Five Carroll Schools Make TBEC Honor Roll

The Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) has announced that five Carroll ISD schools earned recognition on the 2006 TBEC Honor Roll. Johnson Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Eubanks Intermediate, Durham Intermediate and Dawson Middle School were all among 268 public schools across the state that made the Honor Roll.

"Schools get on our Honor Roll the old fashioned way," said Jack Lowe, Chairman of TDIndustries in Dallas and TBEC's Business Co-chair. "They earn it. For us the bottom-line is results. These schools help all students do well in all subjects."

"It's an honor for our school to be included in this group," said DIS Principal Dr. Doug Brubaker. "This recognition reflects the hard work of our students and teachers with the support of our parents."

TBEC identifies the Honor Roll schools by analyzing three years of performance data for all Texas public schools. A school must have a high percentage of students meeting state standards on the TAKS tests in all subjects for three consecutive years, with an emphasis on how many students score at the state's highest standard - commended - on all tests. Selection criteria account also for each school's student demographics, the number of subjects tested and the grades served."

"This year's Honor Roll Schools have achieved performance levels high er than anyone could anticipate when the TAKS testing began four years ago," said Mike McGuire, President of Chemshare Corporation in Port LaVaca, chair of the Honor Roll committee. "The success of these schools demonstrates that setting high standards and raising expectations for all students is an effective tool in raising performance."

"We are extremely proud of the students and staff at these five schools," said Carroll Superintendent Dr. David J. Faltys. "Inclusion on the honor roll is yet another measure of the success of our students and the quality staff we have instructing them."

Representatives from the Honor Roll Schools will gather in Austin on December 4 and 5 for a Sharing Seminar in which "the best learn from the best," followed by a reception and awards dinner.

CMS' Yearbook In the Middle Earns Numerous Accolades

Last year's Carroll Middle School Yearbook staff, which included Dana Faris, Townsend Davies, Glynn Dickens, Laura Spitler, Jacob Williamson, Julianne Plantes and Kalina Kwong, recently received their critiques/awards for their 2005-2006 publication, In the Middle. The staff sponsor is Amy Kaspar.

The National Scholastic Press Association gave the yearbook a First Class honor with three marks of Distinction. Points are awarded by the judge on the liveliness, appeal, personality, imagination and creativity of the publication. Scoring was represented through Marks of Distinction for each of the sections, and CMS received 3 of 5.

Yearbook Yearbook, from Taylor Publishing, chose the CMS publication as a semi-finalist. Of more than 7,500 books that Taylor prints, only 15 percent are nominated as semi-finalists. A panel will select the finalists to be featured in the Yearbook Yearbook publication. If chosen, this would be CMS' fourth nomination/inclusion in this publication.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association gave the Gold Medallist rating to In the Middle. This is the middle school's third year to receive that honor. Of 1,000 possible points, the CMS publication received 976! This scoring is based on concept, design, writing, coverage and photography.

The CMS staff is still waiting to hear award results from the Interscholastic League Press Conference. Each year this small group of students puts a lot into the 112-page book and deserve the recognition for all their outstanding efforts.

Parents Reminded About Online Drug Education Seminar

Just a reminder that for students in grades 7-12 to be able to participate in extra-curricular activities, their parents must participate in a drug education program once during the students' secondary years. Many parents attended one of the seminars at the Senior High School last year or watched the presentation on video to meet the requirement.

The district now offers an online curriculum and survey which is fast and convenient for parents who have not met this requirement. The deadline is October 31.  After that date, students will not be eligible for any UIL activities (i.e. band, sports, choir, drama, etc.) until their parents complete the online survey successfully.

Parents can access the curriculum and survey at http://www.psaas.org

Durham Students Celebrate Geology Week

Geology Week is October 8-14. The students at Durham Elementary are celebrating this observance as geologists, paleontologist, gardners, and speleologists.

Preschool students are learning about the farm and planting a window box herb garden.

Kindergarten students described and sorted rocks by color, size, texture, and shape. They dug in sand pits, sifted sand, and made sand castles learning how water makes sand "stick" together.

First Graders are investigating soil amendments that they will use in their fall vegetable garden. They learned about worms and the work they do in the garden.

Second Graders are researching caves and caverns. They looked for answers to their questions in the book Caves and Caverns by Gail Gibbons. Dale Crawford was a "speleo-fantastic" guest speaker as he shared his knowledge of: How the earth was formed, Volcanic activity, How caves are made, the History and uses of caves and shared a vivid CD on Carlsbad Caverns. The students identified and transferred several caves to their own US map. There are four caves in Texas.

Third Graders are knee-deep into different types of soils. They read about the kinds of soils, how to test minerals, and reviewed the types of rocks when they read The Rocks and Soil Beneath Us by L. Owens. They are investigating several types of soils and how they affect plant growth by starting plants in various soils. Testing minerals was a special experiment as they learned how to identify minerals. They will also make model volcanoes and erupt them at school.

Fourth Graders began their study on fossils by reading Dig Into Fossils. Throughout the book the students learned about the types of fossils and how they are classified. They were able to identify many fossils. Rick Borkowski is our resident expert who guided and worked with the students. The best part was going to the "dig site" and actually digging up fossils!

Garden Club members have prepared the raised vegetable beds for the first graders' fall planting and are sprucing up the wildscape garden. Their first service project will be making scarecrows for Southlake's Slither and Crawl Harvest Trail on Saturday, October 28.
