Sports Illustrated has ranked Carroll ISD as having the number one athletic program in Texas. The magazine announced its picks for the best high schools in each of the country's 50 states and D.C. last month.

The results were based on SI's research of state tournament championships from the 2006-2007 school year along with the examination of all-around success rates as well as each school's ability to produce star athletes and teams that excelled at the national level.

Long-Time Carroll Dragon Named District Director Of Maintenance

Chauncey Willingham

Chauncey Willingham can add another title to his resume at Carroll. After all, he has more than 30 years of history with the local school district. On Monday, School Board Trustees approved Willingham as the district’s new Director of Maintenance.

“Chauncey knows our district as well as anyone and has done a great job serving as the interim Director of Maintenance,” said Superintendent David Faltys. “He relates well to employees and his history here in Carroll will help ensure a smooth transition in the maintenance and upkeep of our facilities. The maintenance department plays a very important role in ensuring a positive, safe learning environment for our students.”

Willingham most recently served as an assistant principal at Carroll Senior High School, but has held the titles of teacher, coach, and principal for CISD in the past. He began his career as a Dragon in 1975. A graduate of North Texas State University in Denton, Willingham earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Masters degree in Public School Administration.

Education is a family trade for the Willinghams. Wife, Patty, and son, Justin, are both teachers at Carroll Elementary School, and daughter, Katie, teaches in nearby Birdville ISD. The Willinghams reside in Southlake.

Willingham replaces former Director of Maintenance Todd Thompson who resigned recently to pursue other career endeavors.

Construction Zone Offers Project Updates

Construction projects at Durham Elementary and Intermediate Schools and Carroll High School are well underway despite inclement weather that has hampered efforts to begin roof work. All of the projects are part of the February 2006 bond election approved by voters.

Report: July 2007 Construction Zone

At Carroll High School demolition is ongoing to expand the campus' library and band hall. In addition, the stage area in the cafeteria is being transformed into a food court for ninth and tenth graders. The campus will receive a 10-classroom addition on the southeast of the campus, as well as a new commons area for the 1,300+ students to gather.

Work to install chilled water units at Durham is ongoing. About 20 of the air handlers have been installed in classrooms, with a total of 83 expected by project end. This includes new duct work and a four-pipe system to transport cold and hot water. The new HVAC system is part of a major renovation at Durham that will include a new roof and site work to improve a long-standing drainage problem.

Trustees Approve Two Year, $35,000 Marketing Deal With Car Dealership

School Board members approved a two-year marketing contract with Sewell Automotive Companies at Monday night's meeting.

The District's partnership with Sewell first began in 2005. The new agreement will extend the dealership's exclusivity at Dragon Stadium through June 2009. Other deal points include signage at District facilities, bus advertisements, light pole banners at Carroll Senior High School, platinum-level sponsorship in CISD's We Care program as well as kiosks and announcements at regular season football games. Sewell's agreement does not preclude other companies in the automotive sales category from advertising in facilities other than Dragon Stadium.

The agreement results in $20,000 during 2007-2008 and $15,000 during 2008-2009 for a total of $35,000 in revenue for the District's general operating fund.

City's Fire, Police Will Temporarily Relocate To Former Intermediate School

Trustees approved an interlocal agreement at Monday's School Board meeting with the City of Southlake authorizing the fire and police departments to temporarily use portions of the former Carroll Intermediate School building. The relocation is estimated to last two years while the City constructs a new facility on Carroll Avenue to centrally locate its fire and police departments.

The City will incur the cost of utilities and provide custodial services for the portion of the building being used. The District will maintain the mechanical, electrical and plumbing operations. CISD's Child Nutrition Department and diagnosticians will continue to office out of the CIS building.

The 2007 varsity Dragon cheerleaders recently traveled to Texas A&M University's UCA camp to demonstrate the effects of hard work and discipline. The team was awarded all blue superior ribbons during evaluations, received a spirit stick each night of camp and also earned the "Top Banana" spirit award on the second day.

Kirsten Stone won the UCA "Jump Off" award for the week. In addition, the following four team members were named 2007 UCA All-Stars: Lexi Engeldinger, Jeniel Jacobson, Kendall Jenkins and Jessica Simmons. The final day of camp solidified Carroll’s eagerness to compete and win; the team received a Gold Superior ribbon during final evaluations and won Camp Champs in the Cheer division. The Varsity team also brought home the Leadership Award —an honor where all squads at camp nominate the team that they feel has most demonstrated a positive example of unity and success.

As the beginning of a new school year approaches, the varsity cheerleaders will continue summer workouts to prepare for a winning 2007-2008 school year. The varsity squad is coached by Heather Robinson.
