Sixth CISD Campus Notified Of Honor Roll Award

Yet another Carroll ISD campus has been notified that it has been included on the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) 2006 Honor Roll. Carroll High School Principal Rick Westfall reported receiving official notification from TBEC that the 9/10 campus was among 44 high schools in the state of Texas to receive the honor. Earlier this month, School eNews Online reported that five other CISD campuses received the 2006 TBEC Honor Roll Award. They include Johnson Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Eubanks Intermediate, Durham Intermediate and Dawson Middle School.

TBEC identifies the Honor Roll schools by analyzing three years of performance data for all Texas public schools. A school must have a high percentage of students meeting state standards on the TAKS tests in all subjects for three consecutive years, with an emphasis on how many students score at the state's highest standard - Commended - on all tests. Selection criteria account also for each school's student demographics, the number of subjects tested and the grades served."

"This year's Honor Roll Schools have achieved performance levels higher than anyone could anticipate when the TAKS testing began four years ago," said Mike McGuire, President of Chemshare Corporation in Port LaVaca, chair of the Honor Roll committee. "The success of these schools demonstrates that setting high standards and raising expectations for all students is an effective tool in raising performance."

"It's great news for Carroll to learn that six of its eleven campuses have made TBEC's prestigious Honor Roll," said Carroll Superintendent Dr. David J. Faltys. "We are extremely proud of the students, staff and campus administrators at all of these campuses. For Carroll High School to be included among only forty-four Texas high schools on the list is phenomenal."

Representatives from the Honor Roll Schools will gather in Austin on December 4 and 5 for a Sharing Seminar in which "the best learn from the best," followed by a reception and awards dinner. Elementary and intermediate campuses will be honored on December 4. Secondary campuses will be honored on December 5.

The preliminary contest will conclude by 4:45 p.m., and the top 10 bands will be announced to participate in the Finals. They have appeared in the State Marching Contest 13 times in classifications of 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. The UIL Area and State Marching Contest is held every other year for each classification since the early 1990s.

Since being in the largest 5A classification, the Dragon Band has reached the Area Level each year, but is still seeking its first trip to the State Contest. Directors are Ron Behrends, Jay Bach, and Ken Johnson. The front ensemble director is Fred Boyce and the color guard sponsor is Pam Randall. The drum majors are Devin Eddleman, Katie Jones and Michael Moore.

This year the Dragon Band's program is music from David Gillingham's "With Heart and Voice" with wind parts arranged by Dennis Fisher, from University of North Texas, and Jim Yakis, percussion score. The drill was written by Phil Clements, from University of Miami.

Carroll schools will celebrate drug-free lifestyles with other students and staff across the nation during Red Ribbon Week October 23-27. Activities are planned at each CISD campus in an effort to increase awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Cold Front Doesn't Dampen Spirits At Homecoming Parade

Starbucks at Town Square had to call in reinforcements when Mother Nature ushered in a cold front just in time for the 2006 Homecoming Parade. Many spectators were caught off guard by the fall weather though it didn't dampen the spirits or the crowd size as the school district's Homecoming Parade returned to Southlake Town Square.

Thousands of people lined the streets around the Square as more than 70 float entries carrying hundreds of pint-sized Dragons paraded by. The event was sponsored and organized by the Student Council at Carroll Senior High School and sponsor Lora Benedetti.

A 10-minute video featuring Homecoming 2006 activities is now playing periodically throughout the day on Cable TV channels 30 (Charter Communications) and 33 (Verizon FiOS) in Southlake.

Carroll Education Foundation Makes Campus Visits

The Carroll Education Foundation announced its annual teaching grants to all campuses in Carroll Friday.  Members of the CEF Board, CISD School Board and Administrators surprised teachers, principals, children and parents with a BIG CHECK and the cheers and sounds from a few of the Carroll High School drum line!  There were a total of 48 teaching grants in the amount of $93,524 distributed and awarded.

2006 CEF Grant Recipients By Campus

Since its inception in 1996, the CEF has awarded over $521,000 in the form of 227 teaching grants. The foundation is a 501-C 3 nonprofit corporation whose sole purpose is to generate and distribute resources for the benefit of the children in the Carroll Independent School District. Funds are provided for educational programs and activities not covered by the district's normal operating budget. Through donations, contributions and the CEF's annual Culinary Celebration fundraiser, the foundation is able to distribute and award these very important and much-needed teaching grants.

