Phone Notification System Launches Monday

The first district-wide message of Carroll ISD's new telephone notification system, Connect-Ed, will be sent at 6 p.m. on Monday, October 29. This will be a general announcement notifying parents of the system’s official implementation. If there are questions after this initial message, please direct them to CISD's dedicated Connect-ED messaging phone line at 817-949-5190.

It is important for CISD to have an up-to-date home telephone number for each student. Call 817-949-5190 or 817-949-7080 if home telephone numbers have changed or if you desire to have additional emergency numbers included in the calling system (i.e. parent’s cell, work number, caregiver’s cell phone, etc.). CISD can place six emergency numbers total in the system for each student, but keep in mind these emergency numbers will all receive emergency messages from the CISD Connect-ED system.

For more information regarding Connect-ED, please call CISD's Communications & Marketing Department at 817-949-5190 or 817-949-7080.

Health Report Update: Staph Infections

CISD received confirmation yesterday of its second case of MRSA staph infection at a secondary school. In an effort to protect the confidentiality of student health information, CISD has not identified the secondary campuses where the more drug-resistant strains have been confirmed, but school officials are assuring parents that precautions are being taken to minimize the spread of staph. CISD is managing the MRSA situations on a case-by-case basis to reduce the risk of further infection.

To date, the district has no reported cases of even the common staph infection at elementary or intermediate schools.

The Tarrant County Health Department confirms CISD is going above and beyond in responding to this situation. The maintenance and custodial staff is working diligently to clean and disinfect the restrooms, dressing rooms and locker rooms and have even extended this process to the classrooms. Parents are encouraged to discuss with their students preventative steps to reduce personal risk. Helpful information, including a student fact sheet, has been posted to the district's Hot Topics webpage below.

Students Will Be Administered Test To Measure Progress

A new way to test the academic progress of students is being piloted at four Carroll ISD campuses. From October 29 through November 30, third through fifth grade students at Johnson Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Durham Intermediate and Eubanks Intermediate will take a series of tests called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).

DIS and EIS fifth graders will be administered MAP tests to determine each child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year in the areas of math, science, reading and language usage. JES and RES third and fourth graders will take tests in mathematics, reading and language usage. These tests are taken electronically on a computer.

This is a unique pilot program for the 2007-2008 academic year, and Carroll school officials are excited about the possibility of gaining more definitive information about individual student growth. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for each child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. With MAP tests, shorter tests are administered and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about students' growth.

"Before we begin implementation of the program district-wide, campus and instructional staff members will review the information obtained from this year’s administration to determine the degree to which the tests provide data which can positively impact and promote learning for an individual child," said Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services Dr. Jan Morgan.

For more information about MAP, contact the CISD Instructional Services Department at 817.949.7070.
