Winter Weather Possible Late Thursday Or Early Friday Morning

A winter storm watch is in effect from late Thursday night through Friday morning. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued the watch. Sleet changing to freezing rain is expected along and west of a line from Sherman, Mesquite, Waco to Temple. A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

Carroll ISD reminds parents, students and employees that it will use the Connect-ED telephone notification system to announce any delays and/or weather-related closings. Information will also be sent to the media. The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. CISD monitors the weather situation carefully and works with other Northeast Tarrant County Schools to make closing or delayed schedule decisions.

Long-Range Facility Committee To Be Seated

At the December 10 School Board meeting Trustees voted to establish a citizen’s advisory committee to review long-term facility needs. The move came following a recommendation by the district’s Budget & Finance Committee in November. That group had recently met with the school’s demographers and with city planners to discuss projected growth within CISD boundaries. Concerned with meeting student enrollment and program needs in the future, Budget & Finance representatives encouraged the Board to commission a citizen’s group to study the issue.

Named the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee, the citizen’s advisory group will be comprised of a cross-section of community taxpayers, parents and school employees. On January 14, Superintendent David J. Faltys submitted the Administration’s recommendation for determining the make-up of the committee. The proposal calls for one parent and one employee liaison to be named for each of the district’s seven K-6 campuses, two parents and one employee liaison from each of the district’s four secondary schools, seven citizens appointed by the Board of Trustees and eight at-large positions appointed by the Superintendent and his Cabinet. The eight at-large positions are proposed to include taxpayers without children attending CISD and representatives from the business community. These positions will also include balanced representation from the two major geographical areas of the district: north of FM 1709 and south of FM 1709.

Dr. Faltys said he hopes to have names submitted to his office before the Board’s February 18 meeting. Trustees may discuss the Long-Range Facility Planning composition at their February 4 meeting. In the meantime, those interested in serving on this committee can contact the Superintendent’s Office at 817-949-8216. Once all of the appointments have been officially made, the group will hold an organizational meeting to discuss their charge and purpose.

Sex, Kids & The Internet Forum Set January 29

Parents of children four years and older will not want to miss a public forum entitled Sex, Kids & The Internet on Tuesday, January 29 at Carroll Senior High School. The forum is being sponsored by SPARKS (Students and Parents Against Risks to our Kids in Southlake) in conjunction with Carroll ISD and Southlake SPIN. Admission to the 7 p.m. event is free of charge.

Flier: S.P.A.R.K.S. Forum - Sex, Kids & The Internet

Designed for parents only, the forum will equip parents with knowledge to help them guide their kids away from internet pornography and online predators.

Topics will include:

  • How pornographers market to kids;
  • How predators seduce children online;
  • How to inspect your PC for porn and software that kids use to get it;
  • Portable porn and game systems;
  • How to set boundaries for children, and keep them on your side;
  • Legal and financial threats to the family due to online behavior;
  • Tools to protect the family and monitor online activities; and
  • What to do if you find involvement with pornography or predators.

The forum will be led by Buddy Knight, a retired Navy Lieutenant turned motivational speaker. Knight, a commander who served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, now runs Knights’ Quest Ministries, an organization dedicated to educating parents on dealing with internet dangers.

“We need to know what our kids are seeing on the internet,” said City of Southlake Council member and SPARKS Chair Laura K. Hill. “And if someone is preying on our children, we need to know how to fight back.”