Writing a grant proposal is not easy. Each teacher had to identify a student need, research various ways of fulfilling that need, come up with a creative grant approach, determine all the costs involved with the implementation of the grant and organize all that data into a cohesive grant application. This takes an enormous amount of time and dedication. It is only fitting that we publicly recognize their commitment to our children's education. By funding these grants, their innovative ideas will become both a reality and an integral part of their students' curriculum.

Chick-fil-A Sponsors Character Education Curriculum For Carroll Schools

Carroll students will be studying much more than reading, writing and arithmetic during the 2006-2007 school year. This year, students will be learning some of life's most important lessons, such as responsibility, kindness and respect.

The Chick-fil-A restaurant at Southlake is partnering with seven Carroll schools to bring character education to the classroom through its chain-wide program called Core Essentials, an educational curriculum designed to give teachers and parents the necessary tools to help educate elementary-aged children about character and values.

During the current school year, Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide will provide their partner elementary schools with the chain's turnkey Core Essentials curriculum - reaching nearly 500,000 students chainwide. In the Southlake area, Carroll Elementary, Durham Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Old Union Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Durham Intermediate and Eubanks Intermediate Schools are all taking part in the program.

"In keeping with the principles held by our founder, Truett Cathy, we've had a history of providing encouragement and support for young people," said Mark Guilbert, franchise Operator of the Chick-fil-A restaurant at Southlake. "As our Core Essentials program grows each year, we are proud to continue providing resources that influence and educate children."

Through a partnership with Chick-fil-A, Core Essentials was developed by a network of parents and teachers committed to developing ideas and solutions that can be used in both the home and school environment. The three-year curriculum teaches a different character trait each month of the school year.

Schools participating in the Core Essentials program receive five educational components: a teacher's guide with lesson plans; a Core Essentials poster illustrating the nine values for the school year; a bookmark highlighting each month's value; table cards for parents with instructions for incorporating discussions about each month's value into family activities; and Value-able Cards redeemable for a free Chick-fil-A ® Kid's Meal, which teachers use to reward students "caught" displaying positive character values.

The Core Essentials curriculum is a national character education program currently being offered in more than 20 states, equipping more than 30,000 elementary school teachers with the tools to teach this unique program.

Chick-fil-A has established a reputation for supporting schools systems throughout the country with an array of programs developed to positively influence students. In 1973, Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy established a scholarship program to encourage his restaurant employees to further their education. Today, Chick-fil-A has awarded over $21 million in $1,000 college scholarships.

The company presented a $1,000 student-athlete scholarship to Carroll Senior High School Principal Dr. Daniel Presley at the October 6 football game at Dragon Stadium. In addition, Chick-fil-A is a Platinum sponsor of Carroll ISD's We Care Employee Appreciation Initiative.

School Board Alters December Meeting Schedule

When Carroll School Board members learned that five campuses had earned a spot on the Texas Business Education Coalition's (TBEC) Honor Roll, they were more than willing to change their December meeting schedule to accommodate the awards reception in Austin.

School Board President Erin Shoupp said Monday that Trustees were originally scheduled to meet on the first and third Mondays in December, but the Board wants to ensure that Superintendent David Faltys and other central office administrators can be represented at the December 4 TBEC awards reception. At that time, five Carroll principals will accept honors for their campus' achievement on student scores on standardized tests. They include Johnson Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Durham Intermediate, Eubanks Intermediate and Dawson Middle School.

Trustees are now scheduled to meet on Monday, December 11 in the auditorium of Johnson Elementary School. They will not meet on December 4 or December 18 as originally planned. The Board typically meets twice a month, but plans to meet only once in November (Nov. 13) and once in December (Dec. 11).

The Board's next regularly scheduled meeting, however, is Monday, October 30. The meetings usually begin with closed session, followed by the open meeting at 6:30 p.m. Agendas are posted 72 hours in advance on the district's website and on the front door of the Administration Center, 3051 Dove Road in Grapevine.
