In addition, the evening's activities included performances by elementary and intermediate-level students. Each campus chose a Trustee to honor and tied the recognition in with a demonstration of a character quality they've learned from curriculum funded by Mark Guilbert, franchise owner of the Southlake Chick-fil-A. Mr. Guilbert generously provided the funds necessary to implement a district character education program for CISD's K-6 students. The program, entitled Core Essentials, provides lesson plans for counselors to utilize as part of their comprehensive, developmental guidance program. In addition, Mr. Guilbert is also providing incentives, such as coupons, for counselors to use when they see a student demonstrating a character quality that Core Essentials teaches. District officials presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Guilbert Monday evening.

Black History Cultural Enrichment Committee To Display Exhibits, Book Drive The Black History Cultural Enrichment Committee (BHCEC) is leading an effort to display exhibits at several locations in the area. Exhibits will be displayed at area schools and city libraries, as well as Southlake's Bob Jones Nature Center. The exhibits, as well as their annual book drive, will be available to the general public during the month of February. This year’s collaborators include youth from DFW Mid-Cities Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and the Bob Jones Nature Center. Jack and Jill, Inc. is a service organization dedicated to exposing African American children to constructive civic, social, educational and cultural programs. The Bob Jones Nature Center was named after Mr. John Dolford "Bob" Jones, a former slave and one of the first African American family land and business owners in the area with roots in Roanoke, Grapevine and Southlake. Mr. Jones is best known for education, as he started a local school for African American children when access to equal education was denied. He was honored by the City of Southlake by naming public land after him, hence "Bob Jones Park." Beginning the first week in February, please visit the Southlake library to see the various articles, books, photos and other items showcasing local youth and highlighting other aspects of the Jones family's notable past. In addition, the BHCEC is hosting an annual book drive along with the Southlake Public Library. This drive benefits local libraries and schools. Throughout February, the BHCEC asks that community members visit the Southlake Library and donate a new book by an African American author. For additional details, please contact Ingrid Ford at (817) 424-3184 or Yvonne Gilliam (817) 424-2679.
