Art

Mrs. Kathy Leftwich is in her tenth year of teaching in Carroll ISD, and her twenty sixth year in education. Mrs. Leftwich was born in New Jersey, but spent most of her youth in Southern Louisiana on her family’s sugar cane plantation. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in art education at Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. Her first teaching experience was at the high school level. During these summers Mrs. Leftwich was the director of a day camp. After three years she returned to college and earned her masters degree in Guidance and Counseling Psychology. During this time she held a graduate assistantship and was a programs director and counselor in the college dormitories. While in graduate school she worked as an art teacher at a local high school.  Kathy then worked as a high school guidance counselor for six years. In the years that followed Mrs. Leftwich stayed at home until her two daughters were school age. After a transfer to Charlotte, North Carolina she worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg school district for four years in at a junior high teaching fine art and crafts. After another transfer Mrs. Leftwich and her family moved to Southlake Texas. Kathy substituted for two years and then began teaching art at Carroll Intermediate. Six years later she returned to the high school setting where she taught Art I, Art II, Ceramics, Art II Sculpture and Art II Painting. Next she moved to Durham and Rockenbaugh.  This will be her second year as the full time art teacher art Rockenbaugh.   Mrs. Leftwich is a potter and has a ceramics studio at her home. In her free time she enjoys art, gardening, horse back riding, cooking, and spending time with her family and pets. Art at RES incorporates a hands on studio environment. All students in grades K-4 are encouraged to express themselves through art and to achieve their personal best. The art curriculum interweaves art production, history, critique, and appreciation. Students explore a variety of materials including tempera, watercolor, clay, pastels, crayons, markers, paper, mixed media, and fiber. The art curriculum makes connections to math, (geometry and measurement) science, (plants, animals, and environment), language arts, and social studies. Some of the many topics covered in art are drawing, painting, water color, landscape, still life, sculpture, portrait, abstract design, printmaking, and perspective. Student art work is prominently displayed throughout the school for all to enjoy.  My goal is for students to have a meaningful art experiences and foster a lifelong appreciation of art.
