Lady Dragons Raise $1,500 For Breast Cancer Awareness

Normally opposing teams are green with envy when they are beaten by the Lady Dragons. Instead, fans and athletes from Keller were seeing pink at Tuesday night's volleyball game. Keller and Carroll teams and fans joined together to promote a Pink Out in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

CISD organizer Coach Shannan Fears said the crowd was awesome; the CISD drumline was amazing and the Lady Dragons pulled off a great win. Not to mention, everyone was in PINK! The icing on the cake was that the awareness effort raised $1,500 for cancer research.

Special thanks to Dr. Daniel Presley and Mr. Rick Westfall for encouraging staff and students to get involved. Thanks also to Coach Wyvonne Walling for dedicating this year's volleyball season to breast cancer awareness. Thanks also to all the teachers, staff and fans from both schools for supporting this effort.

A similar event is planned during basketball season.

Dawson Volleyball Teams Dominate In Local Tournaments

The Dawson Lady Dragon Volleyball teams had a very successful weekend at both the Allen and Northwest Tournaments. The 7th Grade Green team placed second in the Northwest Tournament, and the 8th Grade Green team placed third.

The 7th and 8th Grade Black Teams traveled to Allen early Saturday morning. During pool play the teams were matched against Evans Middle School from McKinney, which both teams defeated. The second match of the morning came against Lovejoy Middle School of Lovejoy ISD. Each grade-level team struggled in this match as one game was won and one game was lost. The third contest of the morning featured the Hockaday School from Dallas and the Lady Dragons. The Lady Dragons again prevailed and each grade level advanced as first place from their pool. The 7th grade team won the first match of bracket play. They were defeated by Trinity Christian in the semi-finals, but continued on to win third place. Emily Johannsen and Sutton Sunstrum were All-Tournament team members.

The 8th Grade Black team competed against Johnson Middle School of McKinney. They had a player that was quite good, but net play by Olivia Miano, Taylor Walter, and Fallon Keeter and back row passing by Maddie Newman prevailed and the Lady Dragons came away with a victory. In the semi-final match the Lady Dragons faced off against Trinity Christian Academy of Addison. After an impressive game one, emotions got the better of the Lady Dragons and game two was lost. However, Dawson showed their metal and stormed back to take game three with smart placement of the ball by Mackenzie Burnett and awesome serving by Madison Manning to advance to the championship round.

The Hawks of Red Oak were a force to be reckoned with as they brought with them a quite impressive player. However, they didn't have the secret weapons of the Lady Dragons. Blocking by Fallon Keeter, Olivia Miano and Brooke O'Brien proved too much for the Hawks. This allowed Samantha Sternfeld to make perfect passes to Audrey Defferari which allowed her to work her magic with a set and final kill from Caitlin Ciucevich to win the match and the tournament. The weekend was capped off with Audrey Defferari and Olivia Miano receiving All-Tournament team.
