Board of Trustees Adopt 2008-2009 Calendar

The Carroll School Board adopted the 2008-2009 school calendar as recommended by the District Advisory Committee. School officials say the calendar has been available on the website since November for public review and comment. The web version was approved by the Board, but does not yet show the designated early release days. To view the calendar online , visit the link below

Approved 2008-2009 School Calendar

At Monday’s meeting, Trustees approved an expedited waiver request for six early release days and three staff development days. Once TEA approves the waiver, the days will be added to the calendar and a final version will be printed and distributed to staff, students and parents.

The first day of school is Monday, August 25 and the last day is Friday, June 5. No graduation date has been set at this time. School officials say they plan to have only five early release days at the beginning of the year for elementary campuses. In the past, parents have expressed childcare concerns when the early release days stretched into the second week of school.

Dr. Jan Morgan, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services, said members of the DAC reviewed the input and suggested five days at the beginning of the calendar for math and reading assessments, with the sixth and final early release date reserved for staff development in December or January. Students in grades 5-12 have six early release dates, as well. These are used at the end of each semester, however, for final exams and curriculum alignment.

Major attributes of the 2008-2009 calendar include a five day fall break Nov. 24-28, winter break Dec. 22-Jan. 2, spring break March 16-20, and bad weather days on Monday, April 13 and Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day). Trustees had concerns about using Memorial Day as the second bad weather day, but found no viable alternatives.

Trustees Accept Audit Report

Carroll ISD received a “clean” audit report for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2007. Auditor Charlie Haynes of Haynes & Associates was present at the January 14 School Board meeting to give the financial report. Trustees accepted the audit report and also heard recommendations from citizen members of the Board’s own Audit Committee.

Each year Trustees authorize an independent audit of the district budget as required by law. The audit tests compliance with certain provisions of laws, regulations, contracts and grants, and includes a review of each major fund. Although the audit showed “no findings,” the team provided a number of recommendations to improve internal controls.

The Audit Committee concurred, recommending that the district closely monitor the timeline for spending bond funds and completing bond projects, the process for requiring purchase orders over direct payments and financial operations and procedures at the aquatics center.

Hundreds Of Dragons Think Green For Contest

More than 400 Dragon writers submitted essays to OurGreatCity.com's Thinking Green Essay contest. The contest was open to Carroll students in grades kindergarten through sixth and the essay topic was ideas for making Southlake a "greener" or more environmentally friendly place to live.

Earlier this week, OurGreatCity.com announced the selection of judges for the contest. “Coach” Rick Kolster, owner of Peak Performance Development, along with Leslie Sucur of the Carroll Education Foundation Board and Elena Ellis from Society Life Magazine will have the task of reading the essays and selecting one winner from each elementary and intermediate campus. The winners will be announced the week of January 21 and a special awards dinner will be held in their honor the week of February 2. Each winner will receive a $250 savings bond.

“We are grateful to all of the students who participated in our first essay contest," said Terri Schrobilgen, owner of OurGreatCity.com. "More than 400 students participated in the contest and demonstrated excellent writing skills and genuine concern about taking better care of the environment and community. We plan to work with city leaders to try and implement as many ideas that we can."

OurGreatCity.com is an online business directory and information service providing residents and businesses with a community calendar, updated local news, weather and information about current events, real estate, home improvement services, retail venues, restaurants, entertainment and “spotlights" on local businesses and what they have to offer. There is also a forum for residents to share ideas, opinions or just “sound off” on various topics.

Brush Up On State-Fish Art Contest Rules

Teachers and students planning to enter the Texas State-Fish Art Contest should take time now to review the contest rules and regulations. Entries in the contest must be postmarked by midnight Monday, March 31. Reading the rules by the light of burning midnight oil is not recommended, says Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Zoe Ann Stinchcomb, Texas coordinator for the contest.

"It’s important that entries be prepared in the format specified in the rules,” Stinchcomb said. “For example, artwork must be the proper size and have the entry form glued to the back." The complete set of rules is posted to www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc. Just click on the “State-Fish Art Contest” link in the box on the lower left of the page. Links at the bottom of that page contain everything you need to know to prepare entries and enter the contest.”

Stinchcomb noted that a poster teachers can use to promote the contest to students can be found on the contest page as well. “However, home-schooled students are also eligible to enter the contest,” she said. “In fact, last year first place in the grades 4-6 category went to Stanislav Nedzelskyi of Keller, Texas, a home-schooled sixth grader, and his artwork placed third in his age group nationally.”

Last year the Texas contest attracted 580 entries, and Stinchcomb expects even more this year. Most will arrive in the two weeks prior to the deadline. “Sheer numbers make it vitally important for entries to be prepared correctly,” she said. “It would not be fair for us to fix incorrectly prepared entries even if we had time to do so.”
