Trustees To Consider School Calendar January 14 Due to a state-wide Mid-Winter Administrators' conference in late January, the Carroll School Board will meet only once this month. Trustees are slated to convene at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 14 in the Auditorium of Johnson Elementary School, 1301 N. Carroll Avenue. An executive meeting will be held prior to the public meeting in accordance with Texas law. Trustees typically meet on the first and third Mondays of each month, but are permitted to alter that procedure as their schedules and state law warrants. The Board has a number of agenda items to discuss Monday. They are expected to vote on the proposed 2008-2009 school calendar which was made available for public review and comment on the district's website in November. Trustees will also consider a proposed oil and gas lease and an Administrative recommendation for seating a Long-Range Facility Planning Committee. To see a complete agenda of the January 14 meeting, visit the district's website and click on the Breaking News link. The agenda is typically posted on Friday afternoon prior to the Monday meeting. January Is School Board Recognition Month Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed January as School Board Recognition Month in the State of Texas. Carroll ISD is served by a seven-member Board of Trustees. These men and women are elected at-large by taxpayers for three-year terms. The Trustees give their time and attention to the district without compensation and are often faced with difficult decisions made on behalf of the children, employees and taxpayers of this district. Local citizens are encouraged to participate in efforts to recognize and thank these public servants. The Carroll schools will honor Trustees through campus-based activities throughout the month of January. On Monday, January 14, Superintendent David J. Faltys will recognize the Trustees on behalf of all CISD students and staff. The presentation is slated for 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of Johnson Elementary School.

True To The Core - Nominate Your Favorite Dragon Nominations for the core value of "Excellence" are being accepted in January as part of the district's new True To The Core initiative. This program is a multi-media community awareness campaign designed to increase public understanding and support of the district's core values. This month, all residential and commercial taxpayers will receive a True To The Core postcard in the mail. The postcard explains the program, shares key dates with local taxpayers and directs the public to the district's website for additional information. Key upcoming dates for Texas Public Schools Week and the 2008 Trustee Election are also featured on the postcard. School officials say the True To The Core initiative will utilize all communication methodologies to share the targeted message. This includes publications, electronic newsletters, websites, videos and print advertisements. Carroll ISD is partnering with Southlake Style Magazine to trade in-kind services. Watch for the full-page True To The Core ad in the February edition of the local magazine. The public is encouraged to nominate the CISD school employees who truly represent that month's core value. Nominees will be eligible for a weekly drawing for a $100 gift card provided by the district's We Care sponsors. Watch for the names of the first week's nominees and the lucky gift card winner in next Wednesday's edition of School eNews Online. The nominated employees remain eligible for drawings during that month's core value. Five Dragons Sing Their Way To State Five Dragon singers competed in the Texas All-State Choir competition January 5, and each placed in the prestigious contest. Marie Sanders and Cristina Regalado were named to the All-State choir and Katie Holbert, Preston Lee and Pim van Amerongen were named alternates. These talented choir students have been diligently rehearsing since early last fall, working toward the goal few reach of competing in the state choir competition. Chris Hutchison directs the Carroll Senior High School Choir Department. Band Students Earn All-State Status Twelve Dragon band students made the trip January 5 to Abilene for a chance to be named to the All-State Band. Six students reached this lofty goal, and join Alex Clark, who was named to the All-State jazz band earlier this school year. Several other Dragon band students were named alternates in the competition. These talented musicians have been working on their three etudes since August and have made it through the Region Phase I and II tryouts, and now the Area Tryouts. Thousands of band students from across the state try to achieve this ultimate accomplishment, but only two percent of the students that start these auditions actually advance to the state level. The seven All-State band students will be traveling to San Antonio in February, for the final chair placement and then several days of clinics and the final concerts. Congratulations to the following band members: Ron Behrends directs the Dragon band. Carroll Football Kicker Wins National Competition

The competition, held in Irvine, California, was attended by 125 national finalists who were selected in a competition of hundreds of kickers from across the country. Lopano earned first place in the field goal competition after winning a shoot-out of finalists from 40, 45 and 50 yards out.
