Trustees Approve New High School Schedule

Trustees unanimously approved a new high school schedule during Monday evening's special Board meeting. The schedule will go into effect for the 2007-2008 school year, and was put in place to accommodate new graduation requirements from the State Board of Education that increase the number of math and science credits a student must earn to graduate under the Recommended and Distinguished plans. The new State requirements are known as 4x4.

Carroll students in grades 9-12 currently operate on a modified block schedule that consists of one 50-minute period each day and three alternating 90-minute periods for a total of seven classes per semester. The new schedule is an A/B block that offers freshman and sophomore students a total of eight classes per semester - four, alternating 90-minute periods. Juniors and seniors will take seven of eight 90-minute classes each semester.

The majority of athletics and some fine arts courses will be double-blocked, meaning a student will attend those classes each day. Students who have double-blocked courses will continue to have a choice of seven courses per semester.

The new schedule will cost approximately $525,000 and requires up to 10 additional staff members. The main reason for the change is to provide flexibility for students who participate in extracurricular activities, while still fulfilling necessary graduation requirements. Eighty-four percent of Carroll students participate in an extra-curricular activity.

CSHS Musical The Pajama Game Opens January 26

Roxann Taylor & Associates, Realtors is proud to present the Carroll Theatre Department's musical, The Pajama Game. This entertaining show runs January 26-27 at 7:30 p.m., January 28 at 3 p.m. and January 29-31 at 7 p.m. All performances take place in the Carroll Senior High School auditorium, 1501 W. Southlake Boulevard.

General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and children. Tickets are available at Roxann Taylor & Associates, Realtors and Fit 4 Her in Southlake. This production is also sponsored, in part, by Texas Toyota and Basa Resources, Inc.

The Pajama Game synopsis: Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful, as sparks fly between new superintendent Sid Sorokin and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 1/2 cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well. Bright and brassy, this unconventional, fast-paced Broadway favorite is brimming with songs and dances which have become popular and musical theatre standards, and features plenty of splashy, fun production numbers. For solid, classical musical comedy, it's hard to beat The Pajama Game.

Sophomore Debater Competes In California Tournament

Sophomore Dragon Forensic member Danielle Smogard recently participated in the Victory Briefs Debate Tournament in Santa Monica, California. Smogard competed against 140 of the nation's top debaters. After six preliminary rounds of competition, Danielle was seeded 21st and advanced to the elimination rounds and lost on a 2-1 decision. This was quite an impressive fete for a sophomore competitor.

Smogard was invited to participate in a round robin of the top 24 sophomore debaters in the nation and finished second. The round robin was held the day before the tournament began. Much of Smogard's success can be attributed to the assistant coaching responsibilities of Eric Melin. Diane Forbes is the head coach for the Dragon Forensic Team.
