TBEC To Honor Six Carroll Schools

Last fall, six Carroll schools were named to Texas Business and Education Coalition's (TBEC) 2006 Honor Roll. Johnson Elementary, Rockenbaugh Elementary, Eubanks Intermediate, Durham Intermediate, Dawson Middle and Carroll High School were among 268 public schools across the state that made the Honor Roll. Representatives from TBEC are visiting each school this week to honor the staff members with a special presentation. Below is a schedule of the assemblies.

Thursday, February 1
Rockenbaugh Elementary: 9 a.m.
Durham Intermediate: 11 a.m.
Eubanks Intermediate: 3 p.m.

Friday, February 2
Carroll High: 1:15 p.m.
Johnson Elementary: 2 p.m.
Dawson Middle: 3 p.m.

TBEC identifies the Honor Roll schools by analyzing three years of performance data for all Texas public schools. A school must have a high percentage of students meeting state standards on the TAKS tests in all subjects for three consecutive years, with an emphasis on how many students score at the state's highest standard - commended - on all tests. Selection criteria account also for each school's student demographics, the number of subjects tested and the grades served.

Hal Wasson Comes Home To Carroll

School Board Trustees named Hal Wasson as the next head football coach of the Carroll Dragons during a special School Board meeting January 29. Wasson replaces Todd Dodge who recently accepted the head coaching position at the University of North Texas. Wasson was chosen for the high-profile position from among 28 applicants by a six-member interview committee. He assumes his role as head coach of a team that has won four of the last five 5A state championships, the mythical national championship and posted a record of 79-1 since 2002.

A former Carroll running backs coach, Wasson has 25 years experience in education, serving as athletic coordinator and head football coach at Fossil Ridge High School in Keller since 2003. His wife, Sallie, teaches physical education at Johnson Elementary. They have two college-age children - Chase, a former all-star quarterback at Carroll, and Chelsie. "Hal knows our program, our kids and our community," said Superintendent David Faltys. "This is a homecoming of sorts for him. We couldn't be more pleased to have a person of his character and knowledge leading the Carroll Dragons."

"I'm very grateful and appreciative of the opportunity and the confidence Carroll ISD has placed in me to come on board and become the head football coach in Southlake Carroll," Wasson said Monday. "To say I am excited about the challenge is an understatement. I'm extremely excited."

Wasson said he is well aware of the program's history from the days when the Dragons were led by Coach Bob Ledbetter to its present-day success under Dodge's direction. As a former Carroll assistant, Wasson's familiarity should help ease the transition to change. "There's no one that appreciates the job Coach Dodge and his staff have done more than me," Wasson added. "I'm very flattered and honored to take on this challenge. But this isn't about me. It's about the Dragons and the program. I'm just feeling very blessed and fortunate to have this opportunity. I'm going to do my best to Protect The Tradition." An All-Conference college standout as a player, Wasson graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He began his teaching and coaching career in Italy, Texas, making stops at San Saba, Pittsburg, Kerens, Mexia and Liberty before coming to Southlake in 2001. He was an assistant under Todd Dodge when the Dragons went 16-0, winning the 2002 5A Division II State Championship. Wasson was named the District 5-5A Coach of the Year at Fossil Ridge in 2005 and led his team to a 10-2 season in 2006, earning the Panthers the District 6-4A Championship.

Hal Wasson, pictured with wife & JES Teacher Sallie, was hired to be the next Dragon Head Football Coach January 29 at a special Board meeting.

Ahoy Mate...Durham Fourth Graders Set Sail

Durham Elementary School fourth graders took to the high seas January 26 during this year's DES Cardboard Boat Regatta at the CISD Aquatics Center! Through scientific inquiry, the students asked tough questions and tested their hypotheses. They made model paper boats and realized their limitations as the cardboard construction began to take shape.

The young boat builders spent weeks preparing and studying their boat designs, considering geometric principles, measuring, folding, taping, painting and decorating. "The students' creativity and dedication to the project was amazing," said DES Boat Regatta Coordinator and Science Teacher Debra Heath.

Walk Benefits Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Don't miss out on this year's Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides Walk Friday, March 23 at Bear Creek Park. Currently, members of CISD's Student Council, Choir, National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Key Club and Leo Club have decided to join the walk. Members of the community are encouraged to join in the walk.

Last year's Dragon team raised nearly $4,000. This year's goal is to surpass the $4,000 mark. Those interested, should contact CSHS teacher Estella Smith at CSHS by E-mail at SmithEs@cisdmail.com or visit www.cff.org/great_strides/estellasmith and click "Join My Team."

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of children and young adults. Currently there is no cure for CF. More than 10 million Americans carry the defective CF gene, but have no sign of symptoms. The median age for survival for a patient with CF is 37.

Join In National "Count For The Record"

Rustin Pavilion at Southlake Town Square will be the “Southlake Command Center “ on Saturday, February 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count. The count is organized by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and will be sponsored locally by the Bob Jones Nature Center. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that creates a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. It provides people of all ages and levels of experience an opportunity to discover the birds in their backyards, neighborhoods or even local parks and “ Count for the Record.” This is the 10th annual GBBC and will be held over the weekend of February 16-19.

Scientists and bird enthusiasts can learn a lot by knowing where the birds are located. No single scientist or team of scientists could hope to document the complex distribution and movements of so many species. They need our help! Let’s make sure the birds from our community are well represented in the count. It doesn't matter whether you report the five species coming to your backyard feeder or the 75 species you see during a day's outing. You simply count the highest number of each species that you see at each outing or sitting and enter your tally at www.birdsource.org/gbbc. You can commit as little as 15 minutes each day for your count. You will be joining thousands of people around the United States and Canada - celebrating nature, birds and the sport of birding.

