District Officials Post Hot Topics Health Fact Sheet

There has been a lot of news lately about staph infections and efforts by public schools to address this issue.

A Virginia student recently died from a drug-resistant MRSA strain of staph. CISD has had 12 confirmed cases of common staph infections at three different school locations, but all the affected locker rooms have been treated: Carroll Middle School, Carroll High School and Carroll Senior High School. CISD's maintenance and custodial department has aggressively managed this response effort. In addition, coaches, athletic trainers and school nurses have worked to better educate students, athletes and parents.

Staph infection is actually quite common, and the best preventative measure is regular hand washing. The district deals with a few cases every year, but staph can grow more serious if not treated. The media coverage has increased concern about this topic in our community and area. In an effort to better communicate with the public about what CISD is doing and how individuals can help prevent the spread of staph, CISD has reinstated the Hot Topics link on the CISD website under Breaking News. A Staph Infection Fact Sheet has been posted there and can be accessed at the link provided below.

If you have any reason to believe your child has a staph infection, contact the principal, coach and/or school nurse at that campus. Also contact your local physician for treatment.

Board Approves $360,000+ In Technology Purchases

Trustees authorized the purchase of more than $360,000 worth of new technology for Carroll classrooms and computer labs during Monday evening's School Board meeting. A total of 288 desktop computers, software packages and 24 mounted presentation projectors will be purchased for a total price tag of $360,378. Funding for this project comes from the District's Maintenance & Operations budget via educational enrichment tax proceeds. Trustees voted last month to dedicate one penny, or an estimated $470,000, of this enrichment tax to address technology needs throughout the District.

The project is expected to be completed by CISD's Technology Department during the months of October and November. Based on an assessment of the District's most immediate technology needs, desktop computers will be installed at Carroll Middle, Dawson Middle, Durham Intermediate, Eubanks Intermediate and Old Union Elementary schools. Every computer lab throughout the District will be equipped with a mounted presentation system. The computers and software packages will be supplied by Dell and the presentation projectors will come from CCS Presentation Systems.

Calendar Change Moves April Student Holiday, Staff Development

Trustees approved an amendment to the 2007-2008 school calendar at Monday's meeting that moves the April student holiday/staff development day to Monday, April 21. This was originally scheduled for the following Monday.

This amendment comes on the heels of recent changes to the Texas Education Agency's testing calendar. Various forms of the TAKS assessment will be administered the week of April 28 - requiring District officials to make a calendar change to avoid testing students on the first day back from a holiday.

This announcement, along with the revised 2007-2008 school calendar will be posted to the District's breaking news and calendar web pages later this week:: www.southlakecarroll.edu/breakingnews.htm and www.southlakecarroll.edu/calendars.htm.

Employee Health Insurance Provider Chosen For 2008 Year

Monday night, Trustees approved a proposal from United Healthcare for employee group health insurance for the 2008 plan year. This decision came on the heels of a proposed renewlal rate from the District's current health insurance carrier that would have increased costs by 26.5%. The District advertised and received proposals from Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Group & Pension Administrators, Humana and United Healthcare.

A District insurance committee formed to review the proposals. The committee, comprised of administrators and campus-level staff members representing all campuses and departments, made the decision to recommend United Healthcare after carefully comparing the submitted insurance proposals. The group researched provider lists, both current and historical pricing, future flexibility, plan benefits/structure, servicing contacts, participant satisfaction and responsiveness.

An employee who selects the highest utilized, employee-only plan will see a 14.9% increase - from a monthly cost of $349.98 to $400.99. The District currently contributes $290 per month for every employee who chooses to take the health insurance.

The insurance plan with United Healthcare will run from January 1 to December 31, 2008. Set up will begin immediately in order to enroll all participating employees prior to winter break.

Lady Dragons Think Pink, Raise Cancer Awareness

Coaches Amelia Trojacek and Kristina Czekaj are pictured above with freshman Lady Dragon volleyball players.

Pink is the new green according to the Lady Dragon volleyball team.

The freshman, junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams have all been diligently raising funds throughout the season to donate to breast cancer research. The players have sought sponsorships from individuals and companies who have been willing to donate funds for every Lady Dragon victory earned this season.

This night will be dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer. Many players have had loved ones affected by the disease. It hit especially close to home this year when freshman coach Amelia Trojacek was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer.

Fans wearing pink at the October 23 volleyball games will receive free admission as well as a special pink rally rag. The JV team plays at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity team at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Dragons will face Keller Central in a district match-up.

EIS Celebrating Red Ribbon Week With Contest, Activities

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated across the country during the week of October 22, and Eubanks Intermediate has exciting activities planned - including a poetry contest. The poetry contest will provide an opportunity for EIS' talented writers to showcase their creativity as part of a week-long anti-drug campaign themed: Fighting The War Against Drugs.

Students will be challenged to take a moment to think of the harmful effects drugs and alcohol can have on people and the community in which they live. They will think of reasons to say no to drugs and alcohol and offer solutions that people can turn to rather than drugs and alcohol. The students will then be asked to write, in poetry form, their thoughts and feelings using the Fighting The War Against Drugs theme. Contest winners' work will be framed and displayed in the front hallway of EIS.

During Red Ribbon Week, EIS will also be:

  • Providing each student and staff member with a drug awareness dog tag necklace;
  • Hosting the One Man Anti-Drug Campaign Assembly presented by Jerry Berkowitz, a throat cancer survivor;
  • Sponsoring a banner contest dedicated to anti-drug slogans and prevention. Winning homerooms will participate in a friendly game of kickball;
  • Providing daily announcements that highlight activities for the day and messages that include startling drug facts and statistics.

EIS students are encouraged to participate by wearing different items throughout the week.

Monday, October 22: Team Up Against Drugs
Wear your favorite team shirt or jersey.

Tuesday, October 23: Dragons ~ Socking it to Drugs
Wear crazy socks!

Wednesday, October 24: Red Out!!

Colleen Klopchic (mom of three Carroll Dragons) and Denise McCrummen (CISD Life Skills teacher at DMS/EIS and mom of three Carroll Dragons) are the veterans on the team as the duo participated in the 2006 3 Day Walk. Other members from Southlake are Shea Lowe (Rockenbaugh Elementary teacher ) and Darla Barnes (mom of two Carroll Dragons).
