This amendment comes on the heels of recent changes to the Texas Education Agency's testing calendar. Various forms of the TAKS assessment will be administered the week of April 28 - requiring District officials to make a calendar change to avoid testing students on the first day back from a holiday.

Governor Perry Proclaims October As Dyslexia Awareness Month

Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed October 2007 as Dyslexia Awareness Month. See proclamation below.

State of Texas
Office of the Governor

Dyslexia is a common learning disability that affects language-related skills including reading, spelling, writing and speaking. It is a disability that daily creates stressful school and work environments for many Texans.

Dyslexia is a lifelong disorder buy many people have managed to cope with it successfully. The cause of dyslexia is unclear and an early diagnosis is critical in developing better ways to cope. With a proper diagnosis, individuals are taught an appropriate, systematic and structured method of learning that enables them to excel in their school and work environments.

October has been designated as Dyslexia Awareness Month in order to raise awareness of the learning disability. It is vital to communicate the importance of an early diagnosis in order to provide the necessary assistance and guidance to those affected by dyslexia.

I encourage all Texans to learn about dyslexia and to support those affected by it. It is essential to recognize the efforts of parents, teachers, educators and professionals who are working to assist individuals with dyslexia. Their success and guidance is very important to the Lone Star State.

Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas do hereby proclaim October 2007, Dyslexia Awareness Month in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof.

In official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this the 18th day of October, 2007.

Governor Rick Perry