Bob Jones Nature Center volunteers will be available February 17 at Rustin Pavilion to help answer questions about the count and provide Southlake counting lists and will even have computers available to assist in the input of your data. Nature Center volunteers will also be providing a fun, bird-related craft for children who visit the Command Center.

Last year, Southlake placed ninth in the state for the number of lists submitted. This was an outstanding placement considering the size of the other cities on the list. Texas placed at the top of the list for the number of species reported and the most birds reported among all the states/provinces reporting for 2006. Maybe with everyone’s help, Southlake can move up the list this year! So please join us and learn more about our marvelous feathered friends here in our hometown.

For additional details, E-mail TamaraMcMillan@yahoo.com. For more information about the GBBC, visit www.birdsource.org/gbbc.

Reminder: Black History Committee To Display Exhibits, Host Book Drive

The Black History Cultural Enrichment Committee (BHCEC) is leading an effort to display exhibits at several locations in the area during the month of February. Exhibits will be displayed at area schools and city libraries, as well as Southlake's Bob Jones Nature Center. The exhibits, as well as their annual book drive, will be available to the general public throughout February. Please visit the Southlake library to see the various articles, books, photos and other items showcasing local youth.

In addition, the BHCEC is hosting an annual book drive in conjunction with the Southlake Public Library. This drive benefits local libraries and schools. Throughout February, the BHCEC asks that community members visit the Southlake Library and donate a new book by an African American author. For additional details, please contact Ingrid Ford at 817-424-3184 or Yvonne Gilliam 817-424-2679.

Southlake Carroll Lacrosse: 2007 Season Outlook

Division I Boys Varsity
Head Coach: David Smith (7th season)
Assistant Head Coach: Rich Coccaro (7th season)

With eight returning starters, including two goalies, three first-line middies and three defensemen, Southlake Carroll will be competitive again this season. The defense could dominate games and allow the Dragons to play a controlled style on offense. Southlake Carroll will be led this season by senior All-District defenseman Sam Stevenson, a strong and physical athlete. He'll be joined by senior middie All-District Greg Lehane, who is fast, strong in transition and should dominate on the offensive end this season. Also in the midfield, sophomore Basil Kostaras has a great command of his left and right hands, is a great shooter and is dedicated to the game.

Greg Lehane, a starter since his freshman season, has committed to D-II Bryant College, in Smithfield, RI. Sam Stevenson, also a starter since his freshman season, is being heavily recruited by D-I programs as well as several of the top D-III schools in the country. Stefan Knipp and the Fleps twins are also receiving attention from college coaches. Though only a sophomore, Basil Kostaras has drawn the attention of college coaches already. With a strong showing this season he will be considered a top recruit.

Upcoming game: Saturday, February 10 vs. Austin High School at 1 p.m.

*************************

Division II Boys Varsity
Head Coach: Tim Mullen (1st season SCLA, 6th season overall)
Assistant Head Coach: John Cooley (1st season)

This year's Division II Varsity team represents a healthy mix of older players who will be the leadership of the team and younger players who have benefited from Southlake’s Youth Program. With only three seniors and with nine freshmen or sophomores, this team has a great upside and will continue to get better as the players work through the new offense installed by Coach Mullen. The Southlake DII team will be characterized by great defense, a strong transition and an energetic and motion-filled offense. Goalie play for the DII team will be strong again as the team has two top-notch goalies to guide the team. Southlake Carroll DII should be very competitive in the THSLL North Division and has a chance to win some big games. Should everything work out as expected, the Southlake DII team should compete for the North District Championship and could be good enough to compete for the State title this year.

Southlake Carroll DII will be led this season by junior Team MVP defenseman Charlie Dragan, a quick and fundamentally sound player who can shut down an opposition’s attack. He'll be joined by sophomore defensemen Kris Hall, a veteran of U-15 Team Texas and a great ball handler. Midfield for the DII team will involve a mix of speed (Conner Markus ’08), size (Connor Smith ’10 and Brian Bounds ‘10) and fundamental skill that will result in many scoring opportunities in transition and in a settled offense.

Southlake Carroll DII’s Attack is young but has the first-step speed, size and stick skills necessary to have a big impact on the outcome of our games. Sophomore Trent Luschinger, who played for Team Texas U-15, warrants watching this year, as does converted-middie Kyle Bosworth. Junior Grant Grosgebauer is DII’s primary goalie, and he is perhaps the most fundamentally sound goalie in the Southlake system. Freshmen Ben Dowling did well enough in off-season to warrant a spot on the team and should grow into a top-notch goalie as the season progresses.

Upcoming game: Thursday, February 8 vs. Trinity at 7:30 p.m.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse
Head Coach: Bryan Hantak (3 years as a High School coach in St. Louis and 2 years as Assistant coach at the University of Dallas)
Assistant Coach: Andy Lawler (3rd season with SCLA)

This year's team will be led by a core group of girls returning along with solid goal keeping and defense. In total, there will be 29 players this year: 6 returning seniors and 12 additional high school players; 11 new players (5 having played on the Girls Youth Team). The team plans on player speed and experience from Coach Hantak to boost them on the field. Of special note, former player, Kelsey Ferguson, will be playing Lacrosse at the University of Denver. Senior, Kelsey Lawler, will also be playing in college.

Upcoming game: February 3-4 A&M Tournament in College Station.
