have been hard at work painting their Southlake Stampede calf, which is sponsored by the Bill Lafavers family, owners of The Feedstore barbecue restaurant. DES chose to name their beautiful bovine "Georgia O'Calf" in honor of American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. O'Keefe was chosen because of her determination, creative spirit and success as an artist.

The students voted on their favorite Georgia O’Keefe paintings that would be depicted on the calf. Six paintings were chosen: “Oriental Poppy," "Poppies," “Dark and Lavender Leaf,” “Calla Lilies,” “Lily on Black" and “Ram Skull." It was decided later to paint bluebonnets on Georgia’s legs so it would appear she was standing in a field of Texas bluebonnets!

All of the painting was done by DES third graders during their art classes. Several fourth grade students volunteered to give up recess time to help assist with the touch-up painting and blending. Georgia O'Calf is on display and will eventually be auctioned off at a community event.
