UIL Realignment Announcement Expected Friday

The University Interscholastic League will announce the 2008-2010 district realignment plan at 9 a.m. on Friday. The information will be distributed to school superintendents at the Regional Education Service Centers. Carroll school officials will post the results of the realignment on the district's website under Breaking News and the Athletics links. Classifications are based on total enrollment in grades 9-12.

Carroll will learn whether or not it will stay in District 5-5A with schools like Colleyville Heritage, Grapevine, Keller Central, Keller, Haltom and Richland or if the Dragons will spend the next two years competing against other 5A schools in North Texas.

A school may be placed in different districts for different activities to alleviate extreme travel situations. A school may only change districts with the unanimous consent of all schools in both districts. If the request is denied, schools may appeal their district assignment to the District Assignment Review Committee.

District Sets Kindergarten Registration Dates

Carroll ISD elementary schools have scheduled kindergarten registration events in an effort to pre-register the Class of 2021. Students who turn five years old on or before September 1, 2008 are eligible to register. Some campuses are offering single registration dates and parents can register their kindergarten students anytime on or after that event. Others ask for parents to register their kindergartner during regular business hours and have planned a student orientation for later in the month.

Carroll ISD will be mailing a postcard to all residential and commercial taxpayers in late February. This postcard will feature Durham Elementary School kindergarten teacher Tiffany Delbridge. It will promote the We Care employee appreciation program, drive interested taxpayers and parents to the district's website for more school information and publicize the kindergarten registration process.

To register your child for kindergarten, you'll need a copy of the child's Social Security number, up-to-date immunization records, birth certificate and two proofs of residency. A driver's license does not constitute proof of residence; rather parents are asked to submit a recently electric AND water bill.

Dates for kindergarten registration are:

  • Old Union Elementary - Wednesday, April 9 from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m.
  • Durham Elementary - Tuesday, April 22 from 6 to 7 p.m.
  • Rockenbaugh Elementary - Thursday, April 24 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Carroll Elementary School - Register during regular office hours April 14-24.
  • Johnson Elementary School - Register during regular office hours April 14-24.

Fundraiser To Benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

The Carroll Senior High Spanish club invites the Carroll Dragon family to join the 3rd annual "Great Strides" walk to cure Cystic Fibrosis. Last year the Carroll Dragon team raised a little over $8,000. This year, the group hopes to beat that total. The 2008 Keller/ Southlake /Grapevine walk will take place at 5 p.m. on March 28 at Bear Creak Park, in Keller. Everyone is welcome!

CF has been termed as the number one genetic killer of children and young adults in the U.S. It is a life-threatening disease that causes mucus to build up and clog some of the organs in the body, particularly in the lungs and pancreas. When mucus clogs the lungs, it can make breathing very difficult. The thick mucus also causes bacteria (or germs) to get stuck in the airways, which causes inflammation (or swelling) and infections that leads to lung damage. Mucus can also block the digestive tract and pancreas. The mucus stops digestive enzymes from getting to the intestines. The body needs these enzymes to break down food, which provides important nutrients to help us grow and stay healthy. People with cystic fibrosis often need to replace these enzymes with capsules they take with their meals and snacks to help digest the food and get the proper nutrition. Approximately 30,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis. An additional ten million more-or about one in every 31 Americans-are carriers of the defective CF gene, but do not have the disease.

Statistics:

  • About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year.
  • More than 70% of patients are diagnosed by age two.
  • More than 40% of the CF patient population is age 18 or older.
  • In 2006, the predicted median age of survival was 37 years.

Please help us help one of our own. Now, more than ever your support is needed. Help us make CF stand for Cure Found!

This year's walker registration form is provided as a link below. Please feel free to download it and begin fund raising for this event. Then join us at Bear Creek Park. Bring friends and family. There will be free drinks and food for the participants.

Facility Committee To Represent Cross-Section of Community

Citizens interested in serving on the School Board's Long-Range Facility Planning Committee can contact the Superintendent's Office to express interest. The district is in the process of seating a citizen's advisory committee made up of a cross-section of community taxpayers, parents and employees. School Board members have charged the committee with assessing long-term facility improvements, additions and construction to address student enrollment and program needs.

Each CISD Trustee is expected to appoint one member of the Facility Committee. Each elementary and intermediate school will submit one parent name and one employee liaison. Each secondary school will submit two parent names and one employee liaison. The Superintendent will decide eight at-large positions on the committee.

Trustees will discuss the appointment process at their February 4 meeting. An organizational meeting of the long-range facility committee is expected by mid-February. School officials say committee participation will take a significant amount of time and effort over the course of the next 8-10 months.

For more information, contact the Superintendent's Office at 817-949-8216.

speaker

The Southlake Chamber of Commerce joins several regional chambers and leadership programs to bring the fourth annual North Texas Leadership Conference on Friday, February 8. Conference attendees will expand their knowledge of community and business leadership, hearing prominent speakers on topics ranging from scenario planning to communication to selecting talent and many more.

Of special interest is renowned speaker and author Dr. Gary McCaleb whose session is titled, “Community Trusteeship:  A Leader’s Blueprint for building community.”  McCaleb is vice president of Abilene Christian University (ACU) and executive director of the Center for Building Community and professor of management at ACU.  His two books, The Gift of Community:  Reflections on the Way We Live and Work Together and Community:  The ‘Other’ Side of Self caused numerous communities to reinvent themselves.

Chamber president Giovanna Phillips said, “I’ve attended this conference for several years and seen the value of it first-hand.  As a result, when the opportunity came to partner in making this conference regional, the Southlake Chamber was excited to become the first chamber in Tarrant County to participate.  Fort Worth also decided to participate, and I’m sure others will soon join, adding to the depth of the North Texas Leadership Conference.”  She continued to say, “We’ll be the host venue for this conference within the next couple of years and look forward to showcasing our community to the region.”

The conference, presented by Capital One Bank, is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Collin County College Spring Creek Campus Conference Center in Plano. Reservations are $85 per person and include conference materials, networking opportunities with businesspeople from surrounding cities, continental breakfast, and lunch.
